Notes: Paleolithic Age/Early Humans- pgs 8-11
Key Question: What was a Paleolithic person like?
Tools:
 Archaeologists use artifacts as clues for early human life
Hunters & Gatherers:
 Early humans spent most of their time searching for food
 Hunted animals, caught fish and ate insects- the men did this
 Gathered nuts, berries, fruits, grains and plants- women did this
 People were nomads- they moved from place to place regularly.
Adapting to the Environment:
 The way people lived depended on where they lived
 A life-changing discovery was taming fire
o It was life-changing because it gave warmth, light, food tasted betterand were
able to smoke meat, which last longer
Ice Ages:
 Were long periods of extreme cold
o Fire was the key to survival
 Ice Ages were a threat to human life
o Risked hunger- they had to change their diet
o Cold & Snow- they built sturdiershelter from animal-skin
o Used Animal-fur for clothing
Language, Art & Religion:
 Spoken language began
o Made it easier to work together and pass on knowledge
 Began to use art as well
o Had cave drawings to pass on knowledge
Invention of Tools:
 1st people to use technology
 Started with hitting flint with a hard stone to make axes and hunting spears
 Began to make smaller tools as well
o Fish hooks and needles
 Needles help to make nets, baskets and clothing
