Editor's Notes

  • #14 This concept of the soul capable of life separate from the body indicates the author’s exposure to the Greek’s thought. Jews saw the person as a whole, inseperable being. When physical life was over there was no way for a person to live on, except for in people’s memories. Greeks introduced the concept of body & soul. This indication brought the possibility of life beyond death. Any Jewish conception of life after death had more to do with the rare event of restoring people to earthly life.
  • #15 The book of Sirach depicts wisdom as a woman who was with God at creation.Deeply concerned with the history of Israel, its heroes and its institutions.According to Sirach, wisdom’s home is in Israel.Wisdom is found specifically in the teachings of Israel as given by God.Keeping the commandments is a way of wisdom. The advice given in the Book of Sirach is full of wisdom for us as it was for ancients.
  • #16 Chapter 24 of the Sirach is one of the greatest writings about wisdom in the Bible.Sirach says wisdom comes from the mouth of God to make her dwelling with Jacob’s people
  • #17 Wisdom tests you with difficulties. Times of difficulty can be seed times, times for growing strong.
  • #18 The Song of Songs is one of the wisdom books but it is very different from all the others. The song of Songs is a book of love poems written by unknown authors
  • #24 Feast celebrated by the Jews, it honors the courage of Esther who overcame her fears to save her people. One of the feasts that Jesus must have celebrated as a child.Gets its name from the lot Pur- which Drew Haman to determine the date of the slaughter of the Jews.
  • #25  The book of Jonah is only 4 chapters long but it makes a serious point that God’s mercy extends to all, not just its “insiders”. The book is fiction, including its main characters.Author is unknown, setting in Assyrian Empire around 750 B.CJonah is Portrayed as scatterbrained and self-surving, sulks when God is more merciful to sinners then Jonah had expectedGod tells Jonah to go to Nineveh to warn its people that their wickedness is known and they will be punished. - Jonah to do with these people so instead of obeying God he flees to a ship bound for a distant land. Jonah is eaten by a fish and remains in his stomach for 3 days. Jonah is spit out and God now has his attention, God sends him a second time He delivers the message and after only one day of his arrival the people repent and fast. God doesn’t destroy the city after allJonah throws Gods mercy back in his faceJonah would rather die than lose his credibility as a prophet when his message does not come true.
  • #26 Ezra and Nehemiah had worked to purify Judaism of foreign elements and build the boundaries of Jewish identity. Some took it as Isreal alone could be worthy of God’s mercy.Book of Jonan was written to argue against the narrow-minded spirit.God called to be alright to the rest of the world.
  • #27 Jonan throws God’s mercy back into his face.Reason on why he refused to go to Nineven. He knew God would be too kindhearted to people.God makes it known that this grumpy prophet has no right to be angry. Book ends not knowing his answer.
