A man asks Jesus to settle a family dispute over an inheritance. Jesus refuses, saying he was not appointed as a judge. He warns against greed and covetousness, saying one's life is not defined by material possessions. Jesus then tells a parable about a rich man with a bountiful harvest who plans to expand his barns to store more. Thinking he is set for life, the man brags about relaxing, but God says the man is a fool for not being rich toward God, as he dies that night. The parable teaches that true riches are not material but spiritual.

3. 13Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother
to divide the inheritance with me.” 14But He said to him, “Man, who
made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” 15And He said to
them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not
consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” 16Then He
spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man
yielded plentifully. 17“And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What
shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18“So he said, ‘I
will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I
will store all my crops and my goods. 19‘And I will say to my soul,
“Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease;
eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20“But God said to him, ‘Fool! This
night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things
be which you have provided?’ 21“So is he who lays up treasure for
himself, and is not rich toward God.”

6. He wants Jesus to resolve a family dispute over
an inheritance!
Luke 12:13... “Then one from the crowd
said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to

20. This man believes that life consists of the
things one has.
The crops were his...
He believed that these would give
him many more years of life...

21. 1. He did not know he was a mortal.
2. He did not know the he would not live
many years.
3. He does not consider that riches really
can’t satisfy his soul.

22. He does not consider the needs of others.
He thinks only of himself.

23. He did not glorify God!!!
For all practical purposes, he is an Atheist! He
mentions many things, the plans are to re-build,
store, eat, drink, have fun, and he never mentions
God in his life nor in his plans....100% ATHEIST!

24. Luke 12:21...“So is he who lays up
treasure for himself, and is not rich
toward God.”

26. There is nothing wrong with
planning...The error comes here:
James 4:13-16... “Come now, you who say, “Today
or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend
a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;
14whereas you do not know what will happen
tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that
appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
15Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we
shall live and do this or that.” 16But now you boast in
your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17Therefore,
to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to
him it is sin.
