The Peshtigo fire occurred on the same day as the famous Chicago Fire in 1871. The weather was limiting accurate weather information. The fire destroyed the town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, killing nearly 1,500 people as fires burned numerous areas that day. Eyewitnesses fled the fires by running for the river through the burning town and sugar bushes, with victims perishing in the panic and flames.
