1. Overview on how Make the Connection funds will be used and how students will benefit
Leap requested support from the “Make the Connection” event to support innovative, hands-on architecture programs that will serve approximately 1,000 students across the San Francisco Bay Area. Funding will specifically be used to supplement the fees paid out to Leap’s teaching architects.
We aim for all architects on our roster to be fairly compensated for their time and energy spent:
Preparing lessons and actual classroom time
Evolving their own teaching skills and exploring other professional development endeavors
Researching and purchasing necessary materials to use during architecture residencies (such as drawing supplies, scale model supplies, adhesives, etc)
Organizing culminating events where the children present and display their work to the community.
In FY 2010-11, we paid our teaching architects and artists over $150,000 in their contracts as Leap Teachers. These contract fees for our roster of teaching architects and artists make up over 70% of Leap’s overall residency budget, which in turn represents approximately 73% of the total operating budget.
In FY 2011-12, we expect to pay our teaching architects and artists over $180,000 to continue to provide the highest quality Architecture Residency programs in schools across the Bay Area. The funds raised through Make the Connection will make a huge impact on our ability to compensate our Teaching Architects for their tremendous talents.
