BY: MOIRA SMITH, ISABELLA WAY, HALEY PERACCHIA, BRIAN LLULL, TYLER RONGIONE, AND JACLYN DURSO King Saul and King David
Saul is Anointed Samuel is guided by God to find a king for the Israelites He meets Saul, a farmworker, and anoints him king and presents him to tribes The theme of Saul is that God chooses the lowliest and least.
An Unsuitable King Saul wins victory over Ammonites Saul breaks faith with God -disobeys God’s Law twice -offers prebattle sacrifice -fails to carry out ban Samuel declares that Saul will now be rejected by God as King of Israel
Another Choice for King Samuel is led by God to search for another king -God sends Samuel to Bethlehem where he meets Jesse’s sons -he overlooks older sons and chooses the youngest, David
David and Goliath David armed by a slingshot defeats the Philistine giant Saul finds him gifted and decides to keep him at court but he does not know that David has secretly been anointed by Samuel
Saul’s Jealousy of David Saul becomes jealous of David and tries to kill him Saul’s children Jonathon and Michal help David escape Jonathon and David is one of the greatest tales of friendship God is no longer with Saul and everything he does goes wrong When Saul tries to kill David twice, his spear misses
David Flees to the Shrine Priests gives him bread and the sword of Goliath Saul finds out and orders the entire city of Nob to be destroyed David rescues an Israelite town from Philistines David could kill Saul at one point but doesn’t and Saul realizes how righteous David is
A Tragic End for Saul Israel’s battle goes as prophesied by a ghost of Samuel Saul kills himself rather than being captured
At first, King of Judah Israel is now without a king, but has 2 rival leaders: David (in the north), and Saul’s general Abner (south) Abner makes Saul’s eldest son Ishbaal, king over the northern tribes David is publicly anointed king of the southern tribes of Judah
David Reign Begins… After much bloodshed, Abner and Ishbaal are dead David mourns their death Philistines force David into battle and he is victorious David captures Jerusalem, a Canaanite walled city, and makes it his capital
Jerusalem as Ideal David made Jerusalem his capital – it was ideally located in a territory between the northern and southern tribes. Jerusalem would become a holy city for Jews, Christians, and Muslims in the future. David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem because it is a powerful symbol of God’s love.
David’s Devotion to God, Michal’s Fate There is no love in David and his wife Michal’s marriage. Michal shows contempt for David when he enters the city dancing with joy in front of the Ark of the Covenant .
The Davidic Covenant The prophet Nathan tells David that God has a plan for him; God will build him a royal dynasty that will endure forever David’s blood line endured for over 400 years before dropping into obscurity, The Jewish people are still waiting for the Messiah - “anointed one” Christians believe that Jesus was this Messiah.
David and Bathsheba David commits adultery with Bathsheba but feels no guilt. She becomes pregnant and he tries to cover it up by sending her husband Uriah back from battle, but his plan fails, David has Uriah killed in battle and marries Bathsheba.
David’s Flaws Lies and manipulates others to cover up his sin -results in murder David’s lesson and repentance: after being told a parable, David recognizes his sin and repents He realizes he is still subject to God and must follow the law First son becomes sickly and dies
Chosen but Sinful Why did such an account of David’s weakness and sin find its way into the Bible? Deuteronomists chose to make it clear that David is not above God’s law He must repent and suffer for his sins God works through limited and sinful persons
Rivalry and Treachery in Family King David has many sons with various wives. First born named Amnon Heir to his throne Amnon rapes his half sister Tamar and drives her away Absalom, Tamar’s full brother, kills Amnon Absalom runs away then returns to become new King He rebels and names himself king
Rivalry &Treachery Cont’d … During Absalom’s rebellion a man named Mephibosheth, the grandson of King Saul, tries to take the throne away from David, even though he treated him like a son During the battles against Absalom, David tells his soldiers not to kill him Absalom is defeated and killed while trying to escape David mourns him piteously
David’s Loyalty David’s loyalty to his family is so strong he refuses to punish Amnon for raping Tamar -trusts Absalom to come back into his court after killing Amnon -His devotion to his name seems to make him abandon good sense
Ending Years of David’s Reign David moves to reconcile the disgruntled tribes in the north and south - refuses to punish Saul’s family - David is enthroned and the kingdom is restored to a semblance of power - David worn out: his judgment is not always fair, has bias toward his favorites -this is bound to fuel resentments and rivalries in the future
