Part 1: Monochromatic Colors in Layers
Step One: Choose a color
of your choice from the
tube of acrylics in your kit.
         First mix it with
         black
         Second place a
         small amount of the
         original color
         straight from the
         tube
         Finally mix the
         original color with
         white.
You should now have three
monochromatic colors.
Step 2: Paint each of the
mixed colors in each of the
respective circles from
lightest to darkest, as
shown to the right.

You will have to be
continually rinsing your
brush with water and
drying it with a paper towel
as you switch colors.
Step 3:Paint the base of
each square with your
darkest color.At this point it
is not necessary to
concentrate on brush
strokes.This is just going to
be your background
color.Pay attention to
staying within the lines. If
you can’t stay within the
lines for this simple square
then you will find it very
difficult when you are
painting irregular trees in
your landscape painting.
Step 4 a:With your second
layeron one of the squares
you are to create short
horizontal brush strokes
with the medium color.
You should allow some of
the base color to show
through the brush strokes.

Step 4 b:With your second
layeron the second square
you are to create short
curved brush strokes with
the medium color. You
should allow some of the
base color to show through
the brush strokes.

Step 5:For the third and
final layer you are to repeat
step two but now use the
lightest color creating a
flow and texture allowing
the underneath layers to
show through.
For the second square you
are to repeat the same
steps as done above but
this time with curved
strokes.

Part 2: Same as Part 1 but with Analogous Colors
Step 1: Choose three
analogous colors. Remember
that analogous colors are
colors that are beside each
other on the color wheel. Like
Yellow, Orange, and Red. You
may have to mix two colors
from your tubes of colors that
you have to choose from to
get three analogous colors.
Step 2: Paint each of the
mixed colors in each of the
respective circles from lightest
to darkest, as shown to the
right.
You will have to be continually
rinsing your brush with water
and drying it with a paper
towel as you switch colors.

Step 3: Paint the base of each
square with your darkest
color. At this point it is not
necessary to concentrate on
brush strokes. This is just
going to be your background
color. Pay attention to staying
within the lines. If you can’t
stay within the lines for this
simple square then you will
find it very difficult when you
are painting irregular trees in
your landscape painting.
Step 4 a:With your second
layeron one of the squares you
are to create short horizontal
brush strokes with the
medium color. You should
allow some of the base color
to show through the brush
strokes.
Step 4 b:With your second
layeron the second square you
are to create short curved
brush strokes with the
medium color. You should
allow some of the base color
to show through the brush
strokes.
Step 5: For the third and final
layer you are to repeat step
two but now use the lightest
color creating a flow and
texture allowing the
underneath layers to show
through.
