Peter Calthorpe is an architect, urban designer, and urban planner based in San Francisco. He is a founding member of the Congress for New Urbanism, which promotes sustainable building practices. Calthorpe was born in London and raised in Palo Alto, and has taught at several universities including UC Berkeley. In 1989, he proposed the concept of a "Pedestrian Pocket," a transit-linked, mixed-use urban area with parks at its center, as an alternative to low-density suburban developments. Calthorpe Associates, which he founded, promotes planning for mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented communities that integrate housing, transportation, and commercial activity in an environmentally sustainable way.
