PARAMOUNT 1994 CASES IN CORPORATE FINANCE July 12, 2013 Board of Directors
Paramount Re: Acquisition Dear Board of Directors: In order to make our recommendation to the
Board, we must address the following questions: Acquiring Paramount Communications, Inc (PCI)
was important for Redstone as it would enable Viacom to obtain a stronger position in the
communications industry. His initial offer was designed to show that Viacom was a better strategic
partner for PCI than QVC. The deal was more in favor of Viacom than Paramount as Viacom's
initial offer was a combined offer of cash and securities. Under the terms of the initial offer,
Paramount shareholders would receive voting and nonvoting ... Show more content on

Developments in Mass Media
Media has a large influence on how people live their lives. The different media that developed in the
last century provide entertainment, relevant information, and influence what we buy and how we
act. Some of the significant developments in the evolution of mass media during the last century
include Film, Radio, Television, and the Internet.
Evolution of Mass Media
Film first appeared in the early 1900's and comprised of short films (no more than 30 minutes) that
gave entertainment to viewers in Nickelodeon's or storefronts that charged a nickel for admission
(American Movie Classics Company, LLC, 2017). It wasn't until the 1910's that "full–length"
feature films were developed and Nickelodeons began to give way to movie theatres. In the late
1920's sound was added into movies and by the mid–1930's "silent" films were no longer produced
(American Movie Classics Company, LLC, 2017). Adding sound in films allowed viewers to have a
deeper connection with the stories being told. The "previews" that were shown before the movie
also were used as a source of news, even showing footage during World War II. Another media that
came into commercialization during this time was the Radio. The first radio station to go on air was
KDKA in Pittsburgh in November of 1920 (Gugliotta, 2007). Radio stations provide news, music,
and stories to local audiences using some

Comcast Corporation Holdings Ltd.
Comcast Corporation Holdings Ltd
Comcast Corporation is a company in the services sector in the cable and broadcasting industry
located in the United States that offers media, entertainment, and communications. The Corporation
is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Comcast, 2016). This paper will be an extrapolation
of Comcast's history from the day it was founded to its current stature.
Timeline of important events in the organization's history
Comcast Corporation was founded in 1963 by Julian A. Brodsky, Daniel Aaron, and Ralph J.
Roberts and was later incorporated in 2001 on December as a media and technology firm. In that
year, the founders purchased and operated a local antenna television system that was located in
Tupelo, Mississippi. Initially, the company was called American Cable Systems but in 1969, it
changed its name to Comcast. It was in 1972 that Comcast went public and transacted in the
NASDAQ stock market under the CMCSA ticker symbol. It then underwent a series of acquisitions
and mergers between 1986 and 1996. It is then that it transacted with E! Entertainment, E. W.
Scripps, Maclean Hunter, Storer Communications and Group W Cable. In 1997, Comcast benefited
from Microsoft 's $1 billion investment. In a span of the next half a decade, it also entered several
transactions with Greater Philadelphia Cablevision, Prime Communications, AT & T Broadband,

QVC is the premier in home shopping network. QVC is based on Quality, Value, and Convenience.
QVC is represented in six countries and soon to be seven. QVC went live 1986 ruling the television

calling in from the home phone was no longer the only way to order from QVC. Technology has
expanded the portals in which shopping can be done. Technology has also introduced a new
generation to a new way of shopping. The organization needs to adapt and transform their marketing
techniques to stay relevant in today's retail world.

Dan's Gift Favorites: A Case Study
Dan Wheeler, a host on QVC returned to work for the first time in several months since his wife
Beth entered the hospital, came home to live out the remainder of her days, and then passed away to
her heavenly home. Dan posted the news on his Facebook page on Nov. 24, 2015, to inform
everyone that he would be joining Dan Hughes for two hours of practical gifts, in the segment called
"Dan's Gift Favorites."
Dan Wheeler is a favorite of QVC shoppers and they were elated to see him return. One of Dan's
last broadcasts from the shopping network was on September 17. He took a leave of absence so he
could spend what time he had left with his wife Beth who suffered from cervical cancer for three
years.

world how amazing his wife was and how everyone said that she made them feel right at home.
Dan posted on his QVC blog that many called Beth, "The Matriarch of our family," and how her
radiant personality made their house a home. Her laughter and smile wasn't just contained into one
room when she was alive, it permeated into every room. Dan and his family are devout Christians
and he credits his faith in God for getting him through the tough times.
Dan wrote a reminder for everyone celebrating Thanksgiving holiday. "So please.....as you look

Joan Rivers Character Traits
The legendary American actress and television host Joan Rivers lived on in this year's Grammy
Awards, after she nabbed a posthumous award under the best spoken word album category, Page Six
reported. It was her work "Diary of a Mad Diva" which cinched her win, and her former fellow
Fashion Police co–hosts received the award in her honor. It was a heart–warming and tear–jerking
spectacle as Kelly Osbourne got all choked up as she congratulated and thanked her co–worker and
friend on stage. It was Rivers' first win at the Grammys. She was previously nominated way back in
1984 for her comedy album, "What Becomes a Semi–Legend Most?" After the award, her daughter

clubs, then later making a guest appearance at The Tonight Show, which was then hosted by Jack
Paar. She was an unstoppable comedic genius, which is probably why New York Times television
critic Jack Gould, who passed away in 2013 described her as "quite possibly the most intuitively
funny woman alive" back in 1968. Throughout her career, Rivers would dabble in plays, movies and
talk shows, either as an actress, writer, or host. Rivers was nominated in 1994 for a Tony Award for
Best Actress in a Play for her performance in Sally Marr...and her escorts. She gained further fame
and recognition after she began co–hosting the E! Celebrity show called Fashion Police from 2010
to 2014. She was well–known for her fearless tact and opinionated views. This probably lead her to
market a line of jewelry and apparel on he QVC shopping channel. She also starred in a reality
series with her daughter called Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? from 2011 to 2014, and became

Jonathan Miller is the founder and owner of the company called Element Bars. He has a
professional background in venture capital, which means that he has experience with entrepreneurial
endeavors and they risk they entail. Miller has successfully started other businesses in the past,
beginning his entrepreneurial career in 1999. The skills he gained during these endeavors has won

The company's business model is comprised of 80% sales from online orders from individual
customers, and 20% from wholesale orders from corporate customers such as gyms, hotels, spas,
and wellness centers. Individual customers generally buy one to three dozen bars at a time, while the
corporate customers tend to buy in bulk then resell the co–branded bar. (Element Bars, n.d.)
Currently, there are very few competitors in the energy bar market that offer the same unique value
proposition as Element Bars. As Miller points out in the case, there are few companies that are able
to produce at the small (individual) scale that his company can.
One of the first options that an entrepreneur will explore for financing is debt, usually through a
bank loan. Before appearing on Shark Tank, Miller applied for a $40,000 business loan, but was
rejected. Another financing option is a line of credit, but this can be costly as a result of fees and
interest payments. For either of these options, Element Bars would almost always be rejected
because the company has very little assets or collateral.
Venture capital is another option for a start–up business, however, these types of companies tend to
invest more in high–growth potential companies like those in the technology industry. Miller could
also approach his corporate customers with a proposal for their investment. He could offer interest
in his company in exchange for capital. (Shein, 2011)
Miller could also look to his family

Target Market Profile of the Cocktail Mixer
Positioning Strategy Since this is a new product entering in the market, we will be depositioning
competing cocktail mixers. The question that we will be answering is what the product
differentiation is relative to the competition. The reason that our cocktail mixer will be differentiated
from all others is that everything the person needs will be put together in one kit, including
premeasured mix packets (better than refrigerated mixes because this can be taken on the go, like a
juice box) and a battery operated operated shaker with a detailed instruction book and 1 gigabyte
flash drive with hundreds of extra mix recipes. There will be 24/7 product support as well as online
support with online chat. The product difference will be everything is available in a fool–proof kit.

Anglos who speak American English without an accent. While not as cheap as Indian customer
service support, but the costs are cheaper than the U.S. and there are no accent or cultural problems.
Indeed, there are a number of the population who are from the British Isles. The British accent has
been proven to calm American anxieties and feel as though they are being lectured to by a person
who knows it all. A smattering of Irish and Scottish accents will make the drink calls interesting

Essay on Stock Market and Paramount
Case Study Questions –Paramount Communications Inc. 1993–
Why a paramount is a takeover target?
Several Strategic Reasons
– Cost reduction: through combinations of similar business and economy of scales
– Sales increase: a) cross–promotions of each company's brand and utilization of each company's
channels, and b) cooperation in international businesses.
2. Which of the two firms (Viacom or QVC) would make a better fit with Paramount?
–Viacom: Overlap in the business creates synergies regarding cost and revenue. However,
cannibalisation may happen in the near future.
–QVC: Small rooms for synergies (cost reductions may be limited to non–business section.).

7. Compare your valuation with Smith Barney's. What assumptions do you have to make to get the
terminal value EBITDA multiples used by Smith Barney. Is there any benefit of their method
relative to FCF method?
Smith Barney is using EBITDA of 14 to 16X. Since EBITDA multiple tends to revert to a certain
level over the year, we need to assume that the market will keep pricing the company at the same
level of 1993.
The merits of EBITDA multiples:
–They don't need to assume the perpetual growth rate which is hard to calibrate but has substantial
impact on pricing.
–They can ignore the capital structure change
–Easier to understand (it is "market consensus")
8. What doe 30% premium suggest? Is it reasonable?
30% of premium over the market price may be reasonable given;
a) control premium
b) the nature of takeover (it can be considered as "Insider Trading", and to avoid litigation by
shareholders, an acquirer may need to pay premium)
c) consideration of synergies through a takeover.

QVC: Focus In Customer Satisfaction
QVC launched in 1986 by Joseph Segel, and has since become the largest shopping network in
television. In 2013, a study or survey was conducted to show how QVC ranked in customer
satisfaction. Luckily they were among the top three. QVC is watched the most in the United States
in relative to the United Kingdom and Japan. QVC has had much success because they provided
their audience with unique and exclusive products that you simply could not resist. In addition to
their matchless products, they are also well known for being celeb–friendly. They frequently
incorporate fashion designers, authors, actors and other celebrities to promote and market their
products. QVC problems began when their audience needs shifted and overall the amount of people

The threat of substitutes are high because the consumer have many other options such as online
shopping or even traveling to malls and other retail stores. Especially since this whole buying and
shipping process takes time people may be more tempted to just walk into a store a get a similar
item without the additional costs. The competition is also very high with other networks such as
HSN or the home shopping network, shopNBC and other networks, QVC definitely has their work
cut out for them, but they definitely have what it takes to stay on top. The bargaining power of
supplier is also high. Like the threat of substitutes there are just an abundant of options to choose
from and not just one set supplier. This can be a good or bad thing as well. Now for the SWOT
analysis, the strengths include that they have the ability to have a variety, affordable prices and e–
commerce. The weaknesses are the people are not engaged in television anymore which leads to
reduced sales and shipping liabilities, mishaps with online. The opportunities that QVC may have is
to expand of the types of products they sell especially the products that appeal to their audience. The
threats are persistent technological developments. Less people have cable and watch TV, and even if
an individual has cable it is not certain they have QVC. The last main threat is that there are other

Slanket
SLANKET: RESPONDING TO SNUGGIE'S MARKET ENTRY
Even though Slanket counts with a much smaller promotional budget, it is clear that the company
wants to position itself as a better quality sleeved blanket following a long–term strategy that will
overcome fads and imitators.
As we can see in the Exhibit 3 provided by the case, Slanket was already ranked with 5 stars in
86,7% of the cases while Snuggie only got a 21,6% of 5 stars ratings. Furthermore, the product was
warmer, bigger and offered a wider variety of colors. So we can conclude that Slanket product
perception is already better and the main issues are to increase promotional investment and to better
canalize potential customers in order to increase market share. ... Show more content on

2. Positioning
Sleeved blankets are perceived as a product for "couch potatoes" and lonely people disloyal to the
American values. In addition to this perception, Slanket's website, as well as most of the content
uploaded on the Internet and many commercials, have an ironic and funny tone which make
customers embarrassed of admitting they like it.
I would strongly recommended Slanket to untie itself from this image and positioning by
remodeling their website and making commercials that would emphasize its better quality, wider
variety, and the social responsibility activities carried out by the company. Likewise, in order to
represent the American values, they should advertise in sport events, or use themes such as fishing,
hunting, BBQ's, or any collective activity.
Since customers are asking for improvements, and in order to differentiate Slankets from Snuggies,
they could introduce new materials for countries with different weathers, more colors, the option of
personalizing it with the customer's name, and the "couple Slanket", to share it and to get far from
the idea of loneliness that it is associated to the product.
3. Search engines and social media
It is clear that social media impact has been huge since the very first stages of the product. Slanket
should continue with its Facebook fan pages to generate word–of–mouth and brand awareness about
the new positioning of the product. It should encourage users to upload pictures of themselves

The Social Style Characteristics Of Class Can Play A Large...
The social style characteristics discussed in class can play a large role in this theory. For example, if
a salesperson with a "driver" personality attempts to sell appliances to an "amiable" personality the
sale may fail because the two lack familiarity. The "driver" may utilize technical reasoning with an
emotionless approach, which may scare away an amiable that is looking for a more personal
experience. Varying personality types can still form partnerships, the salesperson however must be
aware of this and change their approach. Today we often see indicators for likeability. How
interesting to examine the fixation of Princess Kate, yet we hardly ever hear about Camilla.
Although Camilla's husband is 1st in line for the thrown, and Kate's second, Kate has seemed to
establish the "halo effect" Cialdini refers to, in her case her striking beauty and poise allow us to
infer that she is also kind, smart, and a heroic figure of Great Britain. Cialdini discusses abiding duty
for authority that exist in humans in the 7th chapter. He exemplifies this concept through
examination of psychological experiments such as Milgram's "learners shock test" and the real
experiment of Mr. Wilson and the train that did not stop. Obligation to authority derives much of
human action, as Cialdini points out many examples are found in the bible in the most basic form.
Cialdini suggest that often this duty to authority derives from a quick unconscious decision that we

QVC Case Study Analysis
Abstract
The Quality Value Convenience Network (QVC) is one of the most dominating and leading
television–based retailers today. Potential customers tune in worldwide to QVC's shopping channel
every day to see what new and exciting products are on display for sale. Countries such as Germany,
Japan, Italy, United Kingdom, and Italy support QVC internationally. In pursuit of company growth,
QVC is working to build a solid relationship with China as well. QVC is a well–established, leading

Workplace Motivation: QVC
Workplace Motivation: QVC
Motivation is a psychological process that causes arousal, direction, and the persistence of voluntary
actions that are goal oriented (Ramlall, 2004). Lack of motivation is the main reason employees do
not remain with a company. Employee retention is critical for a company to remain successful. For
every 10 managerial and professional employees lost, an organization loses an average of $1 million
(Ramlall, 2004). With respect to QVC, it is the nation's largest electronic retailer, selling a wide
variety of merchandise that includes clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, electronics, housewares, and toys.
The company sells its products through cable and satellite television, QVC.com, in outlet centers,
and via a retail store in the Mall of America. In 2003, the company broadcasted live 24 hours a day,
364 days a year, to over 85 million homes across the United States, 11 million homes in the United
Kingdom, 34 million homes in Germany, and over eight million homes in Japan (Bloomberg, 2012).
QVC, which stands for "Quality, Value, and Convenience," grew quickly into an industry

Purchasing products from suppliers is unavoidable in the Best Buy industries. It would not be cost
effective for Best Buy to establish a specialty brand of products.
Conclusion
Unfortunately in the present day we are a culture that are not only more aware of the products we
chose to purchase but are able to enjoy the flexibility of shopping from home. Customers shopping
at Best Buy find themselves being "up–sold" instead of being "educated" on the products they are
considering purchasing. Customer service is lacking and store associates do not have the appropriate
product knowledge to satisfy customer questions. These are only a few concerns disrupting Best
Buy's position in the market today. Their dismal financial performance is a clear indication that
customers are choosing alternatives. Retail stores can be successful if given the right tools. Apple
stores are the perfect model to emulate. Apple provides a variety of sample products to navigate,
hires and trains their personnel on the products they offer, and exudes an ambiance that is
welcoming to the customer. Much like Lowe's, Apple offers classes to customer to gain the
knowledge necessary to operate their products in a fluent and enjoyable manner. The staff does not

Was Gaining Massive Productions, Such As “Iron Man 3” And
was gaining massive productions, such as "Iron Man 3" and "Homeland". This all changed in 2014
when state legislators chose to mostly abandon their tax credit program in lieu of using the money to
lower their corporate tax rates. Their film industry crashed almost overnight. Nearly all film
productions went to surrounding states like Louisiana and Georgia, leaving North Carolina filmless.
There have been efforts to rejuvenate the film industry, such as a 10 million film grant passed in
2015, however, many fear the damage is irreparable. Lowering the corporate tax rates, though a
great idea in of itself, is not a suitable replacement for the current film tax credit program due to the

The Pittsburgh Courier gives a great example of why this is. Think of it like this, if you had a
coupon for 10 dollars' worth of free food (this would be the tax credit) and then sold that coupon for
8 dollars of actual money. Because you saw the 8 dollars as more valuable than the 10 dollars' worth
of free food (since the coupon/tax credit isn't actual money, there is a loss of 2 dollars of value. Over
time, this has led to around 27 million dollars in tax payer's dollars to be lost, however, this number
doesn't mean tax credits shouldn't be sellable (Shoemaker; Holmberg).
As a matter of fact, they must be and it's in their nature. Lisa Smith–Reed, when I asked her about
the selling of tax credits, stated, "Every industry sells tax credits that they cannot use to other
companies whether or not that company is in their particular line of business." It's incredibly
difficult to use the entirety of a Pennsylvania tax credit when the film company awarded the credit
resides in a different state. In a way, the ability to sell the tax credit is more of an incentive to
productions than the tax credit itself. Dawn Keezer, in an interview with public source, went as far
to say that the selling of these tax credits is a boon, because not only does it bring productions to
Pennsylvania, it also helps corporations in Pennsylvania on their taxes, and since all these
companies (whether it is the film productions selling these tax credits, or the companies buying

Abstract
Spanx is a privately held intimate apparel company founded in 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia. The
founder of Spanx Sara Blakely took all of her $5000 life savings and began her company selling

Paramount Communications Inc. Question 1 Paramount is a takeover target because other firms see
synergy value associated with combining Paramount's assets and operations with their own.
Specifically, Paramount has several assets that complement other media companies. Value in the
media is generated through several different channels. As a media company, Paramount has a
presence in most of the entertainment sectors (see Exhibit 2). There seems to be a drive toward

Specifically, it would be able to reduce some of the content distribution and promotional costs.
Viacom and Paramount would also have some redundant/overlapping businesses that can be
consolidated. Depending on which one is performing better, the other one can be cut or sold off.
Economies of scale would also play a large part in reducing costs as overhead costs can be better
spread across. Due to cross promotion and distribution, Viacom can incite growth in Paramount.
Paramount's content would automatically be worth more based on new distribution channels.
Additionally, Viacom has plans to utilize Paramount's movie production competencies to produce
films such as Beavis and Butthead, which would due to their huge popularity almost certainly
generate growth and profit. If QVC purchased Paramount, some of the cost saving opportunities
would not necessarily be there based on the fact that the business are not as closely aligned.
However, there would be cost saving and growth opportunities through the new distribution
channels through TCI that Paramount could tap into. TCI has a huge cable network that would
create many new options for Paramount's content. Question 5 Due to the synergies (referenced in
questions 2 and 4), paramount is worth an additional $15.90 per share in addition to the WACC
value of $63.54 per share, for a total value to Viacom of $79.44 per share (see Exhibit 20). This
value represents a 25 percent premium to our WACC valuation.

QVC Shopping Channel vs. QVC.Com: Positioning For Future...
Qvc Shoping Channel Versus Qvc.Com Positioning For Future Growth Name Professor Institution
Course Date Qvc Shopping Channel versus Qvc.Com Positioning For Future Growth Introduction
Qvc is a shopping channel where sellers are able to get the chance of addressing consumers through
television. Through Qvc, sellers get the chance of choosing the best television channel to use in
order to meet large market coverage. This means that the sellers choose television channels that
have a wide coverage area and which most consumers watch. One of the advantages of Qvc is that it
has managed to gain a significant number of customers since its development in 1986. Qvc.com is
also an advertisement tool that reaches its customers through a website. However, the main problem
that tends to affect the operations of the Qvc.com is that shopping on television seems to offer more
competition on its operations. This means that many of the consumers tend to get several of the
advertisement on shopping channels rather than Qvc. Various reasons led to the development of
QVC in becoming one of the advertising industries. One of these is that the founding managers were
able to make a considerable research concerning the strengths and weaknesses of the company. They
also managed to learn from the mistakes that other companies in the advertising industries have
managed to go through. In order to excel in the advertisement sector, QVC shopping channel

Swot Analysis Of Qvc
QVC was launched in 1986 by Jason Segel to rival the existing Home Shopping Network (Dess,
McNamara, & Eisner, 2016). Segel strived to create a family friendly network that sold
sophisticated goods. Within the first year of business, QVC was televised in over 13 million homes
and served 700,000 customers. As a result, 300 million products were shipped from the West
Chester, Pennsylvania headquarters and produced over $100 million in sales. By 2014, QVC
surpassed its competitors and served over 300 million homes around the world (Dess, McNamara, &
Eisner, 2016). QVC is now the world's largest home shopping firm followed by the Home Shopping
Network (Dess, McNamara, & Eisner, 2016). Through research, development, and marketing, QVC
successfully sells "over 170 million products annually" (Dess, McNamara, & Eisner, 2016, p.C179).
QVC uses a variety of strategies to grow and expand the company be selling a variety of products
such as: name brand jewelry, kitchen gadgets, celebrity endorsed products, home goods, personal
products and novelty items (Dess, McNamara, & Eisner, 2016).
Business Strategy Analysis
Segel created QVC after viewing the Home Shopping Network. He was motivated to improve upon
an already great idea by enhancing the viewer experience and refining the products sold (Dess,
McNamara, & Eisner, 2016). Segel felt that the televised shopping industry was a strong market
because there were few competitors and because low expenses wouldn't impact profits.

Analysis Of Mindy Grossman 's An Emotionally Intelligent...
Mindy Grossman: An Emotionally Intelligent Leader
Emotional intelligence is a phrase used in the business world to explain one's competency in
displaying and handling one's own emotions as well as the emotions of others around him or her. In
his book, Working With Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman explains the importance of
Emotional Intelligence and how it is more imperative for one to have high Emotional Intelligence
rather than a high IQ. This is because, no matter how talented someone may be in their line of work,
he or she must still be able to work well with others and express their ideas. Goleman categorizes
Emotional Intelligence into five emotional elements and then further into emotional competencies.

been spent as VP, President and CEO of companies including Chaps Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren

CEO of HSN, Inc. she has displayed immense Emotional Intelligence and because of that, was able
to transform the company. Grossman displays a wide array of emotional competencies spanning all
of the five emotional elements as described by Goleman: self–awareness, self–regulation,
motivation, empathy and social skills.
An area of Emotional Intelligence where Grossman thrives is her excelled self–awareness. Goleman
describes self–awareness as "knowing one's internal states, preferences, resources and institutions"
(Working With Emotional Intelligence, 26). In other words, it is one's ability to introspectively
assess his or her strengths and weaknesses. Further, Goleman categorizes emotional awareness,
accurate self–assessment, and self–confidence within self–awareness. Self–awareness is a critical
competence to display because it is one's ability to know him or herself. Without understanding
oneself, it would be impossible to know how to improve or which areas to improve. Similarly,

The threat of substitution is a big deal in this industry. Most retail stores carry the same types of

similarities with Paramount as compared to QVC.
3. VALUE PARAMOUNT AS A STAND‐ALONE COMPANY USING BOTH THE APV AND
WACC METHOD.
After making assumptions about various valuation metrics and figures, we were able to value
paramount as a stand–alone company using both the APV and WACC methods.
Our base case valuation (APV) was $46.11 per share
Our base case valuation (WACC) was $40.92 per share
Our assumptions and calculations leading up to these valuations are outlined in our exhibits 1
through 5.
We have specified the sources of our assumptions in exhibit 1, with a detailed segment on
assumptions that might require further reasoning.
4. AFTER VALUING PARAMOUNT, COMPARE YOUR VALUATION TO THE MARKET
PRICE. ARE THEY SIMILAR? IF NOT, HOW CAN YOU RECONCILE THEM?
Upon arriving at $46.11 (APV) and $40.92 (WACC) valuations for Paramount, we noticed that these
valuations were at a discount to the market price of $55.50.
Our reconciliation for this undervaluation is that the market is already pricing in a takeover. Some
evidence of this can be demonstrated by the 1.0 beta of paramount. If we look at the 1992 Q1 to
August 30 1993 returns of S&P500 and PCI, PCI is +30.6% and S&P500 is +14.6%, which implies
an approximate

  • 3. The Evolution Of Mass Media Developments in Mass Media Ryan Lavin HUM/186 October 30, 2017 Allyson Wells Developments in Mass Media Media has a large influence on how people live their lives. The different media that developed in the last century provide entertainment, relevant information, and influence what we buy and how we act. Some of the significant developments in the evolution of mass media during the last century include Film, Radio, Television, and the Internet. Evolution of Mass Media Film first appeared in the early 1900's and comprised of short films (no more than 30 minutes) that gave entertainment to viewers in Nickelodeon's or storefronts that charged a nickel for admission (American Movie Classics Company, LLC, 2017). It wasn't until the 1910's that "full–length" feature films were developed and Nickelodeons began to give way to movie theatres. In the late 1920's sound was added into movies and by the mid–1930's "silent" films were no longer produced (American Movie Classics Company, LLC, 2017). Adding sound in films allowed viewers to have a deeper connection with the stories being told. The "previews" that were shown before the movie also were used as a source of news, even showing footage during World War II. Another media that came into commercialization during this time was the Radio. The first radio station to go on air was KDKA in Pittsburgh in November of 1920 (Gugliotta, 2007). Dan Wheeler is a favorite of QVC shoppers and they were elated to see him return. One of Dan's last broadcasts from the shopping network was on September 17. • 11. Joan Rivers Character Traits The legendary American actress and television host Joan Rivers lived on in this year's Grammy Awards, after she nabbed a posthumous award under the best spoken word album category, Page Six reported. It was her work "Diary of a Mad Diva" which cinched her win, and her former fellow Fashion Police co–hosts received the award in her honor. It was a heart–warming and tear–jerking spectacle as Kelly Osbourne got all choked up as she congratulated and thanked her co–worker and friend on stage. It was Rivers' first win at the Grammys. She was previously nominated way back in 1984 for her comedy album, "What Becomes a Semi–Legend Most?" After the award, her daughter Melissa Rivers dropped by the Red Carpet and E! host Giuliana Rancic asked how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's a little bittersweet," she said. "But it's wonderful how loved she was and how she's getting so much attention now." Rivers started her glory days by making appearances in plays and comedy clubs, then later making a guest appearance at The Tonight Show, which was then hosted by Jack Paar. She was an unstoppable comedic genius, which is probably why New York Times television critic Jack Gould, who passed away in 2013 described her as "quite possibly the most intuitively funny woman alive" back in 1968. Throughout her career, Rivers would dabble in plays, movies and talk shows, either as an actress, writer, or host. Rivers was nominated in 1994 for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance in Sally Marr...and her escorts. She gained further fame and recognition after she began co–hosting the E! Celebrity show called Fashion Police from 2010 to 2014. She was well–known for her fearless tact and opinionated views. This probably lead her to market a line of jewelry and apparel on he QVC shopping channel. Strengths Strengths Jonathan Miller is the founder and owner of the company called Element Bars. He has a professional background in venture capital, which means that he has experience with entrepreneurial endeavors and they risk they entail. Miller has successfully started other businesses in the past, beginning his entrepreneurial career in 1999. The skills he gained during these endeavors has won him a widely–recognized business plan award, as well as the money to start Element Bars. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The company's business model is comprised of 80% sales from online orders from individual customers, and 20% from wholesale orders from corporate customers such as gyms, hotels, spas, and wellness centers. Individual customers generally buy one to three dozen bars at a time, while the corporate customers tend to buy in bulk then resell the co–branded bar. (Element Bars, n.d.) Currently, there are very few competitors in the energy bar market that offer the same unique value proposition as Element Bars. As Miller points out in the case, there are few companies that are able to produce at the small (individual) scale that his company can. One of the first options that an entrepreneur will explore for financing is debt, usually through a bank loan. Before appearing on Shark Tank, Miller applied for a $40,000 business loan, but was rejected. Another financing option is a line of credit, but this can be costly as a result of fees and interest payments. For either of these options, Element Bars would almost always be rejected because the company has very little assets or collateral. Venture capital is another option for a start–up business, however, these types of companies tend to invest more in high–growth potential companies like those in the technology industry. Miller could also approach his corporate customers with a proposal for their investment. He could offer interest in his company in exchange for capital. (Shein, 2011) Miller could also look to his family ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 2013, a study or survey was conducted to show how QVC ranked in customer satisfaction. Luckily they were among the top three. QVC is watched the most in the United States in relative to the United Kingdom and Japan. QVC has had much success because they provided their audience with unique and exclusive products that you simply could not resist. The competition is also very high with other networks such as HSN or the home shopping network, shopNBC and other networks, QVC definitely has their work cut out for them, but they definitely have what it takes to stay on top. The bargaining power of supplier is also high. Like the threat of substitutes there are just an abundant of options to choose from and not just one set supplier. As we can see in the Exhibit 3 provided by the case, Slanket was already ranked with 5 stars in 86,7% of the cases while Snuggie only got a 21,6% of 5 stars ratings. In addition to this perception, Slanket's website, as well as most of the content uploaded on the Internet and many commercials, have an ironic and funny tone which make customers embarrassed of admitting they like it. I would strongly recommended Slanket to untie itself from this image and positioning by remodeling their website and making commercials that would emphasize its better quality, wider variety, and the social responsibility activities carried out by the company. Likewise, in order to represent the American values, they should advertise in sport events, or use themes such as fishing, hunting, BBQ's, or any collective activity. Since customers are asking for improvements, and in order to differentiate Slankets from Snuggies, they could introduce new materials for countries with different weathers, more colors, the option of personalizing it with the customer's name, and the "couple Slanket", to share it and to get far from the idea of loneliness that it is associated to the product. 3. For example, if a salesperson with a "driver" personality attempts to sell appliances to an "amiable" personality the sale may fail because the two lack familiarity.
