Recently browsers have been introduced with interesting tools for work with binary stream of data. Technologies like XHR2 and File API allow us to fetch binary blobs from urls and the file system, and from there, a whole new world is opened before us: we can use Media Source Extensions to implement live streaming audio/video protocols like DASH and HLS, WebRTC to transmit data P2P bittorrent style, WebGL to draw shapes from arrays of binary position data, and more. Furthermore, using technologies like asm.js and tools like Emscripten to transpile C++ code to JavaScript, we can do amazing things with all of the above, and achieve superior performance. In this talk we'll explore some of these techniques, and learn about how we are solving interesting problems with them.

Traditionally, companies requiring high-quality graphic desktops for their users are required to invest heavily in on-premises infrastructure. Media and entertainment customers continue to develop hybrid (on-premises to cloud) rendering as well as supply chain pipelines. Companies have leveraged cloud compute elasticity and economies of scale to deliver projects on time and under budget, but what about the user desktops? Enable on-demand "graphics and video editing" users on the desktop as easily as burst EC2 cloud compute. Hire the best talent, regardless of location or time zone, while only streaming secure pixels to a user's desktop. In this hands-on session, attendees explore the technical schema and underlying architecture of this solution and then individually build a working Windows and Linux graphics desktop based on the NVIDIA powered G3 EC2 instance type. All attendees must bring their own laptop (Windows and macOS are supported). Tablets are not appropriate. We also recommend having the current version of Chrome or Firefox and the AWS CLI already installed.

Building GUI App with Electron and Lisp
This document discusses how an electronics payment company called Pocket Change built their GUI application using Common Lisp instead of JavaScript. They used the Electron framework, which normally uses JavaScript, but modified it to use Common Lisp instead. They spawned a Common Lisp process that communicates bidirectionally with the Electron processes using JSON-RPC over WebSockets. This allows the GUI code to be written in JavaScript as normal for Electron, while moving all the business logic to Common Lisp for improved testability and organization.

Analyze Virtual Machine Overhead Compared to Bare Metal with Tracing
The document compares the performance of running a MySQL database benchmark (Sysbench) on virtual machines versus bare metal machines. On Fedora, the benchmark achieved 6-7% higher transactions per second, queries per second, and lower latency when run on the bare metal host compared to the virtual machine guest. Similarly, on Debian, the benchmark achieved significantly higher transactions per second (over 500 vs under 80) and lower latency when run on bare metal. Namespaces partition kernel resources like processes, networking, users and filesystems to isolate containers. Cgroups limit and account for resource usage like CPU and memory. AUFS provides a union filesystem that allows containers to use a read-only root filesystem image while also having read-write layers for changes. Together these technologies provide lightweight virtualization that is faster and more resource efficient than virtual machines.

CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on Blockchain

Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
