The document summarizes the green infrastructure strategies used at the Olympic Park in London. It discusses how the park was planned with sustainability in mind from the beginning, with goals to reduce water and waste, protect biodiversity, and create a large new urban park. Strategies like sustainable drainage systems, recycling demolition materials, and habitat restoration were used. The result was that the park exceeded its sustainability targets and transformed formerly industrial land into 100 hectares of parklands, providing environmental, social, and economic benefits for London into the future.

The Portland office of Kittelson & Associates, Inc. hosted an interactive workshop on January 13th, 2011 that covered the following related to Road Safety Audits (RSA): 1) A brief overview of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) “Road Safety Audit (RSA) – Guidelines and Checklist”; and 2) A walk through of a recent RSA application - Mt. Hood Highway (US 26) on the western slope between Portland, Oregon and the Mt. Hood recreational facilities (including ski areas during winter season). Hermanus Steyn, from Kittelson, and Sue D’Agnese, from ODOT, facilitated the workshop.
unique opportunity to revitalise the Lower Lea Valley,
transforming one of the most underdeveloped areas of London
The project is about harnessing this potential to create one of the largest new urban parks in Europe for 150 years.
In addition to world-class facilities for sports including athletics, cycling, hockey, swimming and tennis, there will be homes for a new community, and green spaces in and around the Olympic Park

Howard Wood - Presentation at The Sustainable Green Infrastructure Conference...Green Social Engineering
Howard Wood, Director of Landscape & Sustainable Services Ltd, after graduating in Environmental Sciences in 1979, has been leading initiatives in Sustainable Landscape Management in Europe and the UK for over 35 years.
In 2002 the Lyon City Parks Department commissioned Howard to deliver a sustainable practice training programme for their 300 gardeners and technicians. This resulted in environmentally friendly solutions being applied to existing maintenance operations and a significant reduction on the park’s operational budget. Howard has featured in television documentaries in France speaking about ecological dynamics and Green Infrastructure and speaks at conferences throughout Europe. Howard has been working on projects in Tunisia, Morocco and the Ivory Coast and presented a Sustainable Landscape Management Strategy to the City of Lisbon.
In 2010 Howard carried out a first ever carbon audit for a City Park in the UK which not only looked at its carbon footprint but compared it with carbon sequestration in trees, shrubs, grasses and topsoil. BAM Nuttall requested Howard to carry out field experiments on urban flower mixes for the London 2012 Olympic Park. Current themes of work include Urban Meadow flower displays in the UK and research on Carbon Sequestration in grass varieties with DLF France.
Paul Roebuck, one of our London based ecologists, takes you through some basics on green infrastructure in the UK and highlights some really interesting projects we have worked on and exciting future developments.
The slides cover legislation, mitigation, habitat creation, ecology impact assessments and green roofs and walls.
This presentation highlights the importance of Roadspace Allocation within transport planning and illustrates how to develop a successful Roadspace Allocation Framework. Further to this the presentation gives an insight to understanding and meeting user requirements. It then progresses to utilise various case studies in Birmingham to further demonstrate how these frameworks can be put into practice.
This presentation was delivered by Peter Jones from University College London on 2nd October 2015 and highlighted the importance of considering Link and Place when improving street design.

15. London 2012 Pre Games Sustainability Report, April 2012
Sustainable Water
The ODA set a target to achieve a 40% reduction in the demand for
potable water, compared to current industry practice, for all
permanent venues
The Parklands team, in particular, performed exceptionally well with
highly efficient irrigation water demands through:
• planting, particularly drought resistant species;
• irrigation infrastructure, eg: drip irrigation; and
• control instrumentation, to enable effective irrigation decision
making in practice.
Although the venues achieved between 30 to 50% water efficiency,
the Parklands team achieved more than 60% efficiency.
16. London 2012 Pre Games Sustainability Report, April 2012
Zero Waste
The ODA aimed to achieve 90% re-use and recycling of waste
through the demolition phase.
To maximise opportunities for re-use, an inventory of available
materials was made available to the design teams on the Olympic
Park. For example:
• processed concrete for gabion baskets
• reclaimed cobbles and granite kerbstones
• yellow stock bricks and sandstone paving
• broken roof tiles to create invertebrate habitats
The ODA has exceeded its target in this area by achieving 98.5%
re-use and recycling of demolition material.
• 400,000 tonnes of concrete, brick and masonry processed into
recycled aggregates for use on site.
• 20,000 lorry movements saved due to processing and use of
recycled materials on site.
17. London 2012 Pre Games Sustainability Report, April 2012
Land Use and Wildlife
The ODA aspired to protect and enhance the biodiversity and
ecology of the Lower Lea Valley. It has transformed former industrial
land into 100 hectares of parklands to create the largest new urban
park for more than a century. 45 hectares are being installed for
legacy, with 25 hectares already installed for Games-time.
Overall this will include:
• 1.8ha of reedbeds suitable for roosting and breeding birds,
otters and voles;
• 20ha of species-rich grassland suitable for invertebrates, flower
• beetles, ground bugs and bees;
• five hectares of brownfield habitats including log walls, stone-
filled baskets and native tall herbs suitable for lizards, birds,
moths and linnets;
• 11ha of broadleaved woodland and hedgerows;
• 0.9ha of wet woodland – a rare habitat type for amphibians,
snakes and birds;
• four new ponds, at least 50m2 in size and four wetland and
grassland habitats.
