all those paper based items that often need to go with your
BOM. At the end, you will have several methods for
connecting it all together into a single, consumable, BOM.

3. Definitions: (typical)
A Part Number is an unambiguous identifier of a particular part design. Its purpose is to
simplify reference to that part.
A Part is generally defined as a thing in CAD.
A Non-Modeled Part is something that appears on a BOM but does not (generally) have a
CAD model. Sometimes called an Item.
A bill of materials is a list of the raw materials, sub-assemblies, intermediate assemblies,
sub-components, parts, and the quantities of each needed to manufacture an end product.

4. A Specification is:
Any document which is required by the manufacturer to produce the product defined by the
BOM. (historically paper but stored in some electronic media)
- A performance specification for a component (how to apply a paint, or max length of a
pressure hose, or torque of a bolt, etc)
- A Drawing or CAD file
- Assembly instructions (how to put your product together)
- Shipaway spec - How to ship the product to the customer
- A packing list
- How to mark the outside of the container
- The actual component spec from the supplier
- Inspection receipt
- Many more…..
- A link to any one of these….

5. Let’s start by making a list of our specs and where they are:
Specification Location
PDF Drawing of the design My Cad system
Assembly instructions Google doc or MS Word
Suppliers component spec sheet A link
A photo of the product My IPhone or mobile device
List of contents or inspection checklist Google sheet or Excel
Email from the client Gmail

6. Choosing a cloud storage. What do you need?
1. CAD viewing - perhaps Autodesk A360
2. Documents - google drive or dropbox, or even BOX
3. Do you want to sync content from your mobile device? Photos or scans?
4. You will be creating links from your BOMs to this storage. Can you share it
with your vendors? Or perhaps customers? International or China?
5. Cost. Google drive is 1.99/100Gb

Create a BOM
Add Grease to the BOM, Image
Add property “Link to item”
Edit the Reference to add the link to the grease

Closing thoughts PDF, Specs, Links, etc
● An organized approach to authoring specs will streamline the process
● Move common specs to cloud or upload to cloud on-the-fly
● Setup your CAD template to include the cloud settings
● Get data off local PC’s!!! This is an excellent way to start.
