1. The pelvic floor is formed by the levator ani and coccygeus muscles. The levator ani is comprised of the pubococcygeus, iliococcygeus, and ischiococcygeus muscles.
2. These muscles originate on pelvic bones and insert on the coccyx, pubic bone and perineal body. They act to support pelvic organs, maintain continence, and assist during childbirth.
3. Weakening of the pelvic floor muscles can lead to pelvic organ prolapse. Kegel exercises help strengthen the muscles.
