Pavegen technology generates electricity from footfalls using piezoelectric materials. It consists of piezoelectric sensors embedded in floor tiles that convert the mechanical energy from each step into small amounts of electrical energy. The piezoelectric effect causes the generation of a voltage when mechanical pressure is applied. Pavegen tiles have been used in a variety of applications and can generate 2-5 joules of energy from each footstep. They provide an alternative to solar panels for generating small amounts of renewable energy.
