2. You’ve Heard of It, and some people are practicing it , But What the
Heck Is It?
Bill Mollison, the Tasmanian son of a fisherman who first coined the term 1978, defined “permaculture”
as:“The conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive systems which have the diversity,
stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of the landscape with
people providing their food, energy, shelter and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable
way.”
In summary since there are different definitions around the world :
1. Recognising the intelligence of nature, understanding and working with it .
2. Practical method of developing ecologically harmonious, efficient and productive systems that can be
used by anyone , anywhere.

3. 3 |Types of ethics
There are three ethical principles in Permaculture, and these are:
1. Care of the Earth
2. Care of People
3. Return of surplus to Earth and people (also called “Fair Share
Care of the Earth - Includes all living and non-living things,
such as animals and plants, as well as land, water and air.
Keep land biodiverse and stable for future generations.By
not polluting the air we breathe, not poisoning the water we
drink, and not destroying the land which provides our
sustenance. This also including caring for the soil.
Care of people- It’s about promoting self-reliance and
responsibility towards the greater community. Sharing and
supporting each other. Also ,taking responsibility for more
than one’s own future, and looking to help one’s community
by sharing knowledge and experience, to skill people up so
that they can provide for some of their basic needs. The key
of collaborative effort to bring change to one’s own life and
that of others.
