Why paraphrase?
 To incorporate an author’s ideas into your paper
 Unless you have a good reason to quote a
passage, you should paraphrase or summarize your
sources

Paraphrasing Steps
1. Copy exact quote from original text
2. Change words
3. Change sentence structure
4. Check wording and meaning against original
Step 1: Copy quote exactly
 Choose quote from text that expresses a main point
you want to paraphrase.
 Place in quotation marks and include parenthetical
citation
Step 2: Change words
 What words and phrases can we replace with
synonyms or leave out?
Step 3: Change sentence structure
 Can you rearrange modifiers, phrases, or clauses
while preserving meaning?
 Can you change from active voice to passive voice?
Step 4: Check against original
 How many of the same words appear?
 Are there words that don’t quite capture the same
meaning?
 Is anything important left out?
 Are there parts included that can be left out?
