Perception
What others think we are.
Who we are.
What we want to be.
Understand
passion and
profession
Passion is overwhelming
enthusiasm
Profession is a
paid occupation
Put others
satisfaction
first
• Shower your peers
with praise.
• Recognize that
you are amongst
your peers.
• Respect and
acknowledge the
talent of others.
• Be humble.
Ways to put other people’s needs first
Rediscover
your inner
awesomeness
Share your
knowledge
• Look around you!
• Turn your senses
on sponge mode.
• Get outside your
core group.
• Make expertise
your specialty.
• Meet someone new
or someone you’ve
always wanted to meet.
Look, listen, and learn!
Manage your
expectations
“I want to win
every tournament!”
Ambition
“My business strategy
is to win every
tournament.”
Do what you
say and say
what you do
Fail and
fail often
“People who don’t make mistakes,
don’t do anything.”
Know your
non-
negotiables
•Integrity and
honesty
•Do what’s right—
no gray areas
•Be loyal to yourself
and others.
Example of my non-negotiables
Say thank you
Appreciation goes a long way
• Recognize your
vendors and partners.
• Give a shout-out on
social media.
• Make it personal,
authentic, and
meaningful. People still
like written notes.
• Don’t forget the little
people (Co-anglers are
people too).
Calibrate
your attitude:
How cool will
tomorrow be?
Make each day a great catch!
•Create real
meaning in every
introduction.
•Show empathy
towards others.
•Start or continue to
do awesome things.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 The first rule of this talk is it is not about fishing – it is about The world of 3ps Passion Profession Perception
  • #4 So here we are – a diverse group of fishing enthusiasts, guides, tournament anglers, outdoor advocates, and industry representatives with multiple layers of who we are, what we want to be, what we want others to think we are, or what others perceive us to be   First and foremost I create a philosophy that those I touch can understand.
  • #5 So this was a new challenge for me – the top ten ways to create the passionate professional   So here we go!!!
  • #6 Number 10 – understand passion and profession Starts with defining passion and profession
  • #7 Passion – strong feeling, barely controllable emotion, overwhelming enthusiasm Not a plan – it is a feeling and feelings change The power to surprise you where your energy or effort meets other peoples needs What makes you come alive?
  • #8 Profession – a paid occupation, especially one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification: Of, relating to or connected with a profession   It is a look – a perception based in ambition Offers solutions to problems and creates ideas Creates competition
  • #9 Number 9 – put others satisfaction first – its not about you!! Without meeting the needs of others – why do you need a professional?
  • #10 Shower your peers with praise – they make you better! Recognize that you are amongst your peers – ensure you are worthy of that distinction Respect and acknowledge the talent of others Be humble – gosh I know all about this one – I'm a co-angler and tournament fisherman – around you are the best anglers in the united states and probably the world.
  • #13 Look around you!! If you don’t have your senses on sponge mode it is time! Get outside your core group Make expertise your specialty Meet someone new or someone you’ve always wanted to meet
  • #14 Number 6 – manage your expectations
  • #15 Ambition It is ok to want to win every tournament or limit on every guide trip that is ambition But if your business plan indicates that you will actually do this we may have an expectation issue
  • #16 Number 5 – do what you say and say what you do
  • #17 Number 4 – fail and fail often
  • #18 My dad’s favorite quote – people that don’t make mistakes – don’t do anything Guides – ever had the perfect bite the day before the charter? Tournament fisherman – ever been humbled with a finish? Have you ever backed your boat in with the straps still on?
  • #19 Number 3 – know your non-negotiables My favorite rule This rule is about you
  • #20 Integrity and honesty – most important to me (passion and profession) - If you lie, cheat, or steal - If you compromise these values No gray areas – do what is right - Right vs. Wrong matters - Ethical behavior Loyalty – when decision made – all in - Network of similar values
  • #22 As a group you do this very well Recognizing your vendors and partners Social media shout outs What else can you do Make it personal Authentic and meaningful People still like written notes Don’t foregut the little people Co-anglers are people too
  • #24 Create real meaning in every introduction Who will you meet Where will it lead Show empathy towards others – embrace others success Start or continue to do awesome things – share passion – it is infectious Remember to be positive even during trying times – professional
  • #25 The items in the top 10 list will go along way in helping to define who we are, what we want to be, and what we want others to think we are
  • #26 IDEA: Somehow tie the story together: Reference the Shocked, Skeptical, and Curious from the beginning? Most importantly Passion starts with you Professional is a perception by those you serve
