June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME TET HOLIDAY 2020
The students had a wonderful day at school at the Christmas Party. They were
very happy and excited. They were so cute.
8. Christmas and Tet are the most expected festivals
for children of the year. If they were eager to
meet Santa on Christmas Day, then they wit-
nessed the New Year tree-raising ceremony,
watched how to make banh chung and played
some traditional games on Tet Holiday. These
were really interesting experiences with them.

21. For me, being a kid at Christmas is better then being an adult. The first reason is that I
can get presents from many people, especially the one from Santa which I expect the most.
Actually, I am really excited and thrilled during Christmas Eve when I am waiting for
Santa. I try to stay awake but I can’t help sleeping. The second reason is that I can enjoy
many Christmas activities with my friends and my family. For example, there are a lot of
Christmas parties for kids to join at school, at churches and many other ones where we
can sing while eating gingerbread. We can also participate in a variety of fun games, too.
Last but not least, I don’t have to go to school so I can go on a vacation with my family. If
only I could be a kid at Christmas forever so that I don’t have to worry about anything
like adults.

22. My name’s Samantha, I’m one of Santa’s elves. Last Christmas, Santa took me with him
to give the presents to the children. At night on the 24th
December, he told me to get lots
of presents to put into his big red bag and get ready to deliver them. Exactly at 12 mid-
night, Santa rode his reindeers to deliver the presents.
We went around the world, jumped into lots of chimneys and gently put the gifts
down near the tree. I saw that all the families had decorated their Christmas trees and
around the chimney had lots of colorful curls, sweet candies, etc. The weather was so
cold! I thought that it was about -10°C to -7°C but Santa didn’t care about the cold!
“Giving the children their presents makes me feel very warm and comfortable!” he said.
We went to lots of houses, from 700 to 1000 houses. That is also the number of children
that had written the letters to Santa Claus. After all that, he rode the reindeers and went
back to our home.
I went back to my room and brushed my teeth and washed my face. Now it was 7 AM
and I jumped into the bed and slept! I was so tired but felt happy too! Thien Trang

23. Lunar Calendar Class Animals
I was born in 2007, the year of the pig in the
Asian zodiac. There are 12 animals in this zo-
diac, people are given an animal depending on
the year they were born. According to the zodiac,
people who are pigs often hold unique attitudes
and standpoints amongtheir peers. Their weak-
nesses are being gullible, which means they be-
lieve everythingthey are told, slow-witted and
faltering, which means they can’t make deci-
sions well. The zodiac began after the Jade Em-
peror god of China invented a race between 12
animals across a riverto heaven. The order of the
animals inthe calendar depends on where they
finishedthe race. As the Ox was about to win the
race, the rat leapt from his head on to the bank to
finish first, then the Ox arrived in second place.
The order of the 12 animals is Rat, Ox,Tiger,
Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey,
Rooster, Dog andPig. Each animal takes it’s turn
on the calendar every 12 years. Andrew
Nguyen
I was born in 2007, the year of the Pig.
People born as a Pig are thought to have
qualities of being loyal to friends & family,
cooperative with others, ambitious in life, good-
tempered, and honest. However, the bad per-
sonalities of a Pig are being gullible, which means
they are prone to beingtricked, sluggish, and short-
tempered. Long ago there was no Asian zodiac. The
Jade Emperor godof China wantedto choose 12 ani-
mals to be his guards, so he sent an immortal being
totell the animals of Earth about a race. The sooner
the animal went through the Heavenly Gate, the better
the rank the animal would have as his guard. Rat woke
up very early to race, but on the way to the gate he
encountered a river, so he jumped into Ox’s ear while
Ox was crossing the river and dashed off through the
Heavenly Gateto win. Ox was second, while Pig was
last, just behind Rooster and Dog.
I was born in the year of the dog in 2006. China has a
story about a god called the Jade Emperor who made a
race for 13 animals to cross a river to get into heaven.
However, the cat was late and lost its chance, so there
were only 12 animals in the race. The dog finished 11th
because it thought the river water was clean, so he took a
bath. People born in the Year of the Dog are usually in-
dependent, sincere, loyal and decisive. I think I’m deci-
sive because I’m good at making decisions, loyal be-
cause I can keep my friends secrets and independent be-
cause I can clean my room and cook eggs. However, I
don’t think I’m sincere because I don’t always tell
people how I feel. The bad characteristics of dogs are
that they are conservative, stubborn, and emotional. I
think I’m conservative because if people try to help, but
do it a different way to how I wanted, then I don’t like it.
I think I’m stubborn because I like to do things my own
way, but I don’t think I am very emotional.
Shawnee
There are differences in New Year between Asia and
other countries, in the west people spendtime trav-
elling & relaxing as they have two weeks off for Christ-
mas & New Year. New Year in Vietnam is a time for
people to return home to enjoy a long holiday. Western
New Year is on 1st January every year, but Tet is held
between January and February; it depends on the lunar
calendar. Most people in Western countries celebrate
New Year with a countdown to midnight. However, in
Vietnam people celebrate Tet for at least a week, eat
traditional food and go to pagodas to pray for good
health in the New Year. At Tet kids get lucky money,
but western kids open presents at Christmas. Vietnam
also has lots of games at Tet like bau cua tom ca, bam-
boo dancing, etc. and also lion & dragon dances inside
houses and stores, as people believe the dances will
scare ghosts fromthe building. Le Thi Phuong Thao
I was born in 2006, the year of the dog. This
zodiac sign has an independent, sincere, loyal
and decisive personality. Their strengths are
being loyal, responsible, courageous and lively
but their weakness is they’re sensitive,
conservative, stubborn and emotional.They’re
the second last animal in the zodiac years. In
the zodiac race created by the Jade emperor,
the dog was in 11th place. He was an adept
swimmer but he hadn’t had a bath in a long
time, the sun had warmedthe water, so he
stayed in the river and had a bath. I think I’m
similar to a dog because I’m responsible,
clever, and courageous. I’m also sensi-
tive, stubborn and emotional.The dog
didn’t care about the race, he just took a
bath in the river even though he was
good at swimming. Tran Huu Minh
