The Need for Unity
 The lack of unity threatened the existence of the
Israelites.
Mixed Feelings about Nationhood
 The Book of Samuel and beginning of the First Book
of Kings describe the transition to Nationhood in 1000
B.C.
 Israel’s First three kings were Saul, David, and
Solomon.
The Story of David
 The story of David Israel’s greatest King, introduces
God’s promise that David’s line of descendants
 Bible became the basis for the prophecy that from the
line of David would come a great leader, the Messiah
 David is at the center of that history but as we now
have the story in the first book of Samuel.
A Special Birth and Call
 Samuel like a number of other important figures in the
bible was born to a woman who had not before been
able to bear a child.
 Samuel grew up serving God faithfully
 God announces through a holy man that Eli’s family
life will end
 God tells Samuel of the coming fall of Eli’s family
Saul Is Anointed
 Samuel is guided by God to find the king for the
Israelites
 Samuel anoints Saul, a farmer looking for his fathers
donkeys, king.
Saul and David in Conflict
 Saul breaks faith with God twice
First time-he was under pressure from the soldiers who
were about to be attacked by the Philistines
Second time- in another battle Saul takes the enemy
king and best livestock as spoils for the war.
• Saul shows to be unfaithful and he does not fully trust
in God.
• Samuel declares that Saul is rejected by God and the
Israelites kings
Another Choice for King
 Samuel finds Jesse’s youngest son , David, and chooses
him
 David does not publicly be declared king until later
Saul’s Jealousy of David
 David’s popularity, attractiveness and skill made Saul
jealous to the point where he tries to kill David
 Saul’s son Jonathon and daughter michal, also David's
wife, helps David escape the murderous traps
 David leaves the court as a fugitive
Saul’s Hatred
 Everything starts going wrong
 Twice trying to kill David, his spear misses
 When he sends David to the battle front, David wins
love from the people
 Saul’s children gave their loyalty to David
 Saul finally realizes nothing he does will stop David
from being king
Jonathan’s Love
 Jonathan loves David and his loyalty is described as
well as the risks he takes for David
David: The Loyal Outlaw
 David fled to the Shrine at Nob
 Priest gives him bread and the sword of Goliath.
 David next rescues an Israelite town from Philistines
then flees to a desert where David takes refuge in a
cave.
 Saul comes in the cave, also
 Saul understands that David is loyal and worthy to be
King.
No Perfect Hero
 Because David lied, it caused many people to loss their
lives.
David’s Loyalty
 After Saul realizes David’s goodness and right to be
King, David swears he will never harm Saul’s
descendants.
The Herdsman’s Wife
 David watched a herdsman’s shepherds but the
herdsman never gave David and his followers food.
 The herdsman’s wife Abigail came out and gave David
and his followers food and wine.
 When the herdsman dies, David marries Abigail.
Politics of Marriage
 By having Michal re-marry, Saul wanted to weaken
David.
 Later David wanted Michal back to strengthen his
claim.
The Philistines VS David and Saul
 David hides from Saul with the Philistines
 David tries to outwit the enemies of Israel
 The Israelites followers were planning to attack the
Philistines but the Philistines found out and sent them
all back to their towns
Saul’s demise, David’s rise
 The 1st book of Samuel completes the first of the major
themes named the reign of Saul
 The rise of David to his kingship is the theme in the
Second Book of Samuel
End for Saul
 Saul kills himself
David in Mourning
 A soldier reports to David that Saul is dead
 David is mad that a soldier killed Saul so David has
that young soldier killed.
King of Judan
 Israel now has no king
 Then Saul’s oldest son Ishbaal becomes king over the
Northern tribes
King of All Israel
 Abrier tries to make Ishbaal lead over David
 Aware that David’s star is rising, Abner betrays Ishbaal,
returns Michal to David, and persuades northern
tribes to choose David for king.
 David is anointed King
Murder and Mayhem
 Returning from a trip, Abner is waylaid and is
murdered by Joab.
 Two men from the North were going to kill Ishbaal,
when David finds out he is horrified and has the two
men executed
United at Jerusalem
 Philistines force David into battle.
 David captures Jerusalem and makes it his city
Jerusalem as Ideal
 Because Jerusalem was not belonged to any of the
twelve tribes, David could not be accused of playing
favorites.
 David’s decision is much greater than he will ever
know, he established what would become a holy city.
The Ark Comes to Jerusalem
 David brings the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem
 David said “To give God praise you must look like a
fool.”
David’s Devotion to God, Michal’s
Fate
 Michal does not see or value his love towards God, she
said their marriage was purely political
 She hates when David acts like a fool dancing for God
The Davidic Covenant
 David plans to build a house for God
The Messianic Promise
 David’s line endured unbroken for four hundred years
 Jews remembered this promise and waited for the
reappearance of a leader; the Messiah
 “Messiah” means the anointed one
 Different religions thought of the messiah differently
 Christians: Messiah  Jesus
David as a King
 Powerful, wealthy, and undefeated
 Stays away from the war and finds himself
Bathsheba
 Husband is Uriah, who is fighting in the war
David and Bathsheba
 David and Bathsheba have sexual relations and get
pregnant without anyone knowing.
 David makes Uriah get killed in battle so David and
Bathsheba can be together with their kid.
 They eventually get married and raise their son.
Grievous Sins
 David’s sins multiply
- Given into lust
- Lying and manipulating
- Murder
- Worries about himself and covering up his mistakes.
A Lesson and Repentance for
David
 Turns to Nathan the prophet
 Asks him to read a parable confronting his evils
 Repents
 Bears a son named Jedidiah in his adult life called
Solomon
Chosen but Sinful
 David was God;s chosen king for Israel
 Hero and Model of faithfulness
 Message: God works through limited and sinful people
with David as an example
 God will bring about the divine purposes even
through our flaws and weaknesses
Rivalry and Treachery in the
Family
 David had many sons but his first born Amnon was
heir to the throne
 Amnon raped his half sister Tamar, when David found
out he did not punish Amnon because he is the heir to
the throne
 When Absalom (David’s enemy) is killed in trying to
escape, David is heartbroken
Senseless Devotion
 David's loyalty to his family is so strong, he trusts
Absalom to come back into his court after killing
Amnon
 David had so much devotion to his son
The Ending Years to David’s
Reign
 After failed results, David moves to reconcile the
disgruntled tribes in both north and south
 David refuses to punish Saul’s family
David’s Legacy: Nation Building
Trust in God, A Promise Forever
 David established his kingship over all tribes of Israel
 Saw David as a model of the kings devoted to God
 Always was devoted to God
