Although David has become a national hero and saved King Saul and his kingship, "life" goes in the tank for David. Popularity may look very appealing, but it can often come at a horrific cost. David would have to flee for his life and become a fugitive. How would he respond to all the calamity that befalls him?

A verse by verse commentary on 1 Samuel 21 dealing with David at Nob where he got bread from the priest and the sword of Goliath. It was then on to Gath where he pretended to be insane to fool the king of Gath.
Wisdom Personified: Abigail, Nabal and David (1 Samuel 25 Sunday School Lesson)Danny Scotton, Jr.
This account of the foolish and evil Nabal and the beautiful Abigail who has good understanding is sandwiched between two episodes (1 Sam 24, 26) in which David spares King Saul's life. The placement is purposeful. Given the number of parallels between Nabal and Saul, the author(s) are likely engaging in "narrative analogy" -- making a point without explicitly stating it...

Jesus has been called the "Great Physician." We think of His miracles of healing. But those miracles of healing our physical bodies point to a far greater miracle--the healing of our heart and soul. He doesn't just mean physical life and death. He points to something greater--spiritual life and death, both in this world and the next.

We can spend a lifetime looking for that which will fill our souls. We can look far and wide, with people, with events, with experiences, with acquisitions, and with just about anything else you of which comes to mind. But we will never touch the deepest parts of our soul until we find what Jesus called "living water." We will experience more of that living water as we become dispensers of living water, just like the woman we'll study this week!

In John 3, Jesus teaches Nicodemus, a committed leader of Judaism, about the necessity of being born again. John 3 also lays out God's rescue mission of men and women who are lost, guilty, and without hope, in need of rescue! But most folks aren't interested, not believing they need rescuing, and certainly not interested in the remedy for sin.

We so often hear the story of Mary this time of year, but it’s just as easy to gloss over the extreme cost it would have been to a young girl, to find herself graced with this ‘favor’ from God. What did it cost her in terms of her life’s plans? What did it cost her socially, with her family, with friends and neighbors? What does radical obedience cost us?

In spite of the mess of the world, Jesus is King. He reigns, even here, even amidst the rubble of sin and the rubble of people’s lives. It is that assurance that provides us peace and a soul that can rest in the often fiery and unpredictable world in which we live. It matters that Jesus is King!

It is likely during this time of COVID, that you have experienced a heightened sense of despondency. You've also likely experienced a heightened sense of loneliness, isolation, and being disconnected. Jesus experienced all of this as well. That He has experienced these things is meant to comfort you, lift you, and carry you along in during times like these. It's the HUMANITY of Jesus that surprises us with rest for our souls.

The Christmas message clearly spells out the deity of Christ, but this is not just a theological issue with which to ponder. It is meant to jolt us out of our spiritual stupor (sleepiness) to obeying "Jesus Christ our LORD." If obedience in our daily lives is replaced by right theology, then the boat has sailed without us.

What christ offers, what we offer p 1 seth gatchell november 22 2020Pacific Church
Beneath people's veneer are hidden questions. "Do I matter? Do I matter to anyone? Does someone really care about me?" People hunger and thirst for real "life," that sense of satisfaction that comes from being deeply connected with God and others. That is what Christ offers us, and He offers this real "life" through us to others! What we all want to know, is how does this happen?
This week we are looking at understanding and interpreting the Bible. The Bible is composed of 66 Books in multiple genres written over thousands of years. It can be daunting, and sometimes hard to understand. This week we are taking a few steps to try and make it a little easier to understand.
Jeremiah was known as "the weeping prophet." In spite of his faithful and bold preaching, he watched helplessly as his beloved nation continued to slide toward destruction. Jeremiah paid a terrible price for his message. He faced ridicule, scorn, torture and suffering. What was most heart-breaking was watching the Babylonians break through the city walls of Jerusalem, burn the city to the ground, turn stone buildings into rubble, and drive 90% of the people into exile. IT DIDN’T HAVE TO END THIS WAY.

Work economy goverment our biblical worldview part 8 seth g october 25 2020Pacific Church
Work is work, and work takes work. Work is another introduction into the realities of life. But work is not just about work. There is the interplay of economics and government. It is important to have what the bible calls "understanding," not just about work, economics and government to have "understanding" about how these three entities should work together.
Gender our biblical worldview part 7 seth g october 18 2020Pacific Church
In our day there is growing confusion about gender. There is a secular movement of thinking that seeks to minimize or obliterate any differences between genders. In this secular way of thinking, gender is something that one feels or identifies as. This is like leaving a great sailing ship on the high seas without sails and a rudder. It will be carried along wherever the current wishes, adrift on the open seas. The unintended consequences of this thinking is to create greater confusion for young people who already struggle with their gender and confusing feelings of their identity, but there is a wondrous design to complementary gender that seeks to build intimacy in a marriage, deeper relationships with people, and reflects the wonder of our Trinitarian God.
Our biblical worldview part 6 seth g october 11 2020Pacific Church
What does the bible say about marriage? Up until 15-20 years ago this was not a "controversial" topic. Everyone knew the answer. Our secular culture continues to send its tsunami waves at our Judeo-Christian heritage, causing great confusion. How are we to think about same-sex marriage? What does the bible say? Before we address those questions we will spend time reviewing what makes a marriage a biblical marriage.
As we continue our conversation on a Christian worldview, specifically as it deals with thinking through this upcoming election we are diving deeper and deeper into different issues. This week we are looking at the sanctity of life. What it means to be made in the image of God, to have value, and to be worthy of life, no matter what stage of life you are in.
A Biblical Worldview - The Role of GovernmentPacific Church
Our task is to always learn God's eternal truths and apply them to our lives. This includes how God views government. What does the bible say about government?
How do the bible's stories illustrate the truth or foolishness of how government is done? How do we apply the biblical truths in our country? This requires wisdom, discernment, humility and what the Bible calls "good sense."

Unity, the experience of community that worships God together, serves together, loves together, and shares common purposes provides joy for the heart that cannot be found in isolation. In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

2. DAVID'S AND JONATHAN LOYALTY; SAUL'S JEALOUSY OF DAVID
1 Samuel 18:1 After David had finished talking with Saul,
Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him
as himself. 2 From that day Saul kept David with him and
did not let him return to his father's house.
3. DAVID'S AND JONATHAN LOYALTY; SAUL'S JEALOUSY OF DAVID
3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he
loved him as himself. 4 Jonathan took off the robe he was
wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even
his sword, his bow and his belt.
4. SAUL'S JEALOUSY
1 Samuel 18:5 Whatever Saul sent him to do, David did it
so successfully that Saul gave him a high rank in the army.
This pleased all the people, and Saul's officers as well.
5. SAUL'S JEALOUSY
6 When the men were returning home after David had killed
the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of
Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with
joyful songs and with tambourines and lutes. 7 As they
danced, they sang: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David
his tens of thousands."
6. SAUL'S JEALOUSY
8 Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him. "They have
credited David with tens of thousands," he thought, "but me
with only thousands. What more can he get but the
kingdom?" 9 And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye
on David.
7. SAUL'S JEALOUSY
10 The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully
upon Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David
was playing the harp, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in
his hand 11 and he hurled it, saying to himself, "I'll pin
David to the wall." But David eluded him twice.
9. SAUL TAKES MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS; GOD THWARTS HIM
1 Samuel 18:12 Saul was afraid of David, because the
LORD was with David but had left Saul. 13 So he sent
David away from him and gave him command over a
thousand men, and David led the troops in their campaigns.
10. SAUL TAKES MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS; GOD THWARTS HIM
14 In everything he did he had great success, because the
LORD was with him. 15 When Saul saw how successful he
was, he was afraid of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved
David, because he led them in their campaigns.
11. SAUL TAKES MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS; GOD THWARTS HIM
20 Now Saul's daughter Michal was in love with David, and
when they told Saul about it, he was pleased. 21 "I will give
her to him," he thought, "so that she may be a snare to him
and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him."
So Saul said to David, "Now you have a second opportunity
to become my son-in-law."
12. SAUL TAKES MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS; GOD THWARTS HIM
25 Saul replied, "Say to David, 'The king wants no other
price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to
take revenge on his enemies.'" Saul's plan was to have
David fall by the hands of the Philistines.
13. SAUL TAKES MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS; GOD THWARTS HIM
30 The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle,
and as often as they did, David met with more success than
the rest of Saul's officers, and his name became well
known.
14. "…BE WISE AS SERPENTS, HARMLESS AS DOVES."
1 Samuel 19:1 Saul told his son Jonathan and all the
attendants to kill David. But Jonathan was very fond of
David 2 and warned him, "My father Saul is looking for a
chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go
into hiding and stay there.
15. "…BE WISE AS SERPENTS, HARMLESS AS DOVES."
3 I will go out and stand with my father in the field where
you are. I'll speak to him about you and will tell you what I
find out."
16. "…BE WISE AS SERPENTS, HARMLESS AS DOVES."
4 Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to
him, "Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he
has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited
you greatly.
17. "…BE WISE AS SERPENTS, HARMLESS AS DOVES."
5 He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine.
The LORD won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it
and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an
innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?"
18. "…BE WISE AS SERPENTS, HARMLESS AS DOVES."
6 Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: "As surely as
the LORD lives, David will not be put to death."
19. "…BE WISE AS SERPENTS, HARMLESS AS DOVES."
7 So Jonathan called David and told him the whole
conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with
Saul as before.
20. "…BE WISE AS SERPENTS, HARMLESS AS DOVES."
8 Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought
the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they
fled before him. 9 But an evil spirit from the LORD came
upon Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in
his hand. While David was playing the harp,
21. DAVID FLEES FOR HIS LIFE
1 Samuel 19:11 Saul sent men to David's house to watch it
and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife,
warned him, "If you don't run for your life tonight,
tomorrow you'll be killed." 12 So Michal let David down
through a window, and he fled and escaped.
22. DAVID FLEES FOR HIS LIFE
13 Then Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed, covering
it with a garment and putting some goats' hair at the head.
14 When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said,
"He is ill."
23. DAVID FLEES FOR HIS LIFE
15 Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them,
"Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him."
16 But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed,
and at the head was some goats' hair.
24. DAVID FLEES FOR HIS LIFE
17 Saul said to Michal, "Why did you deceive me like this
and send my enemy away so that he escaped?" Michal told
him, "He said to me, 'Let me get away. Why should I kill
you?'"
