Introduction:
 Wrapping material around a consumer item that serves to
contain, identify, describe, protect, display, promote and
otherwise make the product marketable and keep it
clean.
 Packaging is more than just your product's pretty face.
 Brand recognition occurs when a customer can identify a
brand by it’s attributes.
 Modern produce packaging can be custom engineered
for each commodity to extend shelf life and reduce
waste.
Types of Packing:
Challenges & Drivers:
Innovation:
 It is a significant positive change. It's a result. It's an outcome. It's
something you work towards achieving on a project. If you are
successful at solving important problems, peers you respect will call
your work innovative and you an innovator.
 Business has only two functions – Marketing & Innovation.
 Types of Innovations
 Incremental Innovations
 Breakthrough Innovations
 Radical Innovations
Incremental Innovations:
 Upgrades made to a company's existing products, services, processes or
methods focused on improving product efficiency, productivity and
competitive differentiation.
 Below are the few examples
 Ice Cream Wrappers:
• From Paper to Plastic ( Polyester + Pearlized Bopp)
 E-Books
 Eco Friendly.
 Easy to access at any point of time.
 Cost is comparatively less
 Chocolate Wrappers:
 From Metpet Wrapper to Pillow pouches ( Polyester + Met Cpp )
 Increases Shelf Life from 6 months to 12 months.
 Productivity increases.
Breakthrough Innovations:
 Updating the product in process according to the marketing needs in existing
product, service, or process that has a significant impact on the business and
customer satisfaction.
 Below are the few examples
 Zipper Lock Pouches:
 Easy to open.
 Reuse of the package several times without
affecting the inside product with external factors.
 Packing material wt. is comparatively low.
 Yogurt Cups:
 Shelf life increases up to 10 days
 Safe & sustainable
 Easy storage.
 Huge impact in Dairy industries.
 Kissan Jam :
 Easy to open.
 Weight less & unbreakable.
 Seaweed Water Packets:
 A start-up Company called Ohoo introduced this Seaweed water packet in
London in mid of 2017.
 Eco-Friendly, 0% plastic.
 Seaweed are forms of algae that grow in the sea.
 Seaweed is used as outer layer to pack the water. Nasty taste of membrane
while having water.
 Seaweed consists of iron, which is more than our requirement of body. Which
caused Thyroid effects.
 Project currently re-examining to check the possibilities to reduce the iodine
content in the seaweed.
Radical Innovations:
 Invention that destroys or supplants an existing business model.
 It blows up the existing system or process and replaces it with something
entirely new.
 Kinder Joy:
 Smart Packing to attract customers in first sight.
 Surprises to attract kids
 Joint innovation of Ferrero + Kinder brand of products.
 Received Nielsen's Breakthrough Innovation award in
the year of 2016.
 Vento Pouch – Amcor:
 It allows coffee producers to capture the flavour and aroma of freshly roasted
coffee without hard valves
 Advanced packaging system with built-in venting control.
 freshness is key thing and to deliver full flavour to consumers
 coffee producers prefer to package their product right after roasting.
 Currently the solution for degassing freshly roasted coffee is to apply hard valves
that allow carbon dioxide (CO2) to escape the pack.
 This includes machine, man power & time which involves more cost.
 It will only allow CO2 to escape from inside, it won’t allow air from outside.
 It is up to 87% lighter weight than hard valves
Vento Roasted Coffee Packing :
Research Methods:
 It is a way to systematically and logically solve a problem, help
us understand the process, and analyzes methods in addition to the
information obtained by them.
 Systemized effort to gain new knowledge.
 Data is the key for this.
Types of Research Methods:
 Quantitative Method:
 It is a stimulating and highly educational technique to gather information from
existing and potential customers using sampling methods.
 Qualitative Method:
 It is a scientific method of observation to gather non-numerical data. It provides
insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential
quantitative research.
 Mixed Method:
 It is a methodology for conducting research that involves collecting, analyzing and
integrating quantitative and qualitative research.

Packaging Innovations & Research Methods

  • 1. PACKAGING INNOVATIONS & RESEARCH METHODS By HarshaVardhan K PG Student, IIP Hyderabad.

Introduction:  Wrapping material around a consumer item that serves to contain, identify, describe, protect, display, promote and otherwise make the product marketable and keep it clean.  Packaging is more than just your product's pretty face.  Brand recognition occurs when a customer can identify a brand by it’s attributes.  Modern produce packaging can be custom engineered for each commodity to extend shelf life and reduce waste.
  • 5. Innovation:  It is a significant positive change. It's a result. It's an outcome. It's something you work towards achieving on a project. If you are successful at solving important problems, peers you respect will call your work innovative and you an innovator.  Business has only two functions – Marketing & Innovation.  Types of Innovations  Incremental Innovations  Breakthrough Innovations  Radical Innovations

Incremental Innovations:  Upgrades made to a company's existing products, services, processes or methods focused on improving product efficiency, productivity and competitive differentiation.  Below are the few examples  Ice Cream Wrappers: • From Paper to Plastic ( Polyester + Pearlized Bopp)
  • 7.  E-Books  Eco Friendly.  Easy to access at any point of time.  Cost is comparatively less  Chocolate Wrappers:  From Metpet Wrapper to Pillow pouches ( Polyester + Met Cpp )  Increases Shelf Life from 6 months to 12 months.  Productivity increases.

Breakthrough Innovations:  Updating the product in process according to the marketing needs in existing product, service, or process that has a significant impact on the business and customer satisfaction.  Below are the few examples  Zipper Lock Pouches:  Easy to open.  Reuse of the package several times without affecting the inside product with external factors.  Packing material wt. is comparatively low.
  • 9.  Yogurt Cups:  Shelf life increases up to 10 days  Safe & sustainable  Easy storage.  Huge impact in Dairy industries.
  • 10.  Kissan Jam :  Easy to open.  Weight less & unbreakable.  Seaweed Water Packets:  A start-up Company called Ohoo introduced this Seaweed water packet in London in mid of 2017.  Eco-Friendly, 0% plastic.  Seaweed are forms of algae that grow in the sea.  Seaweed is used as outer layer to pack the water. Nasty taste of membrane while having water.  Seaweed consists of iron, which is more than our requirement of body. Which caused Thyroid effects.  Project currently re-examining to check the possibilities to reduce the iodine content in the seaweed.

Radical Innovations:  Invention that destroys or supplants an existing business model.  It blows up the existing system or process and replaces it with something entirely new.  Kinder Joy:  Smart Packing to attract customers in first sight.  Surprises to attract kids  Joint innovation of Ferrero + Kinder brand of products.  Received Nielsen's Breakthrough Innovation award in the year of 2016.
  • 13.  Vento Pouch – Amcor:  It allows coffee producers to capture the flavour and aroma of freshly roasted coffee without hard valves  Advanced packaging system with built-in venting control.  freshness is key thing and to deliver full flavour to consumers  coffee producers prefer to package their product right after roasting.  Currently the solution for degassing freshly roasted coffee is to apply hard valves that allow carbon dioxide (CO2) to escape the pack.  This includes machine, man power & time which involves more cost.  It will only allow CO2 to escape from inside, it won’t allow air from outside.  It is up to 87% lighter weight than hard valves

  • 15. Research Methods:  It is a way to systematically and logically solve a problem, help us understand the process, and analyzes methods in addition to the information obtained by them.  Systemized effort to gain new knowledge.  Data is the key for this.
  • 16. Types of Research Methods:  Quantitative Method:  It is a stimulating and highly educational technique to gather information from existing and potential customers using sampling methods.  Qualitative Method:  It is a scientific method of observation to gather non-numerical data. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research.  Mixed Method:  It is a methodology for conducting research that involves collecting, analyzing and integrating quantitative and qualitative research.
