Pain is an uncomfortable sensation that stems from activation of the nervous system and serves to protect the body. It can be localized to a specific part of the body and described as stabbing, burning, twisting or squeezing. There are different types of pain including acute pain which is sudden and sharp from injuries or illnesses, chronic pain which lasts for months or years from conditions like arthritis, and neuropathic pain which results from nerve damage caused by injuries or illnesses.

and maintain homeostasis.

• It is often described in terms of a penetrating or tissue
destructive process e.g., stabbing, burning, twisting,tearing,
squeezing.

5. Acute pain?
• Short period of time
• Suddenly, sharp, rather than dull
• Injuries : cuts, burns, muscle strains, bone fractures
• Illnesses : strep throat, appendicitis
• Medical procedures : injections, dental work, surgery

6. Chronic pain?
• Comes and goes over multiple months or years.
• Condition: arthritis, migraine, cancer, fibromyalgia
• Psycogenic pain or psychosomatic pain
• Psychological factor: stress, anxiety, depression
• Pain like: aching, burning, shooting, squeezing, stiffness,
stinging, throbbing.

7. Nociceptive pain?
• Tissue damage : cuts, burns, bruises, fractures
• Tissue inflammation and damage : arthritis, osteoporosis, IBD
• Develops in your skin, muscles, ligaments, tendons, joins,
bones
• feel achy, throbbing, sharp

8. Neuropathic pain?
• Nerve damage
• caused by a variety of injuries and illnesses
• ex, neuropathic pain if one of the disc in your spine slips out of
place and puts pressure on a nerve.
• illnesses such as shingles, DM, multiple sclerosis, cancer
• feel like a stabbing, shooting, burning, prickling

9. Drug
• Short term pain: paracetamol
• Inflammation and swelling : aspirin, ibuprofen and diclofenac
• Severe pain : morphine, codeine, hydrocodone
