Participle is a form of a verb that acts as an adjective.
Example:
Limping, the hiker favored hisaching ankle. (present participle)

Identifying participles
Underline the participles that function as
adjectives in the following sentences. Draw an
arrow to the word that it modifies.
Example: A broken line was drawn by the kid.
1. The revised curriculum improved the language
proficiency of the students.
2. The spoiled food was left on the table.
3. The frightened dog crawled under the shrub.
4. Father resumed his unfinished job.
5. His disturbed conscience bothered him so much.
6. The couple argued over an unfinished job.
7. Religious fanatics insist that they saw the dancing sun.
8. What an exhausting day it was!
9. The editor submitted the corrected copies to the press.
10. Crying, the girl was sorry for her shortcomings.

Identifying Present and Past Participles
Underline the participles in the

present or past.
Present
Example: The returning players had a story to tell.
1. Mrs. Jefferson’s fractured hip is very painful.
2. A fluttering white flag appeared in the distance.
3. Water surged over the banks of the swollen river.
4. This arsonist has an established pattern for fires.
5. Drizzling rain kept us all in the house.
6. We sat and listened to the pounding waves.
7. The handyman left splattered paint all over the
floor.
8. The shattered window needs replacement.
9. During the storm a broken branch fell onto the roof
of our house.
10. Disgusted, his mother glowered at the mess.

Verb or Participle?
A verb shows an action, a condition, or the fact that
something exists.
Example: The dog is snarling at the boy.
(What is the dog doing?)
A participle acting as an adjective modifies a noun or
a pronoun.
Example: The snarling dog attacked the boy.
(Which dog?)

Distinguishing Verbs and Participles
Identifyeachunderlinedwordas verb or participle.

Example: The 1984 Olympics added an exciting event.

1. In the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, 77,000 people
waited.
2. Through the streets tired runners raced toward the
Coliseum.
3. The cheering crowd rose as Joan Benoit, a member of the
U.S. Olympic team entered.
4. She ran around the track easily and crossed the finish line.
5. Smiling, Joan waved to the spectators as they cheered her.
6. Aboutfourmonthsbefore the race, Joan underwent surgery
on her right knee.
7. Training, she had wondered whether or not she would be
able to compete.
8. When the race was over, Joan learned that she had run the
third-fastest marathon ever run by a woman.
9. She ran the 26 miles and 385 yards of the exhausting race in
2 hours, 24 minutes, and 52 seconds.
10. Pleased, Joan accepted her gold medal as the winner of the
first women’s marathon in Olympic history.

Recognizing Participial Phrase
Underline the participial phrase.
Then draw an arrow from each
participial phrase to the word it modifies.
Example: Munching hay, the elephant looked content.
1. Our house, shaded by trees, stays cool in the
summer.
2. Kicking stones, the children ran down the street.
3. They boarded the subway packed with people.
4. Frightened by the smoke, they called the fire
department.
5. Ms. Foley served a pie steaming from the oven.
6. The commuters, stuck in traffic, were impatient.
7. In the summer the sun, beating on the roads, melts
the tar.
8. He ordered a sundae dripping with hot fudge.
9. Thinking quickly, she took her foot off the
accelerator.
10. Whirling on one skate, the skater executed a perfect
turn.

A participial phrase is a participle modified by an adverb or
adverbphrase or accompaniedbya complement. The entire
phrase acts as an adjective.
Examples:
Swimmingleisurely, we didn’t notice the dolphin approach.

( leisurely is an adverb)
Swaying in the wind, the palms are like dancers.
Participial phrase noun
( in the wind is an adverb phrase modifying swaying)
The boy wearing the blue sweater is my brother.
