This document analyzes perspectives on Peru's forest sector from 2008-2009. It finds that economic growth has led to increasing social conflicts over mining, oil production, and deforestation on indigenous lands. Illegal logging in Peru has negatively impacted indigenous communities' rights and the environment through deforestation, biodiversity loss, and pollution. While a 2006 free trade agreement between Peru and the US aimed to reduce illegal logging, the Peruvian government misused it to rapidly implement reforms promoting private investment in biofuels and extractive industries without oversight, exacerbating tensions with indigenous groups. Going forward, Peru faces challenges of promoting sustainable forest governance that balances economic development with social and environmental protections.
