Personal Ethics Paper
Personal Ethics Statement
According to Guido, ethics is the branch of philosophy concerned with the evaluation of human
action. A broader definition would be that ethics involves the principles or assumptions
underpinning the way individuals or groups ought to conduct themselves. In today's continuous
changing world, the one thing that remains constant for most of us is our personal value system of
beliefs, known as ethics. Ethics can also be referred to as morals. Therefore, ethics are those morals
that reflect and indicate issues that concern behaviors that are right or wrong and the good and bad
habits of individual character. This important standard of beliefs can in most cases create the
difference in attitudes from others both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a child I was taught to be polite and to never use obscenities, that there are many words within
the English language that I can use to express myself and this was enforce by family and teachers
and I was aware of the consequences of disobeying rules set forth. A core principle that was instilled
in me was to always ask for something, but most importantly the value of earning and deserving of
getting rewards, that nothing in life that is not earned without hard work and sacrifice. In earning
these rewards one can appreciate hard work and know the value of hard work. Another important
value taught to me as child is to be willing to share with others and that there is joy and fulfillment
in sharing and an appreciation for what you have and not to covet things your neighbors have. I had
to learn to appreciate what I had and show that appreciation and that has carried over into my adult
life wherein I appreciate gifts and people and I am very thankful for those in my life. I am very
careful of the friends I keep as one of the things instilled in me is that the people you surround
yourself is a reflection of the person you are.
As I became a teenager, an important lesson I learnt is to never judge others and to always respect

Ethics And The Enhanced Interrogation Techniques
ETHICS AND THE ENHANCED INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES
Introduction
The military and the government security organs normally apply numerous methods in obtaining
critical information about criminal activities. Some of these techniques are considered acceptable by
the human rights and other non–governmental organizations while others are considered as violating
the human rights as stated by the constitution of major countries and states. There has been a strong
debate on the use of these techniques and many have defined them as torture.
This paper considers the application of enhanced interrogation techniques and establishes the
ethicality and necessity of applying them in the fight against terror to obtain vital information. The
ethicality is discussed with reflection to the five frameworks of ethics.
While the law itself condemns use of torture for any purpose, torture becomes necessary to be used
in particular critical instances. According to Miles, the United States senate allowed the use of
enhanced interrogation techniques on a number of cases and detainees. The human rights should be
considered first in any event whether in interrogation or any other course of action1. The policy
makers have found themselves between hard and difficult decisions to make on the techniques for
obtaining vital information from terrorists who are trained heavily on resisting from giving
information when caught in the wrong side of the law.

Influencers on Yound Adults
There have been many arguments on this issue that whether family or friends have more influence
on young adults. Different people have different way of thinking on this issue. Some consider
friends to be more influential on the young adult while others have totally opposite views about it.
But according to my view and experience, young adults are more highly influenced by their friends
rather than their parents. As we know that, parents are our first teachers and teach us all the
fundamental social roles. They teach us how react at every situation of life for example how to
respect and behave with relatives and strangers. They are the one who teach us how to talk and make
new friends. Parents spend more time with their children. Since children don't have enough
experience and skills in both personal and social life, they mostly prefer parent to provide them most
of the information regarding to the matter. But despite off all the hard work of parents in teaching
the ethic and moral lesson, we youngster follow more of our friends than parents. Parent spend their
whole life in polishing the behaviors of their children but the influence of good or bad friends can
change the personality of a person totally in a very instant moment. They are many examples and
reason behind why youngsters are easily influenced by friends. First of all, young adult are more
mature today than previous years. They are given more freedom and are more out going now. They
have the ability to express

Traits Differentiating Scholars from Normal Students
According to the Oxford dictionary, a scholar is those who specialises in a particular branch of
study, especially the humanities. If the word is to be further defined, in archaic terms it means a
student or pupil. In an institute, there would be students and scholars. However, most scholars are
students too. What are the traits that distinguishes them from normal students? This will be further
explained below.
First and foremost, the most common trait a scholar needs to have is humility. This trait is most
commonly known to be defined as the quality of having a modest or low view of one's importance.
Therefore, a scholar should always view himself as an equal towards others and never as a superior,
which will lead to negative values such as arrogance and egoism. In my opinion this trait is what led
many scholars to succeed, as they would always be humble of their actions, which in result they
would be well respected and looked upon. Thus humility is a trait that must be present in a good
scholar.
In relation to the trait 'humility', another noticeable trait of a scholar is integrity. This trait is defined
as the attachment to moral and virtuous principles, such as honestly. As a result, this trait would be
present in everyone, however, not everyone practices this. For example, an honest person would be
trusted more than a person who repeatedly lies. This would show that the scholar would uphold the
value of integrity. Therefore a good scholar must possess this trait to earn

Leadership Philosophy : A Leader 's Employees, And Growth...
A clear leadership philosophy is important to the success of a leader, development of the leader's
employees, and growth of the organization. As a future leader, I will explore my own leadership
philosophy built on the principles of integrity, openness, and humility. I will discuss the importance
of creating an environment that fosters mutual respect, recognizes each individual's potential, and
inspires success. Using my own philosophy as a guide, I will discuss and analyze the approach a
commander takes in managing her most challenging leadership issue and will compare and contrast
her actions with my own leadership philosophy. My leadership philosophy is as follows: Leadership
is forming relationships with people and guiding them to reach their full potential. My leadership
philosophy developed over my professional career from research completed in leadership classes
and personal experiences with leaders. The foundation of my leadership philosophy is formed on the
principals of integrity, openness, and humility. Creating the right environment enables individuals to
tap into their own potential and move the organization to accomplishing the mission. Openness and
honesty eliminate communication barriers and allow for creative progress. Lack of humility can
create an unnecessary obstacle. Leaders who view themselves as superior to their employees often
inhibit productivity and ingenuity. The integrity of leaders is reflected in their decisions and in their

This Essay is to explain the Army Values and how they pertain to the mistake I made. In the US
army we are taught to live by the 7 army values. They are broken down to us in the acronym
'LDRSHIP'. Loyalty "Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. constitution, the Army, and other
soldiers." Duty "Fulfill your obligations." Respect "Treat people as they should be treated." Selfless
Service "Put the welfare of the nation, the Army and your subordinates above your own." Honor
"Live up to the army values." Integrity "Do what's right legally and morally." and Personal Courage

It requires you to be candid and sincere with your peers, subordinates, and superiors. Integrity calls
upon you to be honest and honorable in word and deed at all times. Integrity means doing the right
thing even if there is no one watching. To have integrity a person must have the ability to distinguish
the difference between right and wrong, so that when a controversial issue arises the right and
honorable thing will be done. It is an important role in the values because if one does not have
integrity they cannot be trusted on in a time of need or when you are working side by side with them
in every day work. What they say cannot be taken on word alone. I usually take my integrity very
seriously, and it makes me sick to think that I gave that up for something so stupid. We must have
integrity because if we don't we are untrustworthy and unreliable. These are 2 things I never want

Aristotle 's Doctrine Of The Mean Real Quick

Philosophical Perspectives

Zero to One–Hundred: Find the Mean Real Quick It is a simple exercise to find the mean between
two numbers, it is the midpoint between any two values on the number line. However, when you
drift away from the number system, calculating the mean of a set can be quite a different process. If
you consider fear and confidence, it is less intuitive that the mean of these two qualities is bravery.
And such, it even follows that there is no single variable that defines bravery. In Nicomachean
Ethics, Aristotle discusses one of his most famous principles in great detail, the 'Doctrine of the
Mean'. It declares that a moral (ethical) action is a mean between two extremes, and that a virtuous
person is capable of choosing the mean consistently.
Although the first example of means given above is arithmetic in nature, Aristotle's doctrine applies
to a much wider set. Ethical virtue, Aristotle asserts, is "a habit, disposed toward action by deliberate
choice, being at the mean relative to us, and defined by reason as a prudent man would define it"
(NE, Book 2, Chapter 7, Line 1107a). Being virtuous and acting virtuously differ markedly. One
must not only act virtuously, but also know he is acting virtuously, aim to do what he does for its
own sake, and act with certainty and decisiveness, to qualify as virtuous (NE, Book 2, Chapter 4,
Line 1105b). Acting virtuously, however, is the first step and primary

Euthyphro
Analysis of Euthyphro

Analysis of Euthyphro Socrates was put to death in Athens for subverting the youth of the city. He
was indicted by Meletus and awaiting his trail on the porch of the King of Archon when he met
Euthyphro. It was at this point he engaged in a debate about piety. In this paper, I will examine that
debate and present my own conclusion about its purpose as well as my own definition of piety.
Holiness, or piousness, is the center of the conversation between Socrates and Euthyphro. Both of
the men met on the porch of the King to deal with a legal matter; Socrates the defendant and
Euthyphro the plaintiff. Socrates was being charged with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The gods often disagreed in many old stories, so if one god held an act to be dear it was possible
another would hate it. This would make an act pious and impious, which is a contradiction. After his
above point was refuted, Euthyphro modified his point to read that holiness is what all the gods love
and the opposite was hated by all of them (Plato & Jowett). This definition is a bit harder to refute,
but it definitely falls short of giving a clear standard from which to judge all acts. This definition
fails to show the nature of piety. It says the gods love piety but it does not clearly explain why.
There has to be a reason that the gods love piety, and without that reason piety seems to become
relativist concept. I think this definition just gives a characteristic of piety. The next definition given
is that holiness is part of justice that is concentrated on by the gods (Plato & Jowett). Socrates uses
examples of people attending to lesser beings for the sake of improving them, and shows that this is
impossible with gods since they are beings above us. The word attending defeats this definition.
This leads to another unclear definition that suggests that people somehow improve the gods, which
we know from the concept of a god is impossible: holiness is that part of justice devoted to service
or ministration to the gods; it is learning how to please them with words or deeds (Plato & Jowett).

Negative Effects Of Egocentrism
We are a social species. We reproduce sexually and thus our relationships with those around us are
essential to our ability to succeed as an individual. With these ideas in mind, society has come to
denounce egocentrism and to view those who are prone to it as undesirable and incapable of
success. Egocentrism is defined in the Oxford dictionary as "Thinking only of oneself, without
regard for the feelings or desires of others." In the eyes of most, to think only of oneself is to be
parasitic to all others. To lack empathy is to be inherently indifferent which precedes
unsuccessfulness. Why is it then that there are so many stories of cruel billionaire businessman
mistreating their employees and loved ones? How can people that disregard the ... Show more

However, in my experience, for an egomaniac money, sex, and other transient pleasures are just as
good as long term relationships. Love and happiness are chemical cocktails. These chemicals
present themselves just as readily in fleeting relationships; commitment is unnecessary to their
appearance. More than that, a self–centered person, barring any mental illness, can choose whether
they behave egocentrically or benevolently in their relationships depending on what they find
advantageous. But, the instability of relationships among the egocentric can also be harmful to their
empathetic friends and romantic partners. This case is a bit more tricky, it can be somewhat difficult
to just choose to hate someone even if exposure to them is harmful. Is it really fair to let egotism go
unchecked if it destabilizes relationships and causes emotionally harmed to the less naturally
egotistical? Truthfully, one must manage their own relationships. If one experiences emotional
distress due to someone else's self–obsession it is his own fault for becoming involved with an
egomaniac. Egocentrism is inherently harmful to interpersonal relationships, but that is the problem
of the egomaniac and nobody

Aristotle and the Book of Nicomanchean Ethics
Aristotle and the Book of Nicomanchean Ethics
In Book I of Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle states that the ultimate human goal or end is happiness.
Aristotle then describes steps required for humans to obtain the ultimate happiness. He also states
that activity is an important requirement of happiness. A virtuous person takes pleasure in doing
virtuous things. He then goes on to say that living a life of virtue is something pleasurable in itself.
The role of virtue to Aristotle is an important one, with out it, it seems humans cannot obtain
happiness. Virtue is the connection one has to happiness and how they should obtain it. My goal in
this paper is to connect Aristotle's book of Nicomachean Ethics to my own reasoning of self–ethics.
I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aristotle believes happiness is the purpose of life because, a human, when giving reasons and
opinions to why they make the decisions between numerous choices, people will conclude to the
same ideas, which is whatever choice allows that person to achieve the most happiness. Aristotle
rightfully concludes that, the support of our decision making is that people will base their moral
decisions off the amount of happiness they receive compared to the trouble of performing the action.
The center of our decision–making must be a state of character within us, in this case, that weights
our delights against our burdens. Aristotle also states finding balance is key, but hard to obtain.
Anyone can become angered, gives or spends money, with the right motives, at the right time, the
right person, but it is not for everyone, and he says it is not easy. He says goodness is altruistically
hard to find. Thus, according to Aristotle, "It is difficult to live the virtuous life primarily because it
is often difficult to find the proper mean between the extremes." Voluntary and Involuntary actions.
As I reference Book III of Nichomachean Ethics, the terms 'voluntary' and 'involuntary' are used
with the indication to the moment of action. So, a voluntary action is one about which we have
power. Such as, what to eat throughout the day and night, taking a shower or brushing our teeth or
even life altering decisions

critically analyse and discuss the ethical, legal and professional implications that may arise when
dealing with patients and patient's family. The essay will especially focus on ethical principles,
statue law, duty of care and professional values under the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC,
2008) as well as the Code of Conduct and the importance of multi–disciplinary team (MDT)
working in health and social care settings. In the United Kingdom all nurses and Midwives are
governed by a professional body called Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). In order to protect
the patient confidentiality, in accordance to (NMC, 2008) the patient alone will be given the
pseudonym "Eve" throughout the case scenario. Eve an 80 year old woman has been admitted to
hospital due to a fractured hip in a mixed surgical ward. Post assessment, the team has come to a
conclusion that it would be best for Eve to have a hip replacement; the patient has been informed
and she opted for the procedure to take place. However, Eve has early signs of Alzheimer's disease.

Happiness and the Golden Mean
In the Declaration of Independence, it states that all men, being equal by nature, have the equal right
to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is interesting from Thomas Jefferson's point of view
that he says that we have the right to pursue happiness. When he said this, what did he mean in ways
of understanding it and pursing this happiness? To live, as we have experienced, is itself a means to
living well. The same applies to freedom. We cannot pursue happiness if we cannot freely carry out
the choices we make. "If everything is determined for us, if the pattern of our life is imposed upon
us, there would be no sense in talking about planning our lives or about adopting a plan for living
well." We need to stay and be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Meanwhile, if anything that is good for us is something that ought to be desired, then in reality we
ought to desire what is good for us. When we 'ought' to do anything, it comes with a notion of an
obligation or duty of some kind. This means that there is a responsibility to do what we ought to do.
By saying that we ought to pursue happiness puts us in a place to make an effort to live well and
find a way to make a good life for ourselves. In doing so, it means that we need the 'real goods' to
make a good life. That is why we have the right to the 'real goods.' If we did not have that freedom,
then it would mean that there was no obligation to even pursue happiness or a good life in which
Thomas Jefferson was referring to in having the right to pursue happiness. In having the same
human nature, Thomas Jefferson believed that all human beings had the same natural rights. It is the
idea that what is good for one is good for all. This led to adapting Aristotle's view on the pursuit of
happiness that all human beings are in pursuit of the same set of 'real goods' for themselves. Before
presenting what Aristotle means to obtain the 'real goods,' there needs to be an understanding of
what it means by "ought to pursue happiness." This can be explored through

The Country Club College– Inhibition of Eudaimonia Adding food coloring to drinking water will
not enhance its nutritional value. Also, an emphasis on enhancing the coloring, at the cost of clean
water, will degrade the function of water to provide nourishment. This same logic applies to
education. In articles written by the New York Times, Inside Higher Ed, and Brookings, colleges
across the country are spending increasing dollars on recreational facilities and administration than
on its academics. According to Aristotle, these actions will stifle the very purpose of education, to
create an informed citizenry, and degrade the quality of society. As a consequence, these

According to an NMBER paper, most college students placed more value on amenities and high
levels of consumption than instruction ("Consumption Amenities in Higher Education"). This
deliberate sacrifice of academia by students for the country club will only fuel the drive for excess
spending on pleasure to attract potential students. Scott Jaschik's article details this agenda. "The
Customer Is Always Right?" described the race for amenities as the consequence of student
spending choices. In a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, four–year colleges
searching for a way to attract a "majority of potential students" will invest in consumption
preferences. By spending more of the budget in amenities (student services and activities, athletics,
facilities), colleges would meet the high value students place on these categories. Since academic
support and instruction (libraries, museums, course costs) was only favored by students competing
for highly competitive institutions, the "vast majority" of four–year colleges would not increase
academic investment. The cost of appealing the masses would be degrading academic quality
("Many Students Opt for Colleges That Spend More on Nonacademic Functions, Study Finds |
Inside Higher Ed"). The metamorphosis of academic institutions to amenity centers affects both the
students and society as a whole. According to Aristotle, proper education leads to the formation of
well ruling leaders which help the

American soldiers are ethical warriors. Military ethics and warrior ethos constitute the two
fundaments of the Army's Code of Honor. One cannot be separated from the other. This obligation
has applied for ages to those who held power: "science without conscience is but the ruin of the
soul," as wrote Rabelais in the early seventeenth century. More than ever, soldiers need ethic
references to guide their actions and prevail, especially in a Counter–insurgency environment where
excessive use of force jeopardizes mission accomplishment. Whatever the situation might be,
soldiers must be able to use their science of war with restraint, discernment, and ethics. Recent bad
experiences proved that the Army should advocate this ethical military obligation with humility and
determination. The Brigade will advocate its commitment to the Army's core values by focusing on
Honor, Personal Courage, and Duty because these three values summarize what an ethical warrior
must be. The other Army's values remain important but focusing on three will bring clarity and
simplicity. Honor is a "code of personal integrity." This code ties the Army to the Nation. It is of
course the soldiers' honor to risk their lives to defend the nation. But it is also their honor to fight in
accordance with American values. The US Army's ethical warriors fight their enemies with
determination, but respect. Acts of crime, misconduct, and ethical breaches

7 Great Virtues

7 Great Virtues
– Ben Franklin –
The first virtue Ben Franklin wanted was "An Aversion to Tyranny". The main idea of this to Ben is
that he doesn't like tyranny, which is power or control of one person. He didn't like to be told what
to do to and he also liked some control and therefore, have a limited government. Ben didn't want
any dictatorship either, which meant no kings or queens. Franklin realized that he didn't like the idea
of tyranny when he was 12 years old. He became an apprentice at the print shop of his older brother,
James, who tended to be a tougher boss. I think that Aversion to Tyranny definitely still exists in
America today. We still do not have any dictatorship in today's ... Show more content on

The fifth virtue Ben Franklin put on the list of America's virtues was "Idealism in Foreign Policy".
Franklin once wrote, "The influence of every power is measured by the opinion one has of its
intrinsic force." When he went to Paris as an envoy during the Revolution, Franklin proved himself
a master of the diplomatic doctrine of realism by playing an adroit balance–of–power game between
France, Spain, the Netherlands, and later on, Britain. The main idea of this virtue, as I see it, is that
Franklin basically tried to portray each country's position as desirable to him. In a way, this virtue
still exists in America today. The only thing I can think of for this virtue in today's world is Iraq.
Even though it isn't ideal to be at war with a country, we do our best to fight against them and
eventually hopefully end the war and win it. The sixth virtue Ben Franklin wanted was
"Compromise". Franklin used the phrase, "Both sides must part with some of their demands," many
times. He used it the most when the Constitutional Convention was deciding on the issue of whether
the new Congress should be proportioned by population or have equal votes for each state. For
Franklin, who personally believed in proportional representation, compromise was not only a
practical approach but also a moral one. He believed that

Past and Present of Civil Relations
Civic Relations: Past and Present
Introduction
In his book, Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle presents five main components that encapsulate civic
relationships: happiness, virtues, deliberation, justice and friendship. Aristotle introduces the
concept of utilitarianism, which is key to the thoughts and ideas he portrays in Nicomachean Ethics
because according to him, one must do whatever will bring the individual the greatest good. As
human beings, we must focus on the good purpose–– on the end product of what we set our minds
to. This is where the five components of civic relationships come in; each one plays a key role in
order to solve this equation of seeking the greatest good. In this case, we will analyze, compare and
contrast exactly what the greatest good in civic relationships consists of and see in what ways
Aristotle's ideas are similar and different to the perceptions of successful, present day workplaces in
the United States according to Great Place to Work Institute.
Deliberation
Aristotle discusses the importance of deliberation in ethics and civic relationships. Deliberation is
key in order for society to decide what is right and wrong, good and bad. The ideas and opinions of

Epistemic Virtue And The Ecological Crisis Summary
In Byron Williston's essay, "Epistemic Virtue and the Ecological Crisis", Williston examines Joel
Kovel's ideas on what it takes to get ahead in a capitalist society: "To succeed in the marketplace
and to rise to the top, one needs a hard, cold, calculating mentality... None of these traits are at all
correlated with ecological sensibility or caring" (Kovel, quoted in Williston, p. 250;252). Kovel's
ideal person is one that is always looking for deeds that are self–serving. Kovel is implying that to
be successful in life, one must put morals as an afterthought in order to move ahead in this
capitalistic society. I disagree with Kovel statement, based on how Kovel's claims on how to be
successful is not true for all professions. Furthermore, I disagree with Kovel's statements that if
someone is successful, they cannot be environmentally sensitive, or possess the trait of being caring
by looking at the cases of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. When Kovel states to
rise to the top, one needs to have a calculating mentality, this may be true for some people, but not
all. Kovel is picturing the stereotype of the 'businessman', one who puts their career over being
emotionally caring and environmentally friendly. Yet someone's career ... Show more content on

This leads me to conclude that Kovel believes that one must choose between being successful or
being environmentally friendly and caring. When looking at the example of Brad Pitt and Angelina
Jolie, both high paying actors and supporters of the environment, they are the parents' to six children
(Roberts 2018). One would consider the raising of a child, shows that they contain the caring
personality trait. Therefore, Jolie and Pitt can be successful in their fields, sensitive about the
environment, and are still caring people, as they are parents. This goes against Kovel's idea of what
type of people Pitt and Jolie should

The Effect of Biased Conceptions Being Forced Onto Individuals Within Society; Represented in
Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet (1996) Romeo and Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann effectively
teaches the audience about morality and social acceptance, through the use of camera work,
soundscape and mise–en–scene. These three techniques work together to emphasize this teaching by
collaborating and synchronising with one another. Romeo and Juliet is in the drama and romance
genre , and the severity of the character's actions clearly makes the film unique and distinctive. This
film effectively communicates and teaches us that society often forces biased conceptions onto
individuals, through the use of the three named techniques. In one of the introductory scenes of the
film, Baz Luhrmann introduces the meeting of Romeo and Juliet at the Capulet's ball. Luhrmann
does this by using a range of camera shots that help illustrate the romance and whimsicality of these
scenes. Camera framing is an effective technique Luhrmann uses in this film; to communicate the
concept that society does not want individuals to have their own opinions and beliefs. Two shots that
are significant include a close up shot that vacillates between Romeo and Juliet. The duration of
each shot is just long enough to portray the romance and whimsicality of the scene. This is framed in
such a way that shows their innocence and naïveté. This is followed by a mid–shot of Romeo
pursuing Juliet at her mansion. The

Civilian Job Specifications And The Army
Civilian Job Specifications and the Army Leadership Attributes Civilian Organizations and the
Army as an Organization Phillip Pandy University of Texas at El Paso Abstract The Army is one of
the largest organizations in the world. The Army is global; the Army is technologically advanced
and maintains its own infrastructure. What allows the Army to be the modern day force that it is
today? The Army has values, and expects results from its soldiers. This culture has created
employees that lead the sons and daughters of our nation. Civilian Job Specifications and the Army
Leadership Attributes Job specifications simply put are knowledge, skills, abilities and other
characteristics (KSAOs) that a potential employee must have in order to fill his/her position at a
level sufficient with that of the employers expectations. The Army when viewed as an organization
requires its employees; employees being its Soldiers, to uphold a certain level of ethical behavior as
well as project a professional image. This ethical behavior is combined with a number of attributes
that reflect an individual's performance and upward mobility. These Attributes are grouped into six
categories; Character, Presence, Intellect, Leading, Developing and Achieving. The traits that are
placed into these categories range from one's ability to have confidence all the way down to how
prompt one may be when obtaining results. The professional image eluded to earlier is measured

A Few Good Men By Erich Fromm And Stanley Milgram
The movie, A Few Good Men, is the story of how two marines go on trial for the murder of another
marine. The movie then unfolds into an emotional drama which dives deep into conspiracy and the
psychodynamics of following orders. A Few Good Men was a critically acclaimed movie and was
nominated for multiple Academy Awards. Similarly, authors Erich Fromm and Stanley Milgram,
wrote essays that explored the morals behind obedience, and how disobedience of immoral
commands can bring betterment to others. Although A Few Good Men presents disobedience as
being a vice, evidence from Milgram and Fromm suggest that disobedience can bring about an
improvement on current conditions. In A Few Good Men, both Lance Cpl. Harold W. Dawson and
Pfc. Louden Downey were obedient to Col. Nathan R. Jessup's order to give Santiago the Code Red,
even though it went against their preset morals. Dawson saw, through his own conscience, that
hurting another person because of small mistakes was immoral. But because of his believe in the
marines code, "Unit, Corp, God, Country," he was unable to allow himself to disobey a direct order.
Author Milgram explored this same issue in his experiment. He asked why people followed orders
no matter the negative effects it has on other people. In the study, roughly 60% of the test subject
followed all orders to harms others. After the studies, Milgram inferred that this was because people
have an underlying fear of disobeying a superior and do not trust their own

The Importance Of Cell Phones In The College Classroom
Unfortunately, cell phones have become one of the biggest challenges instructors face in college
classrooms as these devices have become a pervasive part of young people's lives. What used to
only make phone calls and send text messages, now does our emailing, sends us Facebook and
Snapchat notifications, and plays music. Additionally, our cell phones are not only used for personal
activities, but for school and work life. We want to be reachable in case of an emergency, but the
constant stream of notifications has led our productivity to significantly tumble down. Recently, I
noticed that in many of my classes, even though the professor says there is a "no phone" policy,
many students are scrolling through their social media feeds or responding to a text rather than
paying attention to the lecture of the day. I admit to using my phone constantly during class, which
often has led my grades to suffer poorly. Rather than paying attention to the lesson, I was checking
on buzzing notifications of entertainment news and random trivia. Because I was not listening to my
professor earlier in the day, I had a difficult time trying to complete the homework assignment.
Thus, in an attempt to be epistemic temperate, for the last two days, I tried to not use my phone
during class lectures and study time to measure my productivity. During my first lecture, it was quite
difficult to not constantly check my phone and see what was going on social media. At one point in

Leadership At The Start Of This Semester
At the start of this semester, I had a very narrow understanding on what leadership was and what
leadership could do. I was always under the impression that leaders were cultivated through a series
of trials and tribulations where this single individual's vision was faced with extreme difficulties.
Through this course, I have learned leaders are, in fact, created, but not through the narrow lens I
always saw with. Leaders can be created through the need for leadership, by cultivating leadership
traits in individuals, and even from the spontaneity of challenging situations. Our scope of learning
leadership was expansive this semester: we first identified the definition of leadership having to
include leaders, followers, and the situation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leadership requires followers. Followership is the ability to align one's objectives with the
objectives of the leader and actively participating in making the leader's vision come true. Dr. Prince
and Robert Kelley taught us that even followers are dynamic and can act differently depending on
what kind of follower they are. This concept of different types of followers is extremely important
because leaders need to be able to adapt their strategy in dealing with followers. For instance, a
leader will work with an exemplary follower differently than a leader would work with a pragmatic
follower. The exemplary follower embodies everything a leader would want in a follower and trusts
these followers to actively pursue success for the vision. A leader would not have to check in and
intrinsically motivate these individuals; however, for pragmatic followers, it is the duty of the leader
to let pragmatic followers know they can take risks for the betterment of the vision. Another key
characteristic of leadership that I believe has to be constant through leaders and followers is the act
of being ethical. As we have learned in class, ethics does not have a tangible definition because it
varies between people and organization. Dr. Prince provided us the best framework to view ethics:
virtues. Virtues are universal; we can see virtues exist through different kinds of people, different
civilizations, and different organizations. For instance, many virtues exist in

How Should One Live
How should one live? This question has troubled philosophers for millennia, with many attempts to
definitively answer this. This essay sets out to explore two of these perspectives; Aristotelian virtue
ethics and Kantian duty ethics. Moral philosophy is to depict the absolute ideal (Sullivan, 1980),
Aristotelian virtue ethics argues that a virtuous eudemonic life constitutes a moral one. Kant differs;
morality is rational and the categorical imperative it to be abided by to live as such.
Aristotle is the main proponent in the field of virtue ethics, culminating in the seminal work on the
Subject; Nicomachean Ethics (NE). NE recognises a life well lived is a virtuous one, Eudemonia
be–came the ultimate goal. Eudemonia is the culmination of an entire life lived well, in the pursuit
of virtue and excellence (Taylor, 1955).
Aristotle viewed ethics as a practical pursuit, the ends to the means is to achieve Eudemonia and not
to possess the knowledge without action. As stated in NE; we are inquiring not in order to know
what virtue is, but in order to become good, since otherwise our inquiry would have been of no use
(Aristotle, 1996, p34, 1103b8–1104a4 Book Two, ii). Thus morality is a state produced by
habitation; by doing "right" acts we then acquire the right moral character, are not born in a state of
good moral character (Taylor, 1955). Virtues are attained by exercising them; virtues we get by first
exercising them...For the things we have to learn before we can do them,

Ancient Philosophy
Plato's early dialogues are referred to as the Socratic dialogues. During these dialogues
there is nothing to suggest that the search for virtue and the human good goes beyond
the natural realm. In the early dialogues the good and proper things are found through
questioning. This however, changes in Plato's middle dialogues. In his middle dialogues
Plato leads us to the theory of knowledge. A shift toward the metaphysical guided by
the first recognition of the Forms, that is, the true nature of all things. He claims Morals
must be based on an appropriate political structure that can be upheld by leaders with
strict scientific training. The theory of the Forms is not restricted to human principles; it

of reality. Philosophers are the ones who have freed themselves from their shackles. Not
only have they acknowledged the existence of the puppeteers, but they have ventured out

Plato wants the reader to understand that the real or the perfected state does not
exist in this world; however we access the immaterial though our own intangible souls.
For Plato the true form of everything is perfect and therefore intangible and outside of
time, so too is the immaterial human soul. In this same vein Philosophy, which to Plato is

that in accessing the perfected forms through the immortal soul we build up knowledge
that we will retain in our transcended immortal state; when we exist together with the

the face value. Now as I'm faced with the opportunity of becoming a student professional in a

I will need to recognize these mistakes, own up to them and then find effective measures to correct

continues with confidentiality in peer, and therapy circles. During clinicals, patient confidentiality is
a core concept attached to treatment. I will respect and understand that the patient can divulge some
private/personal (other word here) information to me and I must respectfully keep that close to my
chest. The same goes for peer circles. If a colleague tells me something personal then it is my
professional responsibility to not tell anyone (other phrase here). I understand that I will make
mistakes but whether I am wrong or right, I will need to back up my claims with scholarly and peer–

value: excellence. Citing my claims with scholarly and peer–reviewed articles for decisions made on
a patient's therapy mode during clinicals or in the academic environment when asked to talk about
new therapeutic treatments for total knee replacements is of utmost importance. Without backing,
my words become theories without merit and no patient wants to know that their therapy is based on

I think disrespect is one of the biggest issues in the united states military. Respect is something
everyone wants, not many have, and few want to give. Unfortunately, respect is not something that
is given all the time. Maybe this is because respect is not clearly understood. What is respect? The
Webster's Dictionary defines it as an act of giving particular attention or high or special regard.
Another definition shows respect as a feeling or attitude of admiration and deference toward
somebody or something. And disrespect is defined as the lack of respect. This does not explain
completely what it is, but at least it gives us an idea about what it may be. As a matter of fact, there

Jonas remembers the memory that the Giver gave to him about the boy dying, and he "saw again the

Ethics in Sports Essay
Ethics in Sports
My name is john doe and I am the sports and recreation advisor for Stevenage. I am writing to every
head of PE to express my feelings and opinions towards ethics and values in schools.
My personal view of values in sport is that it comes down to the player's beliefs in the sport and the
standard he or she sets. For example whether a team member puts in 100% effort in the sport they
are playing.
I define ethics in sport as the moral rules, principles and values, perhaps more simply put, practicing
the following core values to sport
· Fairness
· Respect
· Equity
An example of good ethics is players knowing the rules of a game and following them.
Sport is an important part of life; it can bring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Players should play fair and in theory be able to refreree there own matches. Players should respect
the decisions made by their officials and abide by them, this shows good sportsmanship. Players
should also have knowledge of the game, for example they should know the free kick rule if they are
playing football. Fair play can be defined as the upholding of fairness before, during and after, and
directly relating to a game, match or event. You should always inform players of the consequences
that will occur if they do not play fair or cheat. Cheating in sport should never be tolerated because
it ruins the game for every one. Fair play can often be best promoted through a code of conduct that
clearly defines the rules of the games and the do's and don'ts.
Equality in sport is the practice of fairness and the upholding of the rules also to ensure that all
individuals are respected and have
equal opportunities regardless of their sex, gender, religion, sexuality or ethnic background. It is
important for all those involved in sport to support and promote the principles of equity, whether
they are playing, refereeing or coaching. I think that it is so important that when incidents of
negative discrimination occur they are dealt with promptly. If equality is not tolerated it will cause a
better learning and teaching atmosphere.
Racism can be best described as negative discrimination against an individual because of their

Three Features of an Ideal Ruler Contrasted in The Aenied...
An ideal ruler possesses 3 distinct features: courage, honor, and virtue. Courage is often shown
when facing difficult leadership decisions. Honor is gained as one honor's the gods or serves one's
own state. And virtue is gained as one looks out for the best interest of one's own state. The
importance of such virtues is contrasted in Antigone and The Aenied. In Antigone, Creon shows the
3 components of a good leader when he takes rule and objectively enforces the laws to maintain
order. But as Antigone progresses and Creon's hubris becomes more prominent, he loses sight of the
three qualities that make a good leader. However, unlike Creon, Aeneas starts as the ideal leader by

Therefore, Creon is able to show the city what mortal laws are meant for–to keep order.
Creon loves Athens, and displays his loyalty by serving as king and attempting to honor the city's
gods by punishing a traitor. Though Creon's actions have good intentions behind them, his view
begins to illustrate his self pride. After being informed that Polynices was buried, the Chorus tells
Creon, Creon gains honor here from his belief that the gods don't honor traitors. Though Creon is
obviously wrong, he shows some honor because in this situation Creon is simply trying to do what
he believes is best for the city. Creon's honor stems from his want to carry out laws consistently.
However, Creon's claim that gods don't honor traitors shows his circular logic. For who is to
determine a criminal in Thebes? Because Creon is the ruler of the kingdom, Creon has the ability to
judge of who is a criminal and who is not. And so in this sense, Creon reserves the right to himself
and himself only. Thus leading Creon to believe he is more powerful, implicitly taking his position
to that of more than just a king. Creon's reveals an attitude of manly pride which ultimately proves
to be his downfall.
As the state calls Creon to rise to kingship, Creon jumps into leadership and immediately attempts to
protect the state, thus displaying some very important leadership qualities. But as Creon's arrogance

We become like those with whom we spend our time with. So friendship is a virtuous activity that
requires proximity and consistent engagement. Long–distance relationships where people are rarely
engaged in their friendship are not friendships for Aristotle.
Aristotle says that having too many friends is an obstacle to the good life. His reasoning is easy to
see: if we are influenced by those whom we spend our time with, the smaller the group the more
focused the influence. The right number of friends should be the number that a person could live
with and divide oneself up among. His reasoning for this advice is that one's friends should be
friends of one another if they are all going to spend their days in each other's company but he says
this would be an arduous task to accomplish with a large number of people. Aristotle could not have
for seen the accumulation of over a thousand friends connected to a larger network of more than
three million people and accessible on a single web page. Is accessing a person's profile engaging in
friendship? Have social networks given us friendship or are they an obstacle to the good life?
Aristotle points out that there is a difference between casual friendship and intimate friendship.
Casual friendships are acquaintances that are characterized by familiarity. These are necessary in a
society but when a person engages in this kind of friendship

Plato
In Plato's Apology, Socrates believes that to be good, you should strive to find out why and how
things are the way they are. When his childhood friend visited an oracle and asked if anyone was
wiser than Socrates, the oracle said there wasn't. In doing this, he demonstrates that you should not
just accept what you see or hear at face value, rather, you should investigate further to understand
why. It does you no good to not be able to explain it. If you cannot explain it, you could say that you
might not even know it at all.
So he went around and talked to many politicians and craftsmen who were supposedly wise (the
definition of wise used here being something along the lines of "knowing a lot of stuff"), but after
speaking with them, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another difference is that Plato believes that the best type of good is one that is desirable both in
itself and for the sake of its results, while Aristotle says that if X is desired because it brings you to
Y, then Y is ultimately better than X. Therefore, the highest good is one that isn't desirable because it
leads to anything else, but instead is good in its own right.
So essentially, Aristotle believes that to be a good/virtuous person, you must strive to work towards
being better at whatever you do, getting better by experience, and the closer you get to being
amazing at whatever it is, the closer you'll be to achieving the thing that the first thing you did led
to, and so on and so forth until you (ideally) meet the good that is called good just because it is
good. You can still be considered a good/virtuous person just by being on the path to "goodness",
simply because you are in the process of making habits out of the good things you are doing for the
right reasons. Plato believes that to be a good person, you must always try to gain knowledge
through arguments and reason, and only when you know a good deal about something, can you
begin your journey towards the

Machiavelli Plato Rebuplic Prince Comparison
Haþim Cihan Demirköprülü, 20303433
Essay Question: Compare the Characteristics of the true guardians, as described by Plato (Republic,
bk VII, pp.158 – 61, 484b – 487e) with the characteristics of the rulers, as described
by Machiavelli (The Prince, ch.15, pp. 47 – 49 and ch. 18, pp.54f). What is the most
important difference between the two accounts? In your view, which account is better, and why? For
centuries, every ruler created their own principles and rules and somehow they ruled millions of
people and controlled their future. In this essay, I will try to compare the characteristics of two types
of ruler, one is Plato’s true guardian where he mentions in the Republic and the other one,
Niccoló ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, a true guardian, who searches for justice and wisdom in his all time an all life,
couldn’t be afraid of death which overshadows his path to the justice. Rulers need to stand
bravely, in order to find goodness. So that, Plato definitely rejects cowardice and slavishness, where
he signifies that “then it seems a cowardly and slavish nature will take no part in the
philosophy” [Republic, p.160, 486a – b]. Shortly , Plato says that, a ruler, should be
naturally “good at remembering, quick to learn, high minded, graceful, and a friend and
relative of truth, justice, courage, and moderation” [Republic, p.161, 487a]. These
characteristics truly show the idealistic position of Plato. He tries to create a perfect ruler for his
utopian world kallipolis.
But, not surprisingly, Machiavelli is against this imaginary ruler. Although it would be marvelous if
a ruler have all these good qualities, he believes that a ruler who has all of these good characteristics
cannot exist in practice [Selected Political Writings, The Prince ch. 15, p.48]. For him this image is
suitable only for an ideal world. Unlike Plato, Machiavelli highlights that in practical reality, for a
ruler, who wants to hold on to power, it is necessary to learn how not to be good. Misery, cruelty,
duplicity, irreligion or untrustworthiness are evil qualities, for

Personal Ethics Paper

  • 1. Personal Ethics Paper Personal Ethics Statement According to Guido, ethics is the branch of philosophy concerned with the evaluation of human action. A broader definition would be that ethics involves the principles or assumptions underpinning the way individuals or groups ought to conduct themselves. In today's continuous changing world, the one thing that remains constant for most of us is our personal value system of beliefs, known as ethics. Ethics can also be referred to as morals. Therefore, ethics are those morals that reflect and indicate issues that concern behaviors that are right or wrong and the good and bad habits of individual character. In earning these rewards one can appreciate hard work and know the value of hard work. Another important value taught to me as child is to be willing to share with others and that there is joy and fulfillment in sharing and an appreciation for what you have and not to covet things your neighbors have. I had to learn to appreciate what I had and show that appreciation and that has carried over into my adult life wherein I appreciate gifts and people and I am very thankful for those in my life. Ethics And The Enhanced Interrogation Techniques ETHICS AND THE ENHANCED INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES Introduction The military and the government security organs normally apply numerous methods in obtaining critical information about criminal activities. Some of these techniques are considered acceptable by the human rights and other non–governmental organizations while others are considered as violating the human rights as stated by the constitution of major countries and states. There has been a strong debate on the use of these techniques and many have defined them as torture. This paper considers the application of enhanced interrogation techniques and establishes the ethicality and necessity of applying them in the fight against terror to obtain vital information. The ethicality is discussed with reflection to the five frameworks of ethics. While the law itself condemns use of torture for any purpose, torture becomes necessary to be used in particular critical instances. According to Miles, the United States senate allowed the use of enhanced interrogation techniques on a number of cases and detainees. The human rights should be considered first in any event whether in interrogation or any other course of action1. The policy makers have found themselves between hard and difficult decisions to make on the techniques for obtaining vital information from terrorists who are trained heavily on resisting from giving information when caught in the wrong side of the law. Different people have different way of thinking on this issue. Some consider friends to be more influential on the young adult while others have totally opposite views about it. But according to my view and experience, young adults are more highly influenced by their friends rather than their parents. As we know that, parents are our first teachers and teach us all the fundamental social roles. They teach us how react at every situation of life for example how to respect and behave with relatives and strangers. They are the one who teach us how to talk and make new friends. Parents spend more time with their children. Since children don't have enough experience and skills in both personal and social life, they mostly prefer parent to provide them most of the information regarding to the matter. But despite off all the hard work of parents in teaching the ethic and moral lesson, we youngster follow more of our friends than parents. Parent spend their whole life in polishing the behaviors of their children but the influence of good or bad friends can change the personality of a person totally in a very instant moment. They are many examples and reason behind why youngsters are easily influenced by friends. First of all, young adult are more mature today than previous years. • 7. Traits Differentiating Scholars from Normal Students According to the Oxford dictionary, a scholar is those who specialises in a particular branch of study, especially the humanities. If the word is to be further defined, in archaic terms it means a student or pupil. In an institute, there would be students and scholars. However, most scholars are students too. What are the traits that distinguishes them from normal students? This will be further explained below. First and foremost, the most common trait a scholar needs to have is humility. This trait is most commonly known to be defined as the quality of having a modest or low view of one's importance. Therefore, a scholar should always view himself as an equal towards others and never as a superior, which will lead to negative values such as arrogance and egoism. In my opinion this trait is what led many scholars to succeed, as they would always be humble of their actions, which in result they would be well respected and looked upon. Thus humility is a trait that must be present in a good scholar. In relation to the trait 'humility', another noticeable trait of a scholar is integrity. This trait is defined as the attachment to moral and virtuous principles, such as honestly. As a result, this trait would be present in everyone, however, not everyone practices this. For example, an honest person would be trusted more than a person who repeatedly lies. This would show that the scholar would uphold the value of integrity. Therefore a good scholar must possess this trait to earn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A clear leadership philosophy is important to the success of a leader, development of the leader's employees, and growth of the organization. As a future leader, I will explore my own leadership philosophy built on the principles of integrity, openness, and humility. I will discuss the importance of creating an environment that fosters mutual respect, recognizes each individual's potential, and inspires success. Using my own philosophy as a guide, I will discuss and analyze the approach a commander takes in managing her most challenging leadership issue and will compare and contrast her actions with my own leadership philosophy. My leadership philosophy is as follows: Leadership is forming relationships with people and guiding them to reach their full potential. My leadership philosophy developed over my professional career from research completed in leadership classes and personal experiences with leaders. The foundation of my leadership philosophy is formed on the principals of integrity, openness, and humility. Creating the right environment enables individuals to tap into their own potential and move the organization to accomplishing the mission. Openness and honesty eliminate communication barriers and allow for creative progress. Lack of humility can create an unnecessary obstacle. Leaders who view themselves as superior to their employees often inhibit productivity and ingenuity. The integrity of leaders is reflected in their decisions and in their ... They are broken down to us in the acronym 'LDRSHIP'. Loyalty "Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. constitution, the Army, and other soldiers." Duty "Fulfill your obligations." Respect "Treat people as they should be treated." Selfless Service "Put the welfare of the nation, the Army and your subordinates above your own." Honor "Live up to the army values." Integrity calls upon you to be honest and honorable in word and deed at all times. Integrity means doing the right thing even if there is no one watching. To have integrity a person must have the ability to distinguish the difference between right and wrong, so that when a controversial issue arises the right and honorable thing will be done. It is an important role in the values because if one does not have integrity they cannot be trusted on in a time of need or when you are working side by side with them in every day work. • 13. Aristotle 's Doctrine Of The Mean Real Quick Jonathan Abrams Alptekin Sanli Philosophical Perspectives 8 December 2014 Zero to One–Hundred: Find the Mean Real Quick It is a simple exercise to find the mean between two numbers, it is the midpoint between any two values on the number line. However, when you drift away from the number system, calculating the mean of a set can be quite a different process. If you consider fear and confidence, it is less intuitive that the mean of these two qualities is bravery. And such, it even follows that there is no single variable that defines bravery. In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle discusses one of his most famous principles in great detail, the 'Doctrine of the Mean'. It declares that a moral (ethical) action is a mean between two extremes, and that a virtuous person is capable of choosing the mean consistently. Although the first example of means given above is arithmetic in nature, Aristotle's doctrine applies to a much wider set. Ethical virtue, Aristotle asserts, is "a habit, disposed toward action by deliberate choice, being at the mean relative to us, and defined by reason as a prudent man would define it" (NE, Book 2, Chapter 7, Line 1107a). Being virtuous and acting virtuously differ markedly. One must not only act virtuously, but also know he is acting virtuously, aim to do what he does for its own sake, and act with certainty and decisiveness, to qualify as virtuous (NE, Book 2, Chapter 4, Line 1105b). Acting virtuously, however, is the first step and primary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Euthyphro Analysis of Euthyphro Nikon121 PHI 200 Bob Harris October 15, 2012 Analysis of Euthyphro Socrates was put to death in Athens for subverting the youth of the city. He was indicted by Meletus and awaiting his trail on the porch of the King of Archon when he met Euthyphro. It was at this point he engaged in a debate about piety. In this paper, I will examine that debate and present my own conclusion about its purpose as well as my own definition of piety. Holiness, or piousness, is the center of the conversation between Socrates and Euthyphro. Both of the men met on the porch of the King to deal with a legal matter; Socrates the defendant and Euthyphro the plaintiff. Socrates was being charged with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The gods often disagreed in many old stories, so if one god held an act to be dear it was possible another would hate it. This would make an act pious and impious, which is a contradiction. After his above point was refuted, Euthyphro modified his point to read that holiness is what all the gods love and the opposite was hated by all of them (Plato & Jowett). This definition is a bit harder to refute, but it definitely falls short of giving a clear standard from which to judge all acts. This definition fails to show the nature of piety. It says the gods love piety but it does not clearly explain why. There has to be a reason that the gods love piety, and without that reason piety seems to become relativist concept. I think this definition just gives a characteristic of piety. The next definition given is that holiness is part of justice that is concentrated on by the gods (Plato & Jowett). Socrates uses examples of people attending to lesser beings for the sake of improving them, and shows that this is impossible with gods since they are beings above us. The word attending defeats this definition. This leads to another unclear definition that suggests that people somehow improve the gods, which we know from the concept of a god is impossible: holiness is that part of justice devoted to service or ministration to the gods; it is learning how to please them with words or deeds (Plato & Jowett). • 17. Negative Effects Of Egocentrism We are a social species. We reproduce sexually and thus our relationships with those around us are essential to our ability to succeed as an individual. With these ideas in mind, society has come to denounce egocentrism and to view those who are prone to it as undesirable and incapable of success. Egocentrism is defined in the Oxford dictionary as "Thinking only of oneself, without regard for the feelings or desires of others." In the eyes of most, to think only of oneself is to be parasitic to all others. To lack empathy is to be inherently indifferent which precedes unsuccessfulness. Why is it then that there are so many stories of cruel billionaire businessman mistreating their employees and loved ones? How can people that disregard the ... Love and happiness are chemical cocktails. These chemicals present themselves just as readily in fleeting relationships; commitment is unnecessary to their appearance. More than that, a self–centered person, barring any mental illness, can choose whether they behave egocentrically or benevolently in their relationships depending on what they find advantageous. But, the instability of relationships among the egocentric can also be harmful to their empathetic friends and romantic partners. This case is a bit more tricky, it can be somewhat difficult to just choose to hate someone even if exposure to them is harmful. Is it really fair to let egotism go unchecked if it destabilizes relationships and causes emotionally harmed to the less naturally egotistical? Truthfully, one must manage their own relationships. If one experiences emotional distress due to someone else's self–obsession it is his own fault for becoming involved with an egomaniac. Aristotle then describes steps required for humans to obtain the ultimate happiness. He also states that activity is an important requirement of happiness. A virtuous person takes pleasure in doing virtuous things. He then goes on to say that living a life of virtue is something pleasurable in itself. The role of virtue to Aristotle is an important one, with out it, it seems humans cannot obtain happiness. Virtue is the connection one has to happiness and how they should obtain it. My goal in this paper is to connect Aristotle's book of Nicomachean Ethics to my own reasoning of self–ethics. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aristotle believes happiness is the purpose of life because, a human, when giving reasons and opinions to why they make the decisions between numerous choices, people will conclude to the same ideas, which is whatever choice allows that person to achieve the most happiness. Aristotle rightfully concludes that, the support of our decision making is that people will base their moral decisions off the amount of happiness they receive compared to the trouble of performing the action. The center of our decision–making must be a state of character within us, in this case, that weights our delights against our burdens. Aristotle also states finding balance is key, but hard to obtain. Anyone can become angered, gives or spends money, with the right motives, at the right time, the right person, but it is not for everyone, and he says it is not easy. He says goodness is altruistically hard to find. Thus, according to Aristotle, "It is difficult to live the virtuous life primarily because it is often difficult to find the proper mean between the extremes." Voluntary and Involuntary actions. As I reference Book III of Nichomachean Ethics, the terms 'voluntary' and 'involuntary' are used with the indication to the moment of action. So, a voluntary action is one about which we have power. It is interesting from Thomas Jefferson's point of view that he says that we have the right to pursue happiness. When he said this, what did he mean in ways of understanding it and pursing this happiness? To live, as we have experienced, is itself a means to living well. The same applies to freedom. We cannot pursue happiness if we cannot freely carry out the choices we make. Meanwhile, if anything that is good for us is something that ought to be desired, then in reality we ought to desire what is good for us. When we 'ought' to do anything, it comes with a notion of an obligation or duty of some kind. This means that there is a responsibility to do what we ought to do. By saying that we ought to pursue happiness puts us in a place to make an effort to live well and find a way to make a good life for ourselves. In doing so, it means that we need the 'real goods' to make a good life. That is why we have the right to the 'real goods.' If we did not have that freedom, then it would mean that there was no obligation to even pursue happiness or a good life in which Thomas Jefferson was referring to in having the right to pursue happiness. In having the same human nature, Thomas Jefferson believed that all human beings had the same natural rights. It is the idea that what is good for one is good for all. This led to adapting Aristotle's view on the pursuit of happiness that all human beings are in pursuit of the same set of 'real goods' for themselves. In articles written by the New York Times, Inside Higher Ed, and Brookings, colleges across the country are spending increasing dollars on recreational facilities and administration than on its academics. According to an NMBER paper, most college students placed more value on amenities and high levels of consumption than instruction ("Consumption Amenities in Higher Education"). This deliberate sacrifice of academia by students for the country club will only fuel the drive for excess spending on pleasure to attract potential students. Scott Jaschik's article details this agenda. "The Customer Is Always Right?" described the race for amenities as the consequence of student spending choices. In a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, four–year colleges searching for a way to attract a "majority of potential students" will invest in consumption preferences. By spending more of the budget in amenities (student services and activities, athletics, facilities), colleges would meet the high value students place on these categories. Since academic support and instruction (libraries, museums, course costs) was only favored by students competing for highly competitive institutions, the "vast majority" of four–year colleges would not increase academic investment. The cost of appealing the masses would be degrading academic quality ("Many Students Opt for Colleges That Spend More on Nonacademic Functions, Study Finds | Inside Higher Ed"). Military ethics and warrior ethos constitute the two fundaments of the Army's Code of Honor. One cannot be separated from the other. This obligation has applied for ages to those who held power: "science without conscience is but the ruin of the soul," as wrote Rabelais in the early seventeenth century. More than ever, soldiers need ethic references to guide their actions and prevail, especially in a Counter–insurgency environment where excessive use of force jeopardizes mission accomplishment. Whatever the situation might be, soldiers must be able to use their science of war with restraint, discernment, and ethics. Recent bad experiences proved that the Army should advocate this ethical military obligation with humility and determination. The Brigade will advocate its commitment to the Army's core values by focusing on Honor, Personal Courage, and Duty because these three values summarize what an ethical warrior must be. The other Army's values remain important but focusing on three will bring clarity and simplicity. Honor is a "code of personal integrity." This code ties the Army to the Nation. He didn't like to be told what to do to and he also liked some control and therefore, have a limited government. Ben didn't want any dictatorship either, which meant no kings or queens. The fifth virtue Ben Franklin put on the list of America's virtues was "Idealism in Foreign Policy". Franklin once wrote, "The influence of every power is measured by the opinion one has of its intrinsic force." When he went to Paris as an envoy during the Revolution, Franklin proved himself a master of the diplomatic doctrine of realism by playing an adroit balance–of–power game between France, Spain, the Netherlands, and later on, Britain. The main idea of this virtue, as I see it, is that Franklin basically tried to portray each country's position as desirable to him. In a way, this virtue still exists in America today. The only thing I can think of for this virtue in today's world is Iraq. Even though it isn't ideal to be at war with a country, we do our best to fight against them and eventually hopefully end the war and win it. The sixth virtue Ben Franklin wanted was "Compromise". Franklin used the phrase, "Both sides must part with some of their demands," many times. He used it the most when the Constitutional Convention was deciding on the issue of whether the new Congress should be proportioned by population or have equal votes for each state. Past and Present of Civil Relations Civic Relations: Past and Present Introduction In his book, Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle presents five main components that encapsulate civic relationships: happiness, virtues, deliberation, justice and friendship. Aristotle introduces the concept of utilitarianism, which is key to the thoughts and ideas he portrays in Nicomachean Ethics because according to him, one must do whatever will bring the individual the greatest good. As human beings, we must focus on the good purpose–– on the end product of what we set our minds to. This is where the five components of civic relationships come in; each one plays a key role in order to solve this equation of seeking the greatest good. In this case, we will analyze, compare and contrast exactly what the greatest good in civic relationships consists of and see in what ways Aristotle's ideas are similar and different to the perceptions of successful, present day workplaces in the United States according to Great Place to Work Institute. Deliberation Aristotle discusses the importance of deliberation in ethics and civic relationships. Deliberation is key in order for society to decide what is right and wrong, good and bad. The ideas and opinions of people thus create particular standards for society, making things acceptable or not. Deliberation is also key when thinking of how to reach this ultimate good; it allows us to look at a particular situation with a critical eye and being exposed to ideas that are foreign from your own. ... Epistemic Virtue And The Ecological Crisis Summary In Byron Williston's essay, "Epistemic Virtue and the Ecological Crisis", Williston examines Joel Kovel's ideas on what it takes to get ahead in a capitalist society: "To succeed in the marketplace and to rise to the top, one needs a hard, cold, calculating mentality... None of these traits are at all correlated with ecological sensibility or caring" (Kovel, quoted in Williston, p. 250;252). Kovel's ideal person is one that is always looking for deeds that are self–serving. Kovel is implying that to be successful in life, one must put morals as an afterthought in order to move ahead in this capitalistic society. I disagree with Kovel statement, based on how Kovel's claims on how to be successful is not true for all professions. Furthermore, I disagree with Kovel's statements that if someone is successful, they cannot be environmentally sensitive, or possess the trait of being caring by looking at the cases of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The Effect of Biased Conceptions Being Forced Onto Individuals Within Society; Represented in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet (1996) Romeo and Juliet, directed by Baz Luhrmann effectively teaches the audience about morality and social acceptance, through the use of camera work, soundscape and mise–en–scene. These three techniques work together to emphasize this teaching by collaborating and synchronising with one another. Romeo and Juliet is in the drama and romance genre , and the severity of the character's actions clearly makes the film unique and distinctive. This film effectively communicates and teaches us that society often forces biased conceptions onto individuals, through the use of the three named techniques. In one of the introductory scenes of the film, Baz Luhrmann introduces the meeting of Romeo and Juliet at the Capulet's ball. Luhrmann does this by using a range of camera shots that help illustrate the romance and whimsicality of these scenes. Camera framing is an effective technique Luhrmann uses in this film; to communicate the concept that society does not want individuals to have their own opinions and beliefs. Two shots that are significant include a close up shot that vacillates between Romeo and Juliet. The duration of each shot is just long enough to portray the romance and whimsicality of the scene. The movie then unfolds into an emotional drama which dives deep into conspiracy and the psychodynamics of following orders. A Few Good Men was a critically acclaimed movie and was nominated for multiple Academy Awards. Similarly, authors Erich Fromm and Stanley Milgram, wrote essays that explored the morals behind obedience, and how disobedience of immoral commands can bring betterment to others. Although A Few Good Men presents disobedience as being a vice, evidence from Milgram and Fromm suggest that disobedience can bring about an improvement on current conditions. In A Few Good Men, both Lance Cpl. Harold W. Dawson and Pfc. Louden Downey were obedient to Col. Nathan R. Jessup's order to give Santiago the Code Red, even though it went against their preset morals. Dawson saw, through his own conscience, that hurting another person because of small mistakes was immoral. But because of his believe in the marines code, "Unit, Corp, God, Country," he was unable to allow himself to disobey a direct order. Author Milgram explored this same issue in his experiment. He asked why people followed orders no matter the negative effects it has on other people. In the study, roughly 60% of the test subject followed all orders to harms others. After the studies, Milgram inferred that this was because people have an underlying fear of disobeying a superior and do not trust their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Importance Of Cell Phones In The College Classroom Unfortunately, cell phones have become one of the biggest challenges instructors face in college classrooms as these devices have become a pervasive part of young people's lives. What used to only make phone calls and send text messages, now does our emailing, sends us Facebook and Snapchat notifications, and plays music. Additionally, our cell phones are not only used for personal activities, but for school and work life. We want to be reachable in case of an emergency, but the constant stream of notifications has led our productivity to significantly tumble down. Recently, I noticed that in many of my classes, even though the professor says there is a "no phone" policy, many students are scrolling through their social media feeds or responding to a text rather than paying attention to the lecture of the day. I admit to using my phone constantly during class, which often has led my grades to suffer poorly. I was always under the impression that leaders were cultivated through a series of trials and tribulations where this single individual's vision was faced with extreme difficulties. Through this course, I have learned leaders are, in fact, created, but not through the narrow lens I always saw with. Leaders can be created through the need for leadership, by cultivating leadership traits in individuals, and even from the spontaneity of challenging situations. Our scope of learning leadership was expansive this semester: we first identified the definition of leadership having to include leaders, followers, and the situation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leadership requires followers. Followership is the ability to align one's objectives with the objectives of the leader and actively participating in making the leader's vision come true. Dr. Prince and Robert Kelley taught us that even followers are dynamic and can act differently depending on what kind of follower they are. This concept of different types of followers is extremely important because leaders need to be able to adapt their strategy in dealing with followers. For instance, a leader will work with an exemplary follower differently than a leader would work with a pragmatic follower. The exemplary follower embodies everything a leader would want in a follower and trusts these followers to actively pursue success for the vision. A leader would not have to check in and intrinsically motivate these individuals; however, for pragmatic followers, it is the duty of the leader to let pragmatic followers know they can take risks for the betterment of the vision. Another key characteristic of leadership that I believe has to be constant through leaders and followers is the act of being ethical. As we have learned in class, ethics does not have a tangible definition because it varies between people and organization. Dr. Prince provided us the best framework to view ethics: virtues. • 51. How Should One Live How should one live? This question has troubled philosophers for millennia, with many attempts to definitively answer this. This essay sets out to explore two of these perspectives; Aristotelian virtue ethics and Kantian duty ethics. Moral philosophy is to depict the absolute ideal (Sullivan, 1980), Aristotelian virtue ethics argues that a virtuous eudemonic life constitutes a moral one. Kant differs; morality is rational and the categorical imperative it to be abided by to live as such. Aristotle is the main proponent in the field of virtue ethics, culminating in the seminal work on the Subject; Nicomachean Ethics (NE). NE recognises a life well lived is a virtuous one, Eudemonia be–came the ultimate goal. Eudemonia is the culmination of an entire life lived well, in the pursuit of virtue and excellence (Taylor, 1955). Aristotle viewed ethics as a practical pursuit, the ends to the means is to achieve Eudemonia and not to possess the knowledge without action. As stated in NE; we are inquiring not in order to know what virtue is, but in order to become good, since otherwise our inquiry would have been of no use (Aristotle, 1996, p34, 1103b8–1104a4 Book Two, ii). Thus morality is a state produced by habitation; by doing "right" acts we then acquire the right moral character, are not born in a state of good moral character (Taylor, 1955). • 53. Ancient Philosophy Plato's early dialogues are referred to as the Socratic dialogues. During these dialogues there is nothing to suggest that the search for virtue and the human good goes beyond the natural realm. In the early dialogues the good and proper things are found through questioning. This however, changes in Plato's middle dialogues. In his middle dialogues Plato leads us to the theory of knowledge. A shift toward the metaphysical guided by the first recognition of the Forms, that is, the true nature of all things. He claims Morals must be based on an appropriate political structure that can be upheld by leaders with strict scientific training. Wearing a button down collared shirt tucked into my khaki pants, I walked into my first volunteer position at an outpatient physical therapy clinic fifteen minutes early. I greeted the patients sitting in the waiting room with a kind hello and smile as I signed in at the front desk. While arriving early and well–dressed are key points that are often overlooked, there lies more in professionalism than the face value. Now as I'm faced with the opportunity of becoming a student professional in a physical therapy degree program I am asked to define professionalism. I will respect and understand that the patient can divulge some private/personal (other word here) information to me and I must respectfully keep that close to my chest. The same goes for peer circles. If a colleague tells me something personal then it is my professional responsibility to not tell anyone (other phrase here). Citing my claims with scholarly and peer–reviewed articles for decisions made on a patient's therapy mode during clinicals or in the academic environment when asked to talk about new therapeutic treatments for total knee replacements is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, respect is not something that is given all the time. Maybe this is because respect is not clearly understood. What is respect? The Webster's Dictionary defines it as an act of giving particular attention or high or special regard. Another definition shows respect as a feeling or attitude of admiration and deference toward somebody or something. And disrespect is defined as the lack of respect. Similarly, in The Giver, a dystopian novel written by Lois Lowry, Jonas, a twelve year old boy lives in a "perfect" community. Through the memories Jonas receives of the past from the Giver, he learns that feelings must be felt with the heart, and that they cannot be touched or seen. He now understands what it feels like to have real emotions, like happiness, anger, sadness, and love. Jonas also showcases his compassion when he runs away from the community with Gabriel and he "wept because he was afraid now that he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared about himself" (173). Jonas did not care if he could not survive, but he wanted Gabriel to survive. Since Gabriel's survival depended on Jonas staying alive, Jonas persevered to keep Gabriel alive. Jonas' newfound compassion also leads him to becoming empathetic. After learning what feelings really are and being able to feel them, Jonas starts to become empathetic, and he showcases his empathy through his pity for people he cares about and his selflessness. For example, when Jonas' friend, Asher is playing a war game, Jonas remembers the memory that the Giver gave to him about the boy dying, and he "saw again the face of the boy who had lain dying on a field and had begged him for water" (133–134). Courage is often shown when facing difficult leadership decisions. Honor is gained as one honor's the gods or serves one's own state. And virtue is gained as one looks out for the best interest of one's own state. The importance of such virtues is contrasted in Antigone and The Aenied. In Antigone, Creon shows the 3 components of a good leader when he takes rule and objectively enforces the laws to maintain order. Therefore, Creon is able to show the city what mortal laws are meant for–to keep order. Creon loves Athens, and displays his loyalty by serving as king and attempting to honor the city's gods by punishing a traitor. Though Creon's actions have good intentions behind them, his view begins to illustrate his self pride. After being informed that Polynices was buried, the Chorus tells Creon, Creon gains honor here from his belief that the gods don't honor traitors. Though Creon is obviously wrong, he shows some honor because in this situation Creon is simply trying to do what he believes is best for the city. Creon's honor stems from his want to carry out laws consistently. However, Creon's claim that gods don't honor traitors shows his circular logic. For who is to determine a criminal in Thebes? Because Creon is the ruler of the kingdom, Creon has the ability to judge of who is a criminal and who is not. And so in this sense, Creon reserves the right to himself and himself only. Thus leading Creon to believe he is more powerful, implicitly taking his position to that of more than just a king. We become like those with whom we spend our time with. So friendship is a virtuous activity that requires proximity and consistent engagement. Long–distance relationships where people are rarely engaged in their friendship are not friendships for Aristotle. Aristotle says that having too many friends is an obstacle to the good life. His reasoning is easy to see: if we are influenced by those whom we spend our time with, the smaller the group the more focused the influence. The right number of friends should be the number that a person could live with and divide oneself up among. His reasoning for this advice is that one's friends should be friends of one another if they are all going to spend their days in each other's company but he says this would be an arduous task to accomplish with a large number of people. Aristotle could not have for seen the accumulation of over a thousand friends connected to a larger network of more than three million people and accessible on a single web page. When his childhood friend visited an oracle and asked if anyone was wiser than Socrates, the oracle said there wasn't. In doing this, he demonstrates that you should not just accept what you see or hear at face value, rather, you should investigate further to understand why. It does you no good to not be able to explain it. If you cannot explain it, you could say that you might not even know it at all.
