Consumerism Woodhouse Summary
In consumerism Woodhouse starts off by telling his audience what consumerism is. Woodhouse
also talks about the benefits of it such as stimulating the economy and facilitating peoples liberties
to shape their identities and cultures . This is followed by the downside of consumerism that it is a
manipulated and environmentally destructive habit leading to too many units of stuff being
designed, produced, advertised, sold, and discarded . This brief introduction really helps lay the
foundation for the rest of the article and foreshadows what will be talked about.
Woodhouse then goes into the agents . The agents are the ones that are actually responsible for
producing consumerism. These are the chemists that created harmful synthetic pesticide, product
designers that create new and attractive products, and civil engineers that build roads that create
urban sprawl as just a few examples. Without this group of people there would be no production of a

The means is just the technological advancement of today s world. Woodhouse uses examples of
means such as research, marketing, and technology in general. This is a crucial point in
consumerism because without the means then the agents wouldn t have the capability to mass
produce items. This nonhuman technology also gives agents a certain level of calculability, and
predictably, unprecedented to others.
Woodhouse also explains that without sites then businesses and governments wouldn t have
anywhere to test their ideas or develop new ideas. Fast food restaurants, military research and
development, and college universities are all places of research. College universities are a good
example because they get government grant money to test new theories and technologies. If
anything should prove successful during research though it is almost guaranteed that it will be
mass produced and used to help stimulate the economy creating tax

Chimpanzees Exhibit Culture Through Social Interaction
The concept of culture to many individuals may be perceived as a combination of language,
beliefs, norms, values and customs shared amongst individuals; passed along generations to be
carried out within a society. In a society, individuals make up social groupings that form ideas,
behaviors and materials objects that encompass what they define as culture. Culture is not only
essential for survival, but for growth and communication; through interaction, observation and
imitation our behavioral patterns thus create culture. Since culture is such a tool kit for survival, it
does not come as a surprise that culture is apparent in animals. Animal culture refers to the theory of
social interaction, through means of learning, artifacts, behavior patterns, animals such as
chimpanzees, pass their knowledge through generations, much like humans do. Throughout this
paper I will begin to identify that similar to humans, chimpanzees exhibit culture. By looking at
norms, behaviors, attitudes, and comparing to those of human characteristics, I will prove
chimpanzees learn culture through social interaction.
Culture has a strong influence on a variety of aspects in our lives; many may know it to be an
aspect uniquely acquired by humans. The debate drives onto scrutinize if apes, such as
chimpanzees are influenced by culture and its impact on chimpanzee social groups. The concept of
social learning has become such a popular source in distinguishing if animals, do in fact exhibit
culture.

The Consequences Of The Cuban Revolution
The Cuban Revolution was a necessary act that attempted to improve the lives of the cuban
population through many horrific events. The Cuban Revolution, which began in the early 1950 s,
was an overthrow of a corrupt government. Throughout Fidel Castro s multiple attempts to improve
the horrific conditions of the Cuban population, the Revolution became a long and tragic journey
beginning with the 26th of July Movement, to The Bay of Pigs invasion, to The Cuban Missile
Crisis.
In 1940 to 1944, communist Fulgencio Batista withheld power as the president of Cuba and then
from 1952 to 1959, United States backed dictator until fleeing Cuba because of Fidel Castro s 26th
of July Movement. Socialist Fidel Castro governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from
1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008. Fidel Castro s intent was to provide Cuba
with an honest democratic government by diminishing the corrupt way in which the country was
run, the large role the United States played in the running of Cuba as well as the poor treatment the
living conditions of the lower class. On July 26th, 1953, Fidel Castro led one hundred and twenty
nine men and two women in a daring assault against the Moncada army Barracks in Santiago de
Cuba to overthrow the government of Fulgencio Batista. Fidel Castro s plan to overthrow the
government of Fulgencio Batista resulted in eight deaths, twelve wounded and more than sixty
Cubans were taken prisoner to be tortured and then executed.

Food Safety Is Extremely Severe Worldwide
Food Safety in China
Food safety tends to be a hot topic in Food safety these years. Though the meaning is similar,
different from food security, food safety concentrates more on health aspects rather than
sufficiency. So what is food safety? Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling,
preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent foodborne illness. (AmercianPeanutCouncil,
2014) This prevents civils from severe health hazards and in this way is the food safety similar to
the definition of food defense.
I collected data from different websites and summarized them in a chart. Here is the
performance of countries based on their 2015 food safety score. (Charlebois, 2014) Based on
this chart, China ranks 42 in the whole world. It s clear that the situation of China s food safety
is extremely severe worldwide. The cause of the food safety problem is intricate; however, before
I explain the complex cause of food safety in China, I d like to illustrate the phenomenon of China
s food safety problem which will definitely promote the comprehensibility of the causes of food
safety problems.
People from different fields hold different views upon food safety phenomenon. One of the
directors of Asia Institute Yan stated that Food safety problems constituted a new, urgent, and
multifaceted challenge to Chinese people, society, and the state, involving a number of social,
political, and Beck s theory of risk society. (2012) Food safety problems affect Chinese

Manic Depression Research Paper
Manic Depression, or more commonly known as Bipolar disorder, is a disorder that causes the
patient affected to cycle through periods of depression and mania (NIMH n.d.). There are three
general types of Bipolar Disorder and then a fourth category for those who do not fall within any
of the previous categories. Bipolar I Disorder is defined by manic episodes that last at least 7
days and then a depressive episode lasting at least two weeks. Symptoms may be severe enough
to seek immediate medical care. Bipolar II Disorder is defined by recurring depressive, and
hypomanic episodes, but not to the extent of Bipolar I. Cyclothymic Disorder is defined by
numerous periods of hypomania and depression that lasts longer than two years in adults, (for...

Typical treatments for bipolar disorder include: psychotherapy, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics,
and some Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (NIMH n.d.). In some cases, doctors will
prescribe a medication to combat the depression, a medication to combat the mania, and then
medication to combat any side effects caused by the other medications. Patients who exhibit a
higher rate of serotonin 5 HT binding prior to starting medication had a higher chance of recurring
episodes, even while taking medication, than did those who had a lower rate of serotonin 5 HT
binding prior to medication (Parsey 2013). Lithium was a drug that works within the nervous
system to strengthen the neural connections between cells to increase cell signaling therefore
limiting the frequency and intensity of manic depressive episodes. Lithium was anticipated to have
success rates as high as 70% 80% but studies now indicate that Lithium really has a success rate of
approximately 40% and comes with a plethora of side effects (Surgeon General Report for Mental
Health). Modafinil is an alpha adrenergic agonist and directly stimulated the receptors within the

Safety Net Hospitals And The United States Health Care System
Safety net hospitals have played an important role in the United States health care system. They
provide a significant amount of care to low income, uninsured, and vulnerable populations. While
treating these types of populations, they are still able to provide high cost services such as trauma
and burn care. They often take on additional roles and responsibilities such as the training of
medical and nursing students (Coughlin et al., 2014). These hospitalsystems are well known for
their open door policy (Wynn et al., 2002). They will examine and treat all individuals, whether
or not they can pay for any of their services. The hospitals are not distinguished from other
providers by ownership. Some are publicly owned and operated by local or state governments,
while others are non profit. However, they are distinguished by their commitment to provide access
to care for all individuals with limited or no access to health care due to their finical circumstances,
insurance status or health condition (What is a Safety Net Hospital, 2015).
Due to safety net hospitals urban locations, they tend to treat more uninsured patients who will
frequently show up in the emergency room. Even if their care is not critical or an emergency, these
patients cannot be turned away. A study performed by an urban institute estimated that the costs of
uncompensated care to these hospitals were as high as forty five billion dollars in 2013.
Government programs will help with approximately 65% of

Essay about The Affects of the Attributes of Parks on Real...
Introduction
Initially the question of the affects of parks and their various attributes on real estate value may
seem an absurd question for an Economic Developer to think about. However, the value of real
estate is of prime importance to the community and the Economic Developer due to the nature of
land as an appreciating commodity. Therefore it is necessary that we study the possibility that real
estate and land values could be modified by the a park. By understanding the consequences of
these uses of land can be an effective strategy for passive Economic Development. Rather than
making direct improvements to each parcel we change land uses near real estate clusters to change
the values of many properties at once. In order to better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Public spaces that lack any form of green space are also not considered in this study, these are
places like Fountain Square in Cincinnati that have little residential land use surrounding it. Non
residential real estate demands were ignored in researching this issue because it was assumed
that only residential real estate buyers demand proximity to a location attribute like a park
space. Non residential entities should primarily be focused on factors such as infrastructure,
spatial needs and accessibility as opposed to more aesthetic or resident serving attributes. Park
shape, function, size and service area are also discussed. Park shape has to do with the geometry
of the park relative to land uses surrounding it. Park function will always be associated with the
types of activities that can take place in the park. These activities can include passive
characteristics and active characteristics. Passive characteristics are non intensive properties such
as the presence of benches, good landscaping or other decorative elements such as ponds, gardens
and artistic pieces. Active characteristics refer to things that people use such as playgrounds,
fields of play for various sports, pools and pavilions or other activity hosting structures.
Accessibility will also be discussed in terms of the number of people that will be able to utilize a
certain characteristic of the park.

Punishment In Night By Elie Wiesel
Throughout the history of mankind, many genocides have occurred around the world because
there is much hatred among specific kinds of people. A genocide is the deliberate killing of a
large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. An example of a
genocide in Germany is the Holocaustwhere Elie Wiesel, the author of Night, showed the Jews
experience from the horrors, tortures, and killings in the death camps. At the same time, a mass
execution was happening in Nanjing, China, where the Japanese soldiers were slaughtering and
torturing thousands of the Chinese. Both the Jews from Night and the Chinese in the Nanking

The Jews and Chinese suffered beatings from their oppressors while they were trying to recover
from their recent injuries. In the memoir, Night, Idek, a German Kapo, conducted the Jews
viciously, making almost any injuries very difficult to recover from. For example, Idek was
viciously beating Elie when they crossed paths. Idek lost his temper and caused himself to jump
on Elie. Idek violently beat Elie continuously until Elie was covered in blood. Even though Elie
tried not to howl in pain in the way of accepting his false, Idek mistook him and beat Elise harder
and harder (Wiesel 53). This was an example of cruelty because Elie was being beaten for just
being in Idek s path while Idek was venting his anger. Idek s actions showed cruelty because he
attacked Elie without stopping to let Elie recover even though, Elie was nearly dying from the
beating. Another example of beatings, was that in the Nanjing database of war, Alan Axelrod s The
Rape of Nanjing, the war crime database stated that Atrocities reported and (in many cases)
documented include a rampage through the Nanking Hospital, during which soldiers tore bandages
from the flesh of the wounded, smashed casts with clubs, and raped nurses (Axelrod). These actions
showed cruelty to the Chinese because the Chinese were being beaten from the brutality of the
Japanese, even though the Chinese were already suffering from their

Analysis Of Toni Morrison s The
Perception is everything. People never know what is going on with the other race or side. In
Toni Morrison s Recitatif she brings up racism and the societal normal. She never reveals race of
either of the girls in this story. Never knowing the race of the girls other than they are two different
races so how one racenever knows that the other is thinking about or where they are coming from.
In this story two girls meet and become friends and go separate directions. They continue to meet
throughout their lives and try to rekindle the childhood friendship as adults. In this story two girls
from very different back grounds and different races become fast friends. This shows how children
do not know the differences or the color lines that society has put into place. As children gender,
race, and religion is never an issue. Racismis something that society has created. Society has
made racism one of the main barriers throughout the world. In the story the two girls are friends
and live in a group home. The girls were witnesses to some bad things carried out by the older girls
in the home. They end up separating and going different ways in life. When they meet up later
while rekindling their relationship begin to reminisce about their childhood. They come to find out
that their perception and memories do not exactly match up. The way things are perceived can

Ancient Egyptian art is five thousand years old. It emerged and took shape in the ancient Egypt, the
civilization of the Nile Valley. Ancient Egyptian art was shown with emotion beautifully in painting
and sculpture, and was both highly symbolic and stylized. The exceptional traditions in Egypt is one
of the most important things in the history of art. The tombs and temples of the Egyptians have
expressed the grandeur of the kingdom of the Nile. Egyptian sculptors and painters began to
formulate patterns to represent figures and stories. Egyptians used the art to represent a
continuation of life after death, it was an important part of their culture. They believed that, in
order for the spirit to live on, the dead person s body had to be preserved, or mummified, and

A Single Day Exploration Of The Cambodian Angkor Temples...
I thought I would do a single day exploration of the Cambodian Angkor temples, thinking it was
just one or two piles of rocks I d be looking at, but I needed a three day pass to see all of them and
I still don t think I spent enough time. The sun was beating down hard and climbing the insanely
steep stairs of each temple was exhausting with the heavy cameraequipment bag stuck to my sweat
soaked back. There is one hundred or so temples that were built between the ninth and fourteenth
centuries and left for the jungle to swallow and for people to pilfer. Some of the temples have
massive trees that have grown around and through the stone and now support some of the
structures. It s fascinating to see the thick web of roots cascading down over the walls of the
carved stones. Piles of rubble that used to be roofs lay everywhere and make me think, should I
be walking under that unstable looking stone roof that hasn t collapsed yet? Some of the stone
walls are leaning so far over that walking beside them is frightening. The movie Tomb Raider
was filmed in one of the temples, a guide that works there told me, just before he asked for
fifteen dollars for twenty minutes of showing me the best spots to take my pictures. After each
drive to the next set of temples, I would climb out of the car and was greeted by numerous
vendors, all coveting the valuable American notes I was hiding in my pockets. You need cold

The Doctrine Of Christian Universalism
The Doctrine of Christian Universalism
Archie J. Spencer, Th.D
THS 540: Introduction to Christian Theology
Shahrzad Jamali
ACTS Seminaries
Fall 2017
Universalism is perhaps the greatest unspoken premise of modern thought within the Christian
church.
N.T wright The salvation of humankind has been always presented in 3 possible positions: 1)
none will be saved, 2) some will be saved, or 3) all will be saved. The traditional Christian
teaching has been always focused on the second position and maintained that only some of people
will be saved. But there have been ongoing debates within this position about who exactly will be
the saved group? And what will be the condition of the lost ones?
Christian Universalism is a school of Christian theology that is focused on the doctrine of universal
salvation. This doctrine holds the third position and believes that eventually all human beings,
regardless of their faith, will be saved and will enjoy everlasting life with Christ. This doctrine has
been presented differently by those who advocated it throughout the centuries and various labels
have been used to refer to this doctrine, including Universal restoration , universal restitution ,
universal reconciliation , and universal salvation. Universalism is also closely related with other
complicated theological issues, such as the relationship between God s nature, his love and His
justice, free will and predestination, and the retributive punishment. Therefore, it

Terrorism Impact On Terrorism
1. Introduction
Twelve years have passed since four coordinated terrorist bomb attacks occurred in central London
on the 7th of July in 2005, conducted by four suicide bombers. Three of the attacks took place in
London Underground trains, on the Circle line near Aldgate, on the Piccadilly line near Russel
Square and at Edgware Road. The fourth bomb attack happened on a double decker bus in Tavistock
Square. The attacks happened during busy rush hour and the was one hour between the three
London Underground train attacks and the attack on the bus. Fifty two people were killed and
more than 700 were injured in the attacks, the bomb attack being the worst terror attack in the UK
since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. This terrorist attack affected people severely physically, but
most of all, emotionally. The results of a telephone survey done within the general population of
London after the July 7th bombings, show that 55% of 1,010 participants felt their life was in
danger from terrorism and 86% of the participants thought that another attack on London was likely
in the near future (Greenberg, Rubin, Wessely, 2005).
In the past decade, there have been an increased amount of terrorist attacks in Europe, such as
terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2016 and in Manchester Arena in May 2017. Whenever a
terrorist attack happens in Europe, it is widely reported on various media outlets and the extensive

The transition through the chapters like graduating from college to becoming mayor was
something astounding to me because he was only seventeen when he graduated and about
decade later he becomes mayor of New York City. Evan Cornog captured the dedication of what
Dewitt Clinton portrayed, like the help to make New York City and New York one of the
biggest thriving economies of the 19th century. The book captured the parts of Dewitt Clinton s
life by displaying the political hardships he faced when confronting people like Aaron Burr who
didn t like his stance on the Twelfth Amendment and Thomas Jefferson hesitation on the
constructing of the Erie Canal. Evan Cornog also explains in the book that most of the
information he gathered from Dewitt Clinton are mostly from the public point of view of him,
and he also states that most of the written journal s he examined were very brief. I felt that the
perspective that Evan Cornog had on Dewitt Clinton was the way people talked about him. Like
the time his college professor praised him after he died, and one of his uncle s who was a doctor
told him not to study too hard because it would make him sick that was the dedication he set for
himself. This biography of Dewitt Clinton gave a deeper insight on his plans for the Erie Canal

Attachment Theory And Its Impact On Our Lives
New born babies are the future of mankind and how we treat them has a great impact on our

the baby s livelihood. The attachment theoryshould continue to be researched because there is still

Gregor Johann Mendel was a scientist and botanist born on July 22, 1822. At birth he was given

years, young Mendel showed signs of being very intelligent. One of his teachers recommended he

No one really understood the genetic principles of these plants and animals so the experiments
were sometimes dangerous and costly. In the 1890 s better microscopes were introduced into the
scientific world and allowed scientist to further their study and knowledge in cell division. This
was a key component in the study of genetics. Mendel is commonly known at the father of modern
genetics . While being a teacher Mendel had time to have experiments of his own. Most of his time
was spent on the testing of pea plants. He tried to use regular garden pea plants because they were
easily accessible, grown in large numbers in the monastery gardens, and they were extremely easy
to reproduce while not having to wait a long period of time before receiving results. Common pea
plants have both male and female reproductive organs which gives them the ability to either self
pollinate or cross pollinate.
The experiments were to study their genetic makeup and test them over generations and
generations of other pea plants. He would study a parent plants and when their offspring

The Food Product Of Raw Milk
Introduction Bacteria can be more commonly transmitted through the intake of a food product.
Due to high possibilities in transmission and contamination biologist test food product routinely.
Through the use heterotrophic plate count the number of bacteria present within the food sample
can be determined. This number can indicate whether or not the food is highly harmful and how
fast food product will spoil. If the food product like meat contains over 106 bacteria per gram it
can case disease. Biologist indicate that the most common food born bacteria present are
Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria, Clostridium, Vibro, and S. aureus. The bacteria counted
will only be the ones capable of growing in environmental conditions provided. For this
experiment the food product Bison will be used and diluted and plates will be counted for each
dilution sample. Then the CFU/g will be determined for each sample. The processing of raw milk
is known as pasteurization. This method deals with assuring the milk is free from bacteria before it
has been distributed so the public can use. Pasteurization allows for the nutritious properties to be
kept and destroy the harmful microorganisms. The dairy productis also grade based on the fat
content of animal, fat of product, temperature animal and temperature of pasteurization and cooling
process. A grade A indicates that all the listed measures are met. Using the plate count method and
determining the coliform number can indicate if milk

The Paradox of Dominate Ideologies in the Fight of Social...
Art is used in mass media to influence people, especially people in the generation and culture we
live in today. The majority of art young people receive in our culture is through television and in
particularly popular culture networks, like MTV. The television show on MTV called The Hills is
an example of a show that promotes dominant ideologyto young children/ teenagers. Slightly
opposite of that would be another show on MTV called Jersey Shore, which is an example of a
show that partly reinforces and partly challenges dominant ideology to the same type of audience.
The two shows are looking at people who are in their 20s and there life as they live it in their
current situation, they both claim to be reality television with no scripts.... Show more content on

While watching the two shows there are many differences, however one major thing that stood
out to me while I was watching was the differences of food and quantity. Within The Hills there
is almost never times where we see the cast members eating a meal, if we do see them at a
restaurant they are drinking but never eating. In the rare few times that we do see food at the
table we hardly ever see them eat, and the food that is placed in front of them are small portions
of salads or other healthy substances of food. There is differences between in the food that the
males of the show eat and the females eat, again on the rare times that food is involved the
women are seen to have the salads where the men are seen to have meat substance of food,
however, both still falling on the relatively small size portions of food. Women s relationship
with food is always different then men s because women are seen to need less food, and seen to
need to diet. Men need more food not only because they are seen as bigger but also because in
order from them to diet/ gain muscle they need to eat lots of protein for working out. Women are
also seduced into losing weight also with implications that come with it through the media we have.
Many of the advertisements we see focused on women lately deal with the issue of women losing
weight, getting fit, and looking like there favourite celebrity. Admittedly, women are continually
bombarded with advertisements

Native American Religion Chapter 3 Summary
In Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, the book highlights some interesting parts about indigenous religions of
North America and Africa. For starters, in the indigenous religions, they have some interesting
beliefs about how the world was created. Many of the beliefs they hold about the origin of the
creation of man, is from ancient myths of North America. The belief that North America is the
motherland for all creation. However, each native religionhas different t how they describe their
superman being. Another interesting aspect about the indigenous religions of the native American
was the tale about how the coyote became a dirt color. At first, the coyote was green and was
envious of the bluebird which was a beautiful blue. The coyote eventually asked the bluebird how it
got its color and eventually, the coyote became... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An arrogant spirit filled the coyote and he walked proudly, so every creature would admire. The
arrogant coyote wasn t looking where he was going one day and tripped and fell in a pile of dirt.
When the coyote got up, its color changed from the beautiful blue to a dirt color. I found this tale
interesting because it shows the danger of arrogance and some of the moral teachings of
humbleness in indigenous native American religions. I believe that religions that have tales about
how their moral and ethical teaching came about are interesting because I can trace the source of
how it came about. Chapter 3 described the indigenous religions of Africa and the myths,
supernatural being s history, and the incorporation of Islam and Christianity into the different
indigenous religions. I found it interesting that many of the indigenous religions keep the tradition
from their culture into Islam and Christianity. In Islam for instance, it has spread through North
Africa and in West Africa where many of its followers retain beliefs about possession by spirits

Homework Is Learning Assignments Practiced Or Completed...
Homework Homework is learning assignments practiced or completed outside of school hours. The
majority of schools in the United States homework is assigned to students as work to be completed
at home, outside of the classroom, and returned to the teacher for credit.
However, only about 35% of school districts have an actual homework policy set in place
(Roderique, Polloway, Cumblad, Epstein, Bursuck, 1994, p. 483). Without a homework policy
teachers are left on their own to determine how to meet the homework needs of their students. This
leads to inconsistent expectations for both families and students from year to year. Clear classroom,
school and district homework policies provide the student with healthy long term learning habits.
Three aspects of homework that entail costs and or produce benefits for home and school contexts
are time, homework design, and family involvement (Van Voorhis, 2011).
Time
After school schedules of students vary greatly. Many students are involved in sports and other
activities, making lengthy homework assignments challenging. Clear expectations and directions
for homework will help students and families build a homework habit that is easy to follow and
convenient to return. Many schools have adopted the 10 minute rule as a general guide for
developmentally appropriate time on homework; for example, students in the elementary and
middle grades should be assigned roughly 10 minutes multiplied by the grade level (i.e., 30 minutes

The Effect Of Substrate Concentration On The Activity Of The Enzyme Catalase
A Level Biology Project
Aims
This is an experiment to examine how the concentration of the substrate hydrogen peroxide affects
the rate of reaction of the enzyme catalase.
Background Information
Enzymes such as Catalase are protein molecules which are found in living cells. They are used to
speed up specific reactions in the cells. They are all very specific as each enzyme just performs one
particular reaction.
Catalase is an enzyme found in food such as potato and liver. It is used for removing Hydrogen
Peroxide from the cells. Hydrogen Peroxide is the poisonous by product of metabolism. Catalase
speeds up the decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide into water ... Show more content on

To ensure this is a fair test all the variables except for the concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide must
be kept the same for all the experiments. Variables that must not be altered include:
Temperature, yeast concentration, type of yeast, batch of yeast, volume of yeast, volume of
hydrogen peroxide, air pressure and humidity.
When measuring the volumes of Hydrogen Peroxide, Yeast and Water the measurement should be
taken by looking at the scale at an angle of 90 degrees to it to avoid any parallax error.
Predictions
I predict that as the substrate concentration increases, the rate of reaction will go up at a directly
proportional rate until the solution becomes saturated with the substrate hydrogen peroxide. When
this saturation point is reached, then adding extra substrate will make no difference.
The rate steadily increases when more substrate is added because more of the active sites of the
enzyme are being used which results in more reactions so the required amount of oxygen is made
more quickly. Once the amount of substrate molecules added exceeds the number of active sites
available then the rate of reaction will no longer go up. This is because the maximum number of
reactions are being done at once so any extra substrate molecules have to wait until some of the
active sites

Stimulus And Brand Selection
This study is an attempt to fill the gaps identified in the available literature on the association of
stimulus and brand selection. The present study measured the stimulus and its impact on brand
selection or purchase decision in the Indian online retail. To assess this relationship, different
models have been designed to investigate and measure the stimulus. For investigation purposes, a
qualitative model has been developed and presented in Chapters earlier. This model prioritized the
various factors of stimulus in context of the online retail. Next to this, the measurement aspect of
stimulus was addressed by the development of a quantitative model shown in Chapters earlier.
This model has been used to develop and validate the scale for the measurement of stimulus in the
Indian online retail. The present study comprises of the following: A broad and thorough literature
review has been conducted on the association of stimulus and brand purchase decision. The
literature review consists of the evolution and definitions of individual, technology and societal
groups and brand purchase decision, a classification of available literature, and various factors
which constitute Stimulus in S O R model. Based on this basis of this review, gaps, and a research
agenda was identified which provided a sound base to conduct the present study. A literature review

In the 13th century, there was much debate between Christians and Jews about the correctness of
each other s beliefs. In Barcelona in the year 1263, a disputation occurred between Jewish convert,
or a Christian, Paul Christiani and Rabbi Moses. During this time it is important to know that in
Aragon, where Barcelona is, a Christian King, James I, ruled the region. Therefore, it was quite
courageous for Rabbi Moses to visit for the disputation, even though he was promised freedom of
speech by King James. In particular, the Barcelona Disputation was focused on the Talmud and the
understanding of the Messiah. This writing will examine both a Christian account and a Jewish
account of the disputation. Firstly, in the Christian account, the author

Realism In Stephen King s The Boogeyman
Stephen King s short story The Boogeyman is a thrilling adventure that incorporates an urban
legend that has many names throughout the world, and therefore makes any reader able to
identify with this story. It pulls you in, making you question whether the stories your parents,
cousins, or siblings you had finally deemed as unrealistic and fake were fictional at all. Why is
King s story so eerie? Is it the realism in the story, or the fact that the creature being described may
have always been a small weakness for you? The scientific article The Bogeymanin which we are
explained the origin and purpose for the monster may have the answers to these questions. After
all, how probable is it that an unidentified creature will happen to appear in sight tonight? In the
scientific article, it is explained that the purpose of the boogeyman is to frighten people in order
for them to fit the norm in society. King s article also uses the boogeyman in order to frighten
people, but does it so that the man, Lester Billings seems crazed, and yet in a sense, believable. For
example, in the short story, Billings is present in a psychiatrist s office and is telling his story to
the therapist. This plays into the realism within the story, as many people have therapists and
believe in supernatural forces such as: ghosts, vampires, demons, etc (not everyone goes to therapy
for these reasons, but it is safe to assume some people do suffer from paranoia within this particular
topic). The

School Start Times And High Quality Sleep
The American education system is diverse and unique, and one aspect that varies wildly across
the country is school start times. Deciding the start times for schools is dependent on many
factors including bus schedules (Edwards, 2012), biological development (Borlase, Gander,
Gibson, 2013; Perkinson Gloor, Lemola, Grob, 2013), and parental preference (Edwards, 2012;
Perkinson Gloor et al., 2013). School start times are considered one aspect that can affect sleep
duration, since they affect wake time. Adequate, high quality sleep is extremely important for
adolescents and inadequate sleep can lead to a number of negative outcomes including poorer
physical and mental health, as well as poorer academic performance (Borlase et al., 2013;
Edwards, 2012; Keller, Smith, Gilbert, Bi, Haak, Buckhalt, 2015; Paksarian, Rudolph, Jian Ping,
Merikangas, 2015; Perkinson Gloor, et al., 2013). Therefore, school start times are important to the
field of education, because start times affect sleep and sleep, or lack thereof, can affect cognitive
ability and performance. We are always looking to improve our schools and better educate our
children, and the adjustment of the start time is a small change that may have a big impact.
Overall, the results of these studies suggest that early school start times are detrimental to all
students, as elementary, middle, and high school students were examined in at least one of the five
studies. Students at schools with early school start times

Even though talent came in cycles (Wednesday, p. 76) with the best players and teams coming in

If this ideal could become widespread, if not only feminists but others as well could recognize that

An Important Skill For First And Second Language Learners
1.INTRODUCTION
Reading is an important skill for first and second language learners. Failing to learn to read and
write in the early years results in poor self esteem for learners than any other cause (Casey, 2001).
Computer technology proved to have many advantages for students with learning difficulties,
including motivational aspects and development of fine motor skills (Casey, 2001).
A review of the reading research in L1 and L2 on the effect of a variety of technologies on students
achievement has shown two contradictory findings. The fist line of research found that use of
technology had no significant effect on students reading skill development. Computer assisted
instruction had no effect on the reading achievement of 3rd 6th grade students in a low socio
economic status community. No significant differences were also found between boys and girls
reading achievement (Hamilton, 1995). In another study, Martindale, Pearson, Curda Pilcher (2005)
found that 5th grade students who used computer based and web based software applications
(FCAT Explorer) scored significantly higher on the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment
Test) than elementary school students who did not use the FCAT Explorer. At the high schoollevel,
no significant differences in scores were found between students who used the FCAT Explorer and
those who did not use it. In a third study, Humble (2000) found that when 2nd grade students used

Theme Of Deceit In The Odyssey
Leading themes in The Odyssey include humility, perseverance, and deceit. Deceit guides some of
the characters actions, and it also moves the story forward. The poem showcases deception as a
common tool among both the antagonists and the protagonists. Each group utilizes their wits with
various intentions ranging from maintaining fidelity, self preservation, and murder. Their lies and
illusions usually solve their problems and allow them to help others. For example, Odysseus s
deceptions help him defeat adversaries and also help him return home. He and other characters
deploy duplicity to achieve better ends, and that shows that duplicity in the poem is not always
negative. Furthermore, the deceiving actions of the characters also reveal that skills in deceit are
valuable and critical to the tale, and that the original storytellers respected those skills. The Ancient
Greeks valued the ability to deceive as evidenced by The Odysseythrough the depiction of certain
characters such as Penelope, Odysseus, Athena, and Hermes. By the poem s telling of Penelope
s story, it shows that people end up respecting skills in deceit and cleverness. Penelope s story
goes as follows: she resorts to deceit in order to remain faithful to her husband. No one in the
poem disapproves of her deceitful actions except the people she dupes. Afterward, readers
remember Penelope for her unwavering fidelity, and also for her tricks to keep it. The first trick
readers encounter involves Penelope

Environmental Effects Of Acid Rain
Acid rain, simply put, is a mixture of rainwater and a few specific chemicals that are emitted both
naturally and non naturally. The process occurs in the lowest layer of the atmosphere, the
troposphere. When compounds such as sulfuric dioxide(SO2) and nitrogen oxides(NO, NO2), are
transported to this layer and react with the other parts of the troposphere(water, oxygen, carbon
dioxide). Acid rain was first discovered in Sweden in 1872, but has been seen as a more prevalent
problem in modern times. Although research had been conducted for many years on acid rain, it
did not become an issue for society until around the 1980 s. Acid rain s effects were vast, harming
natural environments, architecture, and even the public s health. Regulation of chemical emissions
have lessened the threat of acid rain, yet it remains a problem to this day. A
As previously mentioned, acid rain is caused by the mixture of chemical emissions with the
elements of the troposphere. It s very important to note that water has a natural acidity, it s the
excess of oxides that cause the problem. But how did those emissions and oxides make it there?
Naturally, compounds like carbon dioxide(CO2), nitric oxide(NO), and sulfur dioxide(SO2), are
released through just a few processes: decomposition of organic matter, electric discharge(reactions
with lightning and the ozone), as well as release of gasses in volcanic eruptions. However, these
only contribute to the natural acidity of water. Human

The social status here divides the royal family with the people. The serious relationship between
these two groups is prohibited as this will give a bad image to the royal family. That s why the
young man is being trialled in the arena as his punishment when the love between the princess and
himself has been known by the king.
Lastly, the theme that also can be interpreted in this short story is loyalty or we can said, blindly
loyal. This theme covers up mostly the part starting when the young man has been accused and
will be trialled in the arena. The young man loyal to the king s command and does not dispute or
argue about it. The people also blindly loyal to their king and no one questioned about the king s
command although they know that this is not fair for the young man.

First symbol is the arena itself. The arena symbolizes the place of judgement for an

Shakespeare Conspiracy
William Shakespeare, the renowned poet credited with writing 37 plays and 154 sonnets
symbolizes brilliance in literature. The playwright s legendary plots and characters along with his
portrayal of love proves him to be one of the greatest poet of all time. Despite the authors profound
successes, the authenticity of Shakespeare s writing is a mysterious conspiracy. A missing paper
trail, similarities found in works of Shakespeare s and his contemporaries, and an unsettling exhibit
question the Bard s credibility. There remains an ongoing debate between Shakespeare s devoted
admirers and anti Stratfordians, who unambiguously believe Shakespeare is a fraud due to lack of
documentation, similarities between Shakespeare s works and his enemies,... Show more content on

An exhibit on display at the Yale Center for British Art, takes a look into the undescribed
appearance of the Bard. The Searching for Shakespeare exhibit contains eight images of
Shakespeare along with rare theatrical artifacts and elements. Inexcusable differences in
physical attributes of Shakespeare in the art pieces lead people to believe that the artists who
painted him were as in the dark about what the Bard truly looked like as we are. This physical
difference between characteristics of the Bard s look gave anti Stratfordians another reason to
doubt the imaginative writing claimed to be Shakespeare s due to the obscurity of how the Bard
looked. It seemed as if painters themself were uncertain of his appearance. Two portraits included
in the exhibit that have been widely accepted as the authentic appearance of Shakespeare have
probably contributed most to the doubts. One posthumous engraving by Martin Droeshout, a
Dutch artist of the 1600 s and a memorial bust in Stratford s Trinity Church are both disconcerting.
In both pieces the playwright looks distant, slightly uncomfortable and vacant looking, as if he d
rather not be looking at all. The two compositions make people suspicious about the Bard and lead
some to the conspiracy that Shakespeare wasn t a real person, but someone who didn t want their
identity shown or a group of

A Civil Action Film Analysis
In the movie, A Civil Action , Jan Schlichtmann, a personal injury lawyer, takes on an orphan case
from Woburn, Massachusetts concerning a local tannery that had polluted the water supply in the
town. Several families (Toonneys, Auferios, Anderson, Kaynes, and Robbins) all had children who
died from leukemia. (1) The devastated parents believed their children were slowly poisoned by
drinking waterfrom the town s contaminated water supply. Schlichtmann, being a man only about
the money rather than the justice, decides to take this case because he finds reason to believe that
trichloroethylene (TCE) from Riley s Tannery, a subsidy for Beatrice Foods, and chemical
company, W.R. Grace are both very powerful and wealthy companies. Schlichtmann

Graphene Is A Potential Candidate Material
Graphene is a hexagonal two dimensional (2D) monolayer of honeycomb lattice packed carbon
structure that was discovered and successfully isolated from bulk graphite just a few years ago [1].
It is continuously receiving attention from the research community due to its outstanding
mechanical, thermal and electrical properties [2]. Due to its fascinating properties, grapheneis
emerging as a potential candidate material for enormous nano technological applications such as
memory devices [3], nano sensors [4], nano actuators [5], field effect transistors (FFT) [3], gigahertz
oscillators [6], energy production and storage [7], clean energy devices [3] and room temperature
humidity sensing applications [8] etc. In addition to these applications, graphene also attracts
prodigious attention as strengthening element in polymer based composites because it was reported
to be the strongest material with outstanding elastic properties and high intrinsic strength [9 13].
Apparently, the important of these features depends on the structural perfection of the hexagonal
graphene lattice and strong in plane sp2 bond between carbonatoms. Characterization of the
mechanical properties of graphene is essential both from a technological perspective for its reliable
applications and from a fundamental interest to understanding its deformation physics [14 16]. In
material science, fracture toughnessis a property that describes the ability of a material containing a
crack to resist fracture, and

The Tragedy Of The Iranian Hostage Crisis
There was once time of prosperity and hope in this great nation. A time where it seemed that
nothing could go wrong and a time that America seemed to be on top of the world as a
powerhouse; however, by the late 1970 s, that time was no more. America went from an economic
powerhouse to a country struggling to survive. America went from the land of the free and the
home of the brave to citizens having no identity of patriotism following the Vietnam War. America
went from doing the attacking and righting the wrong in the world, to being harassed and taken
advantage of. This harassment is told through David Farber s novel, Taken Hostage, which details
the hostage takeover that involved sixty six American citizens who had to endure 444 agonizing
days of being taken hostage because America was no longer in control. During the time of the
Iranian hostage crisis, Americans were held back by the tragedy for numerous reasons, many of
which stem from the immediate reaction of combined shock and frustration towards the United
StatesGovernment and President Carter, a lack of knowledge of the ongoing strained relationship
between the two countries, and finally, the surprising tension and ineffectiveness of the Carter
Administration s foreign policy.
In the months leading up to the hostage crisis, the morale and patriotism expressed by the
American people was gloom and not promising for the nation; Especially in the last years of the
decade, it was mainly just hard times (Farber, 10).

Adapting Canada to the Future of a World With Scarce...
Introduction Water is just more than drinking water. Water is the most basic and vital resource
that humans need to sustain themselves. Water is used for food production from irrigating crops
to actually manufacturing them. Canada like the world, uses water for sanitation, cleaning,
manufacturing and daily function. Demand and supply will soon be at a crossroad, as increasing
population creates increases in pollution, waste water and global warming (Baker, 2007). This
paper will seek to examine the effects of global warming on Canada s freshwater system, the
effects of pollution and will evaluate how Canada manages its freshwater now and what Canada
can do to form policies that will adapt to the future crisis in Canada s freshwater.... Show more

The western prairies provinces (WPP) have an area of two million km2, these regions are the
main agricultural and food producing regions in all of Canada (Schindler, 2006). As global
warming increases, more water will be used for irrigation for crops. Every year, 2.5 km3 of
water is used for irrigation on 1 million acres of land. The water comes from reservoirs and lakes
that trap snowmelt run off from the Rocky Mountains, however only twenty percent of this water
is returned to the rivers. The WPP temperatures have increased by 4 degrees since 1970
(Schindler, 2006. Most of the rural areas are not receiving 14 24% of their previous annual
precipitation in the 1900 s. The summer flows have decreased 20 84% due to the increased
warming through its effects on evapotranspiration and evaporation (Schindler, 2001). Low water
flows can cause an escalation of water retention that results in increased nutrient retention, thus
proliferating Eutrophication. (Helmer,1999). This imbalance between water evaporation, water
usage and water replenishment will create scarce resource for Western Canada s near future.
Canada s Challenged Future It is important to know what is endangering Canada, however it is
even more vital to understand the future of Canada s waters due to global warming and pollution.

  • 2. Consumerism Woodhouse Summary In consumerism Woodhouse starts off by telling his audience what consumerism is. Woodhouse also talks about the benefits of it such as stimulating the economy and facilitating peoples liberties to shape their identities and cultures . This is followed by the downside of consumerism that it is a manipulated and environmentally destructive habit leading to too many units of stuff being designed, produced, advertised, sold, and discarded . This brief introduction really helps lay the foundation for the rest of the article and foreshadows what will be talked about. Woodhouse then goes into the agents . The agents are the ones that are actually responsible for producing consumerism. These are the chemists that created harmful synthetic pesticide, product designers that create new and attractive products, and civil engineers that build roads that create urban sprawl as just a few examples. Without this group of people there would be no production of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The means is just the technological advancement of today s world. Woodhouse uses examples of means such as research, marketing, and technology in general. This is a crucial point in consumerism because without the means then the agents wouldn t have the capability to mass produce items. This nonhuman technology also gives agents a certain level of calculability, and predictably, unprecedented to others. Woodhouse also explains that without sites then businesses and governments wouldn t have anywhere to test their ideas or develop new ideas. Fast food restaurants, military research and development, and college universities are all places of research. College universities are a good example because they get government grant money to test new theories and technologies. If anything should prove successful during research though it is almost guaranteed that it will be mass produced and used to help stimulate the economy creating tax ... • 3. Chimpanzees Exhibit Culture Through Social Interaction The concept of culture to many individuals may be perceived as a combination of language, beliefs, norms, values and customs shared amongst individuals; passed along generations to be carried out within a society. In a society, individuals make up social groupings that form ideas, behaviors and materials objects that encompass what they define as culture. Culture is not only essential for survival, but for growth and communication; through interaction, observation and imitation our behavioral patterns thus create culture. Since culture is such a tool kit for survival, it does not come as a surprise that culture is apparent in animals. Animal culture refers to the theory of social interaction, through means of learning, artifacts, behavior patterns, animals such as chimpanzees, pass their knowledge through generations, much like humans do. Throughout this paper I will begin to identify that similar to humans, chimpanzees exhibit culture. By looking at norms, behaviors, attitudes, and comparing to those of human characteristics, I will prove chimpanzees learn culture through social interaction. Culture has a strong influence on a variety of aspects in our lives; many may know it to be an aspect uniquely acquired by humans. The debate drives onto scrutinize if apes, such as chimpanzees are influenced by culture and its impact on chimpanzee social groups. The concept of social learning has become such a popular source in distinguishing if animals, do in fact exhibit culture. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Cuban Revolution, which began in the early 1950 s, was an overthrow of a corrupt government. Throughout Fidel Castro s multiple attempts to improve the horrific conditions of the Cuban population, the Revolution became a long and tragic journey beginning with the 26th of July Movement, to The Bay of Pigs invasion, to The Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1940 to 1944, communist Fulgencio Batista withheld power as the president of Cuba and then from 1952 to 1959, United States backed dictator until fleeing Cuba because of Fidel Castro s 26th of July Movement. Socialist Fidel Castro governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008. Fidel Castro s intent was to provide Cuba with an honest democratic government by diminishing the corrupt way in which the country was run, the large role the United States played in the running of Cuba as well as the poor treatment the living conditions of the lower class. • 5. Food Safety Is Extremely Severe Worldwide Food Safety in China Food safety tends to be a hot topic in Food safety these years. Though the meaning is similar, different from food security, food safety concentrates more on health aspects rather than sufficiency. So what is food safety? Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent foodborne illness. (AmercianPeanutCouncil, 2014) This prevents civils from severe health hazards and in this way is the food safety similar to the definition of food defense. I collected data from different websites and summarized them in a chart. Here is the performance of countries based on their 2015 food safety score. (Charlebois, 2014) Based on this chart, China ranks 42 in the whole world. It s clear that the situation of China s food safety is extremely severe worldwide. The cause of the food safety problem is intricate; however, before I explain the complex cause of food safety in China, I d like to illustrate the phenomenon of China s food safety problem which will definitely promote the comprehensibility of the causes of food safety problems. People from different fields hold different views upon food safety phenomenon. There are three general types of Bipolar Disorder and then a fourth category for those who do not fall within any of the previous categories. Bipolar I Disorder is defined by manic episodes that last at least 7 days and then a depressive episode lasting at least two weeks. Symptoms may be severe enough to seek immediate medical care. Typical treatments for bipolar disorder include: psychotherapy, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and some Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (NIMH n.d.). In some cases, doctors will prescribe a medication to combat the depression, a medication to combat the mania, and then medication to combat any side effects caused by the other medications. Patients who exhibit a higher rate of serotonin 5 HT binding prior to starting medication had a higher chance of recurring episodes, even while taking medication, than did those who had a lower rate of serotonin 5 HT binding prior to medication (Parsey 2013). Lithium was a drug that works within the nervous system to strengthen the neural connections between cells to increase cell signaling therefore limiting the frequency and intensity of manic depressive episodes. They provide a significant amount of care to low income, uninsured, and vulnerable populations. While treating these types of populations, they are still able to provide high cost services such as trauma and burn care. They often take on additional roles and responsibilities such as the training of medical and nursing students (Coughlin et al., 2014). These hospitalsystems are well known for their open door policy (Wynn et al., 2002). They will examine and treat all individuals, whether or not they can pay for any of their services. The hospitals are not distinguished from other providers by ownership. Some are publicly owned and operated by local or state governments, while others are non profit. However, they are distinguished by their commitment to provide access to care for all individuals with limited or no access to health care due to their finical circumstances, insurance status or health condition (What is a Safety Net Hospital, 2015). Due to safety net hospitals urban locations, they tend to treat more uninsured patients who will frequently show up in the emergency room. Even if their care is not critical or an emergency, these patients cannot be turned away. Introduction Initially the question of the affects of parks and their various attributes on real estate value may seem an absurd question for an Economic Developer to think about. However, the value of real estate is of prime importance to the community and the Economic Developer due to the nature of land as an appreciating commodity. Therefore it is necessary that we study the possibility that real estate and land values could be modified by the a park. Non residential entities should primarily be focused on factors such as infrastructure, spatial needs and accessibility as opposed to more aesthetic or resident serving attributes. Park shape, function, size and service area are also discussed. Park shape has to do with the geometry of the park relative to land uses surrounding it. Park function will always be associated with the types of activities that can take place in the park. These activities can include passive characteristics and active characteristics. Passive characteristics are non intensive properties such as the presence of benches, good landscaping or other decorative elements such as ponds, gardens and artistic pieces. Active characteristics refer to things that people use such as playgrounds, fields of play for various sports, pools and pavilions or other activity hosting structures. A genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation. An example of a genocide in Germany is the Holocaustwhere Elie Wiesel, the author of Night, showed the Jews experience from the horrors, tortures, and killings in the death camps. At the same time, a mass execution was happening in Nanjing, China, where the Japanese soldiers were slaughtering and torturing thousands of the Chinese. The Jews and Chinese suffered beatings from their oppressors while they were trying to recover from their recent injuries. In the memoir, Night, Idek, a German Kapo, conducted the Jews viciously, making almost any injuries very difficult to recover from. For example, Idek was viciously beating Elie when they crossed paths. Idek lost his temper and caused himself to jump on Elie. Idek violently beat Elie continuously until Elie was covered in blood. Even though Elie tried not to howl in pain in the way of accepting his false, Idek mistook him and beat Elise harder and harder (Wiesel 53). This was an example of cruelty because Elie was being beaten for just being in Idek s path while Idek was venting his anger. Idek s actions showed cruelty because he attacked Elie without stopping to let Elie recover even though, Elie was nearly dying from the beating. Another example of beatings, was that in the Nanjing database of war, Alan Axelrod s The Rape of Nanjing, the war crime database stated that Atrocities reported and (in many cases) documented include a rampage through the Nanking Hospital, during which soldiers tore bandages from the flesh of the wounded, smashed casts with clubs, and raped nurses (Axelrod). • 16. The Doctrine Of Christian Universalism The Doctrine of Christian Universalism Archie J. Spencer, Th.D THS 540: Introduction to Christian Theology Shahrzad Jamali ACTS Seminaries Fall 2017 Universalism is perhaps the greatest unspoken premise of modern thought within the Christian church. N.T wright The salvation of humankind has been always presented in 3 possible positions: 1) none will be saved, 2) some will be saved, or 3) all will be saved. The traditional Christian teaching has been always focused on the second position and maintained that only some of people will be saved. But there have been ongoing debates within this position about who exactly will be the saved group? And what will be the condition of the lost ones? Christian Universalism is a school of Christian theology that is focused on the doctrine of universal salvation. This doctrine holds the third position and believes that eventually all human beings, regardless of their faith, will be saved and will enjoy everlasting life with Christ. This doctrine has been presented differently by those who advocated it throughout the centuries and various labels have been used to refer to this doctrine, including Universal restoration , universal restitution , universal reconciliation , and universal salvation. Universalism is also closely related with other complicated theological issues, such as the relationship between God s nature, his love and His justice, free will and predestination, and the retributive punishment. Therefore, it ... • 26. Homework Is Learning Assignments Practiced Or Completed... Homework Homework is learning assignments practiced or completed outside of school hours. The majority of schools in the United States homework is assigned to students as work to be completed at home, outside of the classroom, and returned to the teacher for credit. However, only about 35% of school districts have an actual homework policy set in place (Roderique, Polloway, Cumblad, Epstein, Bursuck, 1994, p. 483). Without a homework policy teachers are left on their own to determine how to meet the homework needs of their students. This leads to inconsistent expectations for both families and students from year to year. Clear classroom, school and district homework policies provide the student with healthy long term learning habits. Three aspects of homework that entail costs and or produce benefits for home and school contexts are time, homework design, and family involvement (Van Voorhis, 2011). Time After school schedules of students vary greatly. Many students are involved in sports and other activities, making lengthy homework assignments challenging. Clear expectations and directions for homework will help students and families build a homework habit that is easy to follow and convenient to return. Many schools have adopted the 10 minute rule as a general guide for developmentally appropriate time on homework; for example, students in the elementary and middle grades should be assigned roughly 10 minutes multiplied by the grade level (i.e., 30 minutes for a ... The Effect Of Substrate Concentration On The Activity Of The Enzyme Catalase A Level Biology Project Aims This is an experiment to examine how the concentration of the substrate hydrogen peroxide affects the rate of reaction of the enzyme catalase. Background Information Enzymes such as Catalase are protein molecules which are found in living cells. They are used to speed up specific reactions in the cells. They are all very specific as each enzyme just performs one particular reaction. Catalase is an enzyme found in food such as potato and liver. It is used for removing Hydrogen Peroxide from the cells. Hydrogen Peroxide is the poisonous by product of metabolism. Catalase speeds up the decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide into water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To ensure this is a fair test all the variables except for the concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide must be kept the same for all the experiments. Variables that must not be altered include: Temperature, yeast concentration, type of yeast, batch of yeast, volume of yeast, volume of hydrogen peroxide, air pressure and humidity. When measuring the volumes of Hydrogen Peroxide, Yeast and Water the measurement should be taken by looking at the scale at an angle of 90 degrees to it to avoid any parallax error. Predictions I predict that as the substrate concentration increases, the rate of reaction will go up at a directly proportional rate until the solution becomes saturated with the substrate hydrogen peroxide. When this saturation point is reached, then adding extra substrate will make no difference. The rate steadily increases when more substrate is added because more of the active sites of the enzyme are being used which results in more reactions so the required amount of oxygen is made more quickly. Once the amount of substrate molecules added exceeds the number of active sites available then the rate of reaction will no longer go up. This is because the maximum number of reactions are being done at once so any extra substrate molecules have to wait until some of the active sites ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Realism In Stephen King s The Boogeyman Stephen King s short story The Boogeyman is a thrilling adventure that incorporates an urban legend that has many names throughout the world, and therefore makes any reader able to identify with this story. It pulls you in, making you question whether the stories your parents, cousins, or siblings you had finally deemed as unrealistic and fake were fictional at all. Why is King s story so eerie? Is it the realism in the story, or the fact that the creature being described may have always been a small weakness for you? The scientific article The Bogeymanin which we are explained the origin and purpose for the monster may have the answers to these questions. After all, how probable is it that an unidentified creature will happen to appear in sight tonight? In the scientific article, it is explained that the purpose of the boogeyman is to frighten people in order for them to fit the norm in society. King s article also uses the boogeyman in order to frighten people, but does it so that the man, Lester Billings seems crazed, and yet in a sense, believable. For example, in the short story, Billings is present in a psychiatrist s office and is telling his story to the therapist. This plays into the realism within the story, as many people have therapists and believe in supernatural forces such as: ghosts, vampires, demons, etc (not everyone goes to therapy for these reasons, but it is safe to assume some people do suffer from paranoia within this particular topic). • 33. School Start Times And High Quality Sleep The American education system is diverse and unique, and one aspect that varies wildly across the country is school start times. Deciding the start times for schools is dependent on many factors including bus schedules (Edwards, 2012), biological development (Borlase, Gander, Gibson, 2013; Perkinson Gloor, Lemola, Grob, 2013), and parental preference (Edwards, 2012; Perkinson Gloor et al., 2013). School start times are considered one aspect that can affect sleep duration, since they affect wake time. Adequate, high quality sleep is extremely important for adolescents and inadequate sleep can lead to a number of negative outcomes including poorer physical and mental health, as well as poorer academic performance (Borlase et al., 2013; Edwards, 2012; Keller, Smith, Gilbert, Bi, Haak, Buckhalt, 2015; Paksarian, Rudolph, Jian Ping, Merikangas, 2015; Perkinson Gloor, et al., 2013). Therefore, school start times are important to the field of education, because start times affect sleep and sleep, or lack thereof, can affect cognitive ability and performance. We are always looking to improve our schools and better educate our children, and the adjustment of the start time is a small change that may have a big impact. Failing to learn to read and write in the early years results in poor self esteem for learners than any other cause (Casey, 2001). Computer technology proved to have many advantages for students with learning difficulties, including motivational aspects and development of fine motor skills (Casey, 2001). A review of the reading research in L1 and L2 on the effect of a variety of technologies on students achievement has shown two contradictory findings. The fist line of research found that use of technology had no significant effect on students reading skill development. Computer assisted instruction had no effect on the reading achievement of 3rd 6th grade students in a low socio economic status community. No significant differences were also found between boys and girls reading achievement (Hamilton, 1995). In another study, Martindale, Pearson, Curda Pilcher (2005) found that 5th grade students who used computer based and web based software applications (FCAT Explorer) scored significantly higher on the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) than elementary school students who did not use the FCAT Explorer. • 40. Theme Of Deceit In The Odyssey Leading themes in The Odyssey include humility, perseverance, and deceit. Deceit guides some of the characters actions, and it also moves the story forward. The poem showcases deception as a common tool among both the antagonists and the protagonists. Each group utilizes their wits with various intentions ranging from maintaining fidelity, self preservation, and murder. Their lies and illusions usually solve their problems and allow them to help others. For example, Odysseus s deceptions help him defeat adversaries and also help him return home. He and other characters deploy duplicity to achieve better ends, and that shows that duplicity in the poem is not always negative. Furthermore, the deceiving actions of the characters also reveal that skills in deceit are valuable and critical to the tale, and that the original storytellers respected those skills. The Ancient Greeks valued the ability to deceive as evidenced by The Odysseythrough the depiction of certain characters such as Penelope, Odysseus, Athena, and Hermes. By the poem s telling of Penelope s story, it shows that people end up respecting skills in deceit and cleverness. Penelope s story goes as follows: she resorts to deceit in order to remain faithful to her husband. No one in the poem disapproves of her deceitful actions except the people she dupes. Afterward, readers remember Penelope for her unwavering fidelity, and also for her tricks to keep it. The first trick readers encounter involves Penelope ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Environmental Effects Of Acid Rain Acid rain, simply put, is a mixture of rainwater and a few specific chemicals that are emitted both naturally and non naturally. The process occurs in the lowest layer of the atmosphere, the troposphere. When compounds such as sulfuric dioxide(SO2) and nitrogen oxides(NO, NO2), are transported to this layer and react with the other parts of the troposphere(water, oxygen, carbon dioxide). Acid rain was first discovered in Sweden in 1872, but has been seen as a more prevalent problem in modern times. Although research had been conducted for many years on acid rain, it did not become an issue for society until around the 1980 s. Acid rain s effects were vast, harming natural environments, architecture, and even the public s health. Regulation of chemical emissions have lessened the threat of acid rain, yet it remains a problem to this day. A As previously mentioned, acid rain is caused by the mixture of chemical emissions with the elements of the troposphere. It s very important to note that water has a natural acidity, it s the excess of oxides that cause the problem. But how did those emissions and oxides make it there? Naturally, compounds like carbon dioxide(CO2), nitric oxide(NO), and sulfur dioxide(SO2), are released through just a few processes: decomposition of organic matter, electric discharge(reactions with lightning and the ozone), as well as release of gasses in volcanic eruptions. However, these only contribute to the natural acidity of water. Human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Searching for Shakespeare exhibit contains eight images of Shakespeare along with rare theatrical artifacts and elements. Inexcusable differences in physical attributes of Shakespeare in the art pieces lead people to believe that the artists who painted him were as in the dark about what the Bard truly looked like as we are. This physical difference between characteristics of the Bard s look gave anti Stratfordians another reason to doubt the imaginative writing claimed to be Shakespeare s due to the obscurity of how the Bard looked. The western prairies provinces (WPP) have an area of two million km2, these regions are the main agricultural and food producing regions in all of Canada (Schindler, 2006). As global warming increases, more water will be used for irrigation for crops. Every year, 2.5 km3 of water is used for irrigation on 1 million acres of land. The water comes from reservoirs and lakes that trap snowmelt run off from the Rocky Mountains, however only twenty percent of this water is returned to the rivers. The WPP temperatures have increased by 4 degrees since 1970 (Schindler, 2006. Most of the rural areas are not receiving 14 24% of their previous annual precipitation in the 1900 s. The summer flows have decreased 20 84% due to the increased warming through its effects on evapotranspiration and evaporation (Schindler, 2001). Low water flows can cause an escalation of water retention that results in increased nutrient retention, thus proliferating Eutrophication. (Helmer,1999). This imbalance between water evaporation, water usage and water replenishment will create scarce resource for Western Canada s near future. Canada s Challenged Future It is important to know what is endangering Canada, however it is even more vital to understand the future of Canada s waters due to global warming and pollution. The World Bank reported that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
