2. ASD stands for the term Autism Spectrum
Disorders.
Defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a
“spectrum disorder” that affects individuals
differently and to varying degrees.
3. Child is demonstrating delays in social and
communication skills.
Genes: ASDs is 4-5 times more likely to occur
in boys than in girls.
Biology and Environment: Certain prescription
drugs taking during pregnancy can put the
child a risk for ASD.
4. 6-9 months: Poor eye contact, absent facial
expression, delayed babbling and decrease in
social smiling.
9-12 months: Decreased orienting to name,
inability to follow a point, infrequent babbling
and decreased monitoring of other’s gaze.
5. 12-15 months: Lack of or rare pointing or
showing, delayed speech and dos not wave
bye-bye
15-18 months: Limited or scripted pretend
play, reduced variety of play acts and early
signs of developmental regression.
6. There is not a simple medical test or procedure
to make and ASD disgnosis.
Many of the early behaviors associated with
ASD overlap with those associated with
language delay and intellectual disabiliy.
7. It is possible for a child to be diagnosis before
the age of 3 but not for all children.
