Practical and Biblical Arguments Against Materialism

Materialism prevents or destroys our spiritual life. You say, “I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.” But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich ; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Revelation 3:17-18

There was once in man a true happiness of which there now remain to him only the mark and empty trace, which he in vain tries to fill from all his surroundings , seeking from things absent the help he does not obtain in things present. But these are all inadequate , because the infinite abyss can only be filled by an infinite and immutable object , that is to say, only by God Himself . Blaise Pascal

You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, but for a whole month— until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it — because you have rejected the LORD , who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?” Numbers 11:18-20

Matthew 6:25-34 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink ; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food , and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air ; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?...

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry , saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?”…

For the pagans run after all these things , and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness , and all these things will be given to you as well . Therefore do not worry about tomorrow , for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:25-34

Materialism always ends in futility.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 I thought in my heart, “ Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. “ Laughter,” I said, “is foolish . And what does pleasure accomplish ?” I tried cheering myself with wine , and embracing folly —my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives….

I undertook great projects : I built houses for myself and planted vineyards . I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them … I amassed silver and gold for myself , and the treasure of kings and provinces . I acquired men and women singers , and a harem as well—the delights of the heart of man. I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me.…

I denied myself nothing my eyes desired ; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless , a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:1-11

Advertising’s job: Persuade you that you need what you really don’t; that you’ll be satisfied with what can’t satisfy. Study: “Six months after winning lottery, winners were no happier than if paralyzed in a car crash.”

Ecclesiastes 5:10-15 The More You Have… Whoever loves money never has money enough. The more you have, the more you want.

Whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. The more you have, the less you’re satisfied.

As goods increase, so do those who consume them. The more you have, the more people (including the government) come after it.

And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? The more you have, the more you realize it doesn’t meet your real needs.

The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep. The more you have, the more you have to worry about.

I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner The more you have, the more you can hurt yourself with it. or wealth lost through some misfortune. The more you have, the more you have to lose.

Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb; as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor he can carry in his hand. The more you have, the more you have to leave behind.

Wealth often leads to pride and arrogance—and rejection of God

When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey , the land I promised on oath to their forefathers, and when they eat their fill and thrive , they will turn to other gods and worship them, rejecting me and breaking my covenant . Deuteronomy 31:20

Jeshurun [Israel] grew fat and kicked; filled with food, he became heavy and sleek. He abandoned the God who made him and rejected the Rock his Savior . They made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols…. Deuteronomy 32:15-16

But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God , and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. 2 Chronicles 26:16

Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me—those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches ? Psalm 49:5-6

Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!” Psalm 52:7

But I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt. You shall acknowledge no God but me , no Savior except me. I cared for you in the desert, in the land of burning heat. When I fed them, they were satisfied ; when they were satisfied, they became proud ; then they forgot me. Hosea 13:4-6

John Wesley Wherever true Christianity spreads, it must cause diligence and frugality, which, in the natural course of things, must beget riches! And riches naturally beget pride , love of the world, and every temper that is destructive of Christianity….

Now, if there be no way to prevent this, Christianity is inconsistent with itself and, of consequence, cannot stand, cannot continue long among any people; since, wherever it generally prevails, it saps its own foundation . John Wesley

For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not ? 1 Corinthians 4:7

Materialism fosters immorality and the deterioration of the family. Materialism distracts us from our central purpose.

The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it , making it unfruitful. Matthew 13:22

John 2:13-17 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money . So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle ;

he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables …. To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!” His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” John 2:13-17

Acts 8 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

Peter answered: “ May your money perish with you , because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money ! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. Acts 8:18-21

Prosperity Theology: Health and Wealth Gospel

Old Testament and Prosperity Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him . The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy . He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him. Genesis 26:12-14

The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered , and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did , Joseph found favor in his eyes… Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned…. Genesis 39:2-6

Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both riches and honor —so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. 1 Kings 3:13

The LORD made Job prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before . The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first. He had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen and 1,000 donkeys. And he also had seven sons and three daughters.….After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation . And so he died, old and full of years . Job 42

Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. Deuteronomy 15:10

Deuteronomy 8 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you . Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God , failing to observe his commands… Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied , when you build fine houses and settle down, when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have

is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God , who brought you out of the land of slavery. He led you through the vast and dreadful desert… He brought you water out of hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the desert… to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you …. Deuteronomy 8:7-18

Deuteronomy 28 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, then the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.

The fruit of your womb will be blessed , and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock… Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out…. The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to . The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity… The LORD will open the heavens,

the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. … The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, then you will always be at the top , never at the bottom… However, if you do not obey the all these curses will come upon you and overtake you... Deuteronomy 28:1-14

I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in its native soil. Psalm 37:35 The other side of the wealth and blessing paradox:

I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked .…This is what the wicked are like—always carefree, they increase in wealth . Psalm 73:3, 12

In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: a righteous man perishing in his righteousness, and a wicked man living long in his wickedness . Ecclesiastes 7:15

You are always righteous, O Lord, when I bring a case before you. Yet I would speak with you about your justice: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease? Jeremiah 12:1

His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “ Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life .” John 9:2-3
