This document discusses the International Rice Research Institute's (IRRI) adoption of Creative Commons licensing to more widely disseminate its rice knowledge and technologies. It provides background on IRRI's mission and previous copyright policy of reserving all rights. IRRI now releases most information products under Creative Commons licenses, allowing copying, distribution, and derivative works with attribution. This has facilitated open access to IRRI publications, photographs, and other media online. While providing benefits, Creative Commons also presents some challenges in balancing open access with commercial interests that require contractual solutions.
The document discusses projects undertaken by an organization to improve communication and processes. It overhauled its phone system and customer service structure to address inefficient communication. It also developed new web forms for its supply chain to provide easy access for end users, standardized data tracking, and identification of issues with open invoices. The projects were implemented successfully with positive feedback and planned deployment of the new systems.
Metadata refers to hidden data within electronically stored information that can include details like author name, edit history and more. While metadata can be beneficial for authentication and collaboration, it also poses risks if it reveals weaknesses in a legal case or was inappropriately modified. Though metadata cannot be fully avoided, its creation can be minimized and removal methods exist, but are not always fully reliable. Lawyers should be aware of metadata issues and implement policies and training to safely manage electronically stored information.

Intellectual property refers to original creations such as inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names and images used in commerce that are protected by law from unauthorized use by others. There are two main categories of intellectual property: industrial property, which includes inventions, trademarks and industrial designs; and copyright, which includes literary and artistic works such as novels, poems, plays, films, musical works, artistic works such as drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures, and architectural designs. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a United Nations agency that oversees international intellectual property laws and treaties.
- Digital technology has significantly impacted the film industry through changes in production, distribution, and audience consumption. At the production stage, films are now often created digitally rather than on physical film. Digital distribution has lowered costs but increased piracy risks. Audiences now have more options for accessing films through digital downloads, streaming, and video on demand platforms. Overall, digitalization has disrupted traditional models but also created new opportunities for both large studios and independent films.

This document summarizes the results of a study that tested lead levels in decorative paints from nine countries. Most industrialized countries have banned lead in decorative paints due to the health risks of lead exposure, especially for children. However, studies in recent years found that many paints sold in developing countries still contain high levels of lead. This report presents the findings from tests of paint samples collected in nine countries by IPEN participating organizations. It also provides background on the health effects of lead exposure and the international efforts through the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint to phase out the use of lead in paint.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

15. Scientific Books
Since 1962, IRRI has
produced scientific books
in the form monographs,
proceedings, field guides,
and manuals.
These books are distributed
to our partners in developing
countries through their
institutional libraries.
Some are published solely
by IRRI; others are co-
published with reputable
science publishers, such as
World Scientific Press,
Elsevier, Wiley, CABI, and
others.
18. Photographs
In its own photo bank
and on flickr, IRRI has
thousands of images
depicting landscapes,
farmers, children, events,
markets, research, and
life in general—in Asia
and elsewhere—all
available free via creative
commons license.

24. Delivering rice knowledge for impact
Goal 4: Bridging the
knowledge gap in
rice research
To provide equitable access to information
and knowledge on rice and help develop the
next generation of rice scientists
26. Good News!
• Copublication with like-minded institutions,
such as the International Plant Nutrition
Institute (IPNI).
• IRRI photos in Institute Photo Bank and
flickr ~ 4,500 images; downloadable and free.
• IRRI books on Google Book Search (one
of the few publishers to allow full-text
viewing and perhaps the very first to provide
download access to the entire publication).
27.
28. More Good News!
• IRRI has agreed to support the Vibal Foundation’s online project
www.Filipiniana.net (a non-commercial online digital library and
repository dedicated to Philippines).
• The Philippine Agricultural Studies subsite located here will be a
comprehensive repository of information related to Philippine rice
production and Filipino rice farmers.
• Initial content will be provided by IRRI, which will give access to
the IRRI publication collection, a scientific resource directory,
online research materials, and other related information.
• IRRI will also assist in engaging other research agencies and
organizations to obtain information about agricultural research.
29. Impact
Anyone may now obtain, repurpose,
distribute, and even modify content
(self-service publishing) of IRRI
publications and photos with proper
attribution using Creative Commons
licenses.
30. Challenges Encountered
• CC publishers are still few and far-
between and not yet too well-known.
• Peer-reviewed and other recognized
publishers often request exclusive
publication rights and sometimes still
require assignment of copyright.
31. Apparent Conflicts over CC

review on a case-by-case basis
23 January 2009
Hello Gene,
Thanks for speaking with me yesterday. Again, we'd love to use some of your photos within our instructional video
courses on quot;Ricequot;.
Here is our online cooking school: http://rouxbe.com/school and here is a sample
lesson: http://rouxbe.com/school/sections/81/objectives. We have shot two whole lessons on rice already but are
looking to show a few images of the rice harvest.
This is for commercial use but we will only use a few images in a long video course. We'd be happy to provide your
consumers with access to this video content. You could even embed some of the video on your site if you'd like. I hope
that this meets with your approval. I will let you know tomorrow if we need higher resolution for the photos along with a
list of photos we'd like to use in our lessons.
Best Regards, Joe Girard CEO
