Using debt swaps to address debt, climate and nature loss post-COVID-19IIED
In this presentation, Paul Steele discusses how debt relief can be addressed through climate and nature programme swaps.
The presentation was part of an online event on 9 September 2020 hosted by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) that brought together experts to discuss the use of debt for climate and nature programme swaps as a tool to address poverty, the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.
IIED chief economist Steele is a co-author of a report released the same month showing how large-scale debt swaps can help fight debt, climate change and nature loss together (https://pubs.iied.org/16674IIED/).

This presentation is targeted to the community development practitioners who are working in various field of human welfare as livelihood improvement, human health, water and sanitation, renewable energy etc. this presentation intends to expand their understanding on climate change. Climate change issues are multisectoral and require a multi-stakeholder consultation and action in order to apply adaption and mitigation schemes. It needs to be thought broadly that the problem they are addressing might be the impacts of climate change. Community development workers are the agents of change. They must start advocating on 2°C warmer world as their dissemination of information are quite effective than other means and media.

On May 21, 2021, ICLR conducted a Friday Forum webinar titled 'Climate Disclosure, Litigation and Finance'"Climate Disclosure, Litigation and Finance' is a forthcoming chapter in 'Canada in a Changing Climate: National Issues'. In this webinar, chapter authors Paul Kovacs, Gordon McBean, Gordon Beal, Maryam Golnaraghi, Pat Koval and Bohan Li examined the evolving climate risks for businesses and governments.
Climate change is now widely regarded as an environmental and an economic issue. While the policy discussion about climate change emphasizes the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to better cope with the impact of extreme events, the business community is increasingly focused on the physical and transition risks and opportunities presented by climate change. The research team will discuss how managing the risks and opportunities associated with climate change affect a company’s ability to access capital, deliver products and services, hire and retain employees and achieve positive financial performance.
Paul Kovacs is the Executive Director of the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction.
Professor Emeritus Gordon McBean is with the ICLR and Department of Geography and Environment, Western University and the past President of the International Council for Science and former ADM of the atmospheric component of Environment Canada.
Gordon Beal, CPA, CA, M.Ed., is the Vice President of Research Guidance and Support for Chartered Professional Accountants Canada and a member of Canada’s National Climate Change Adaptation Platform Plenary.
Dr. Maryam Golnaraghi is the Director of Climate Change and Environment at The Geneva Association, a platform of Group CEOs of largest insurance companies, a non-resident senior fellow at The Atlantic Council and serves on a number of boards and advisory councils in the US, Canada and the UK.
Patricia Koval, JD, is a Board Director of a number of companies in the United States and Canada, a former partner of a major Canadian law firm, and a member of the Ontario Advisory Panel on Climate Change.
Dr. Bohan Li is a research associate at the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction.

Restoring the Earth for a Healthier FutureEMMAIntl
Today marks the 52nd anniversary of the birth of the true modern environmental movement, however, you probably know it as Earth Day. Early in the pandemic, many hoped that the lockdowns would help the Earth heal as people began to stay home, stopped commuting, and some factories even had paused production. Unfortunately, as things are beginning to open back up emissions are on the rise again and we need to continue to think about the future consequences...

12. McKinsey-inspired plans fail to address major
drivers of deforestation; they reward the
industries that cause it.
13. McKinsey-advised studies play down the environmental
impact of industrial logging and plantations; they
exaggerate the impact of smallholders and farmers.
14. McKinsey’s advice has informed national plans which
have then been criticised by funding institutions and are
unfit for purpose.
15. RECOMMENDATIONS
McKinsey: publish the data, assumptions
and analysis behind its cost curve methodology.
McKinsey: commit to reviewing

McKinsey: reject logging as a climate
