2. INTRODUCTION
I am going to analyse the ‘People help the People’ music video
by Birdy as it links into the genre that I am thinking of doing for
my music video. I am going to analyse it for how the genre of
the music comes across through the mise en scene in it e.g.
lighting, costumes, setting and performance.
Moreover, I will be analysing it for how it meets the codes and
conventions of music videos in terms of genre and how easy it
is to tell what genre of music it is.
3. ANALYSIS FOR GENRE
In terms of genre Birdy’s music would fall under the indie category
which is fits the conventions of well as indie music videos tend to
feature their singer in a live performance and the main focus is them
singing and doing what they love.
A modern twist to indie music videos are that they often put on this
with a narrative included as a sort of break to the music video and
keep the viewer interested.
People help the people definitely follows the modern indie style of
music video as it involves her singing but cuts back between different
people that are within the shot and focuses on them. But is also
follows a narrative as all the people seem to either walk past Birdy or
be in her eye line whilst she’s
travelling on a bus. When she is in a large
crowd of people they tend to be walking
the opposite way so that all the people we
see are through her eyes and how she sees
them as well as her being the main focus
and not getting lost in a big crowd.
4. ANALYSIS
This music video is effective right from the start, the video has been
slowed down when filming the bridge which sets the calm mood that
is present throughout the video yet shows the people walking past it
in a vulnerable light.
Then the music video uses a jump cut to Birdy sitting on the bus
looking out the window, this is a close up and captures her singing
throughout which is the how performance aspects are featured within
it.
