Three Cups Of Tea By Greg Mortenson Essay
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real life Indiana Jones and his remarkable humanitarian
campaign in the Taliban s backyard is the introduction given to Greg Mortenson s readers before
even opening his book, Three Cups of Tea. This phrase slapped on the back cover of the millions
of books sold in America prepares readers to not only buy into Greg Mortenson s heroic story but
even support his cause. One song we hear too often is the one in which Africa serves as a
backdrop for white fantasies of conquest and heroism (Cole). The problem with Mr. Mortenson s
song is that it provides a single view of the religion of Islam. At first glance of Mortenson s book,

Mortenson also shows the underdevelopment of the Muslims through the women of Pakistan.
The women in the book are depicted as helpless and shameful. For example, when Greg was
captured by the violent Taliban he pleaded for release from the savage men by lying about his
wife giving birth to a son soon (Mortenson, 170). Mortenson essentializes the Muslim men as
underdeveloped and violent by portraying that they value males over females, believing they
would only let him go because he was having a son. The worst part about this example from
Mortenson was that it was a myth, according to John Krakauer s critique Three Cups of Deceit.
Greg staged the Another instance of Mortenson s essentialism was when Mortenson nursed
Rhokia back to health. The women and baby were shown as weak and no one but Greg, of
course, was able to help them. Mortenson shows the primitive nature of the people by describing
their helplessness. Mortenson said, For a Balti to let a foreign man, an infidel, have that kind of
intimate contact with your wife took an incredible leap of faith (Mortenson, 179). He once again
mentions the underdevelopment and male dominance by asking Rhokia s husband if it was okay to
remove her placenta, instead of directly asking her. Mortenson essentializes the women of Pakistan
and portrays them as if they are inferior to men according to

Servant Leadership In Nursing
In both passages Greenleaf and in Biblical verses it is congruently agreed upon that servant
leadership, is a naturally calling that transcends both education and standard conformity. The only
authority deserving one s allegiance is that which is freely and knowingly granted to the led by
the leader in response to, and in proportion to the clearly evident servant nature of the leader
(Greenleaf, 2002). In anticipation of becoming a leader within a healthcare field this writer plans
to utilize the teachings of Matthew 20: 20 28 for guidance in becoming one with whom you serve.
As mentioned in passage 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you
must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be

Essay On Leopold II Of Belgium
King Leopold II of Belgium was born on April 9th, 1935. When Leopold was born, Belgium itself
was only about five years old! Leopold became the oldest son of Belgium I that was alive. Leopold
I was the very first king of Belgium, with his second wife, Louise Marie of OrlГ©ans being
queen. Leopold II became the Duke of Brabant in 1846 as well as serving in the Belgian army. In
1853, Leopold II a beautiful woman married Marie Henriette. She was the daughter of the Austrian
archduke Joseph, who was the palatine of Hungary. Leopold II became king of Belgiumon the day

a picture of the brutal European quest for Congo ivory.
There was a new source of fortune found in the Congo during the 1890s, rubber! An
international rubber race was kicked off by the creation of the inflatable bicycle tire and kept
going by the rise of the automobile using rubber in gaskets and industrial belts, as well as in
shielding for telegraph and telephone wires. People raced to sow rubber trees throughout the
tropics! However, the plants could take years to reach maturity, and during the meantime, there
was money in the rubber trees that were already found in the wild. A great source of wild rubber
was found in the Landolphia vines located in the Central African rainforest. No nation had more
of that land than King Leopold. His private army (19,000 men) known as the Force Publique,
would march into village and hold the women as hostage This would force all the men to go into
the rainforest and gather quota of wild rubber per month. As the price of rubber got higher, the
quotas increased. As vines near their village were drained, men would desperately walk days or
weeks into the forest to find new vines to tap in

Betrayal In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Taking place in the natural world, Samuel Coleridge s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner follows a
man and his crew through a supernatural experience induced by spiritual retribution. This man, the
mysterious Ancient Mariner, is now cursed with the need to share his story so that he may find
temporary relief. In a sense he has become an estranged prophet following the course of his voyage
through the realms of life and death. He and his crew are tormented relentlessly after he willfully
kills the one thing that secured their salvation, a beautiful albatross. Through the intervention and
death of the beloved creature, biblical and other supernatural themes intertwine to create a tale that
parallels a Biblical story of betrayal and combines... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He then thanks the Virgin Mary for his ability to sleep, acknowledging a character of the Bible in
his momentary bliss. During his sleep, the Ancient Mariner s ship sets sail and he awakes to
angels over each of his crewmate s dead bodies guiding the ship into harbor. It is here that the
Ancient Mariner is rescued by the Pilot and Pilot s boy and is able to meet the hermit, a man whose
close relationship with God causes the Ancient Mariner to hope that he can free him of his sin.

Your Vice Research Paper
When I first started watching Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (epic
name, but will now be referred to as Your Vice), I wasn t entirely sure I was going to like it. It
starts off pretty damn weird, with a bunch of hippies dancing around, singing and a guy abusing his
wife. All scenes which really don t connect. However, as the movie gets going, the filmstarts to gel
together and by the end, I was hooked big time. I loved how this movie ended, just absolutely
loved it. I, of course, won t spoil it for you, but I will go into details on a few things in my review
of this phenomenal Blu ray release from Arrow Video.
As mentioned in my Lucio Fulci s Black Cat review, Your Vice is featured in Arrow s phenomenal
Edgar Allan Poe s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Your Vice does do a better job at adapting the story a little more closely, with a few twists and
turns along the way, which I loved. Some of the plot points are a little out there and placed in there
just to confuse you and make you think one thing is happening when actually something else
entirely is taking place. It actually works once the films end credits roll around, so you just got to
stick with the flick to have everything figured out.
I do want to mention how much sexuality is coursing through this movie s veins. There are
copious amounts of nudity, lesbian love scenes and a tiny dash of incest. Edwige Fenech, who
plays Floriana is basically in the movie to seduce every single person and boy, does she do an
amazing job at it. I can t blame anyone for wanting to sleep with her, as she emits raw sexual
energy whenever she is on screen.
I wish I go could into more detail with Your Vice, but mentioning anything specific would ruin the
experience and that would be a damn shame with this movie. Besides a shaky beginning and some
random scenes that make no sense, Your Vice works to tell a fantastic, twisty tale that does justice
to Poe s

How Does Piggy Build Order In Lord Of The Flies
Have you ever considered what would happen without anyone present to maintain order?
Throughout William Golding s The Lord of the Flies , Piggy is portrayed as the responsible one
on the island and helps develop a theme of order versus chaos through his organization on the
island, the bullying he faces and his death. Piggy s attempt to organize on the island helps
develop a theme of order versus chaos because having an organized society helps build order, and
Piggy attempted to re create that. An example is where it describes Piggy when Ralph first blows
the conch: Piggy moved among the crowd, asking names and frowning to remember them. (14).
The fact that asking people their names is the first job that Piggy does shows that he wants to...

He made the conch a symbol of order. The conch brings the boys together for meetings where
they can talk and have order. Piggy also makes it so you cannot speak unless you have the conch.
Piggy and the conch become very close, as if Piggy feels it as the only thing that has order, from
being humiliated by all the other boys. An example of this is after all the boys run up the
mountain to make a fire: Like kids! he said scornfully, Acting like a crowd of kids! Ralph looked
at him doubtfully and laid the conch on a tree trunk... What do they think they re going to do on
that mountain? He caressed the shell respectively, then stopped and looked up. Ralph! Hey!
Where are you going? (37). This shows that the conch is a symbol of order because Ralph puts it
down once order is lost and chaos begins when all the boys run up the mountain, but Piggy picks
it up and starts caressing it, mourning the loss of order. Finally, he stops caressing it when
Ralph decides to join the chaos and runs up the mountain after the other boys. Piggy is killed
when Roger pushes a rock on Piggy which shatters the conch and sends Piggy flying out to sea
to his death: The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a
thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. (200). This shows that with the death of Piggy,
the conch, a symbol of order on the island, also dies. Note how Golding describes it as ceased to
exist . It shows that order ceased to exist with the death of the conch and Piggy, the only two
things on the island that build or represent order, and how chaos ensues after they are gone. That
is why Piggy s death on the island helps develop a theme of order versus

The Ideal American Family Analysis
As stated in an article by Kimi Kennedy entitled Television: The Ideal American Family, most
American families portrayed on television in the late 40s and early 50s consisted of a husband,
wife and 2.5 kids (Kennedy). In Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman, the Loman family seems to
perfectly fit the mold of a familyliving the American dream; however, the actions of the family
show that everything is not what it seems. Although the Lomans appear to be the ideal family of
the time, the way in which the family treats each other directly contrast with other fictional families
of the time. The family s treatment of Happy exemplifies the lack of attention given to some
children within American families. Throughout the play, Happy often takes a back seat to Biff
when it comes to getting his parents attention. In Act I on pages 1851 1853 Happy says multiple
times, I m... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willy is conflicted about his feelings toward Biff. On page 1844, while talking to Linda, Willy goes
from saying, The trouble is he s lazy... to saying That s one thing about Biff he s not lazy in a
matter of seconds (Miller). Biff also feels conflicted about his father. Biff cannot seem to decide if
he really loves his father or not. On page 1864, Biff is confident in his love toward his mother yet,
the love he feels for his father seems to be an afterthought (Miller).
The Loman family seems like the ideal American family based on television in the 1940s and
50s. Willy, Linda, Biff, and Happy, however, do not get along very well and most they all have
secrets that they keep from each other. The Lomans first appear to be a typical fictional family of
the time consisting of a mother, father, and two children, but soon show their flaws. Arthur Miller
breaks the mold for the fictional families of the time in his play Death of a Salesman by
highlighting the flaws and downfalls of each member of the

Long Term Development Policy Paper
Developing Policies Which Optimize Long term Service Sustainability for Vulnerable
Infrastructure Kevin L. Clark, Auroop Ganguly Abstract The Mission of the U.S. Department of
Transportation is to ensure all Americans are served by a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and
convenient transportation system that meets the nation s vital national interest and enhances the
quality of life today and in the future. The airport and National Airspace System (NAS) play a
key role in achieving this mission. That said, approximately 70% of the United States (U.S) air
traffic is managed by staffed air traffic control (ATC) facilities with an age range of 30 50

Government Accountability Office, Report to Congressional Requesters, September 2013, GAO 13
757] INTRODUCTION One of the Federal Aviation Administration s (FAA) primary modernization
goals is to implement policies that ensure their 1,230 facilities enable robust Air Traffic Control
(ATC) services to meet air traffic demand requirements in a safe and efficient manner for all
citizens. These facilities provide the foundation for which the Next Generation Air Transportation
System (NextGen) programs are built on. The challenge of maintaining such complex airport and
facility infrastructures is in the assessment of needs and implementing a clear upgrade and
sustainment prioritization strategy that supports those needs. Similar to large private organizations
the FAA utilizes business policies that identify requirements, mitigate risk to staff and operations,
and accelerate performance. However, to often the expectation of seeing an immediate measurable
change given a strategy has been implemented is misguided. Evidence has shown policy changes
display their impact in long term gains or losses not short term. (Toyoda, 1991) The purpose of this
research is to build a simulation model to investigate the dynamics of modernization investment
policies in the development of long term service availability for all ATC facilities.

Our True Nationality Is Mankind
Our true nationality is mankind. ― H.G. Wells
Today, the scourge of nationalism continues to infect humanity. Without doubt, in some circles,
nationalism is hotly debated. For most people, however, the concept of nationalism is rarely
questioned. In fact, it s a foregone conclusion that people should love the nation in which they
reside. Some people even take great pride in the fact that they were arbitrarily born in a specific
geographical location. Unfortunately, like religion or capitalism, nationalism is alive and well in
the 21st century.
Throughout the history of human civilization, people have been creating, critiquing and altering
institutions. For instance, people have been condemning religion for centuries, indeed millennia.
Yet the institution of religion still remains a dominant force in modern society. Without question,
religious institutions and practices have morphed, dare I say, evolved, over the centuries. But the
fundamental concept that human beings exist within an abstract framework of Gods, mythologies,
symbols, and so forth, still remains.
In short, it takes an extremely long time to change ideologies and practices. On the other hand, that
doesn t mean conversations about such topics should be off limits or discouraged. Quite the
contrary: such conversations are essential, especially today. As the legendary science fiction writer
Ursula K. Le Guin recently said, We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the
divine right of

Underage Drinking And The Problem Of College Alcohol Abuse...
Alcohol abuse in college Underage drinking is a problem within the US and has been for some
time. No matter how hard many businesses try it still goes on because of the kid s lucrative
ways to obtain it. Many kids use fake IDs or have a person of age purchase it for them. This
problem of alcohol abuse is most prominently seen it college. One college it often occurs at is
Indiana Universityin Bloomington. The early habit of drinking alcoholcan have many bad effects
on one s body at a young age and causes habits, decrease in grades, and other negative outcomes.
The biggest problem with this alcohol abuseis the way the kids consume it. Binge drinking is the
biggest worry with this high alcohol consumption. Binge drinking is consuming high quantities of
alcohol in a short period of time. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol
Consumption 4 out of 5 college students drink alcohol, about half of those who do engage in binge
drinking. There are many bad results that happen when students do consume alcohol at such a high
rate on their own body and those around them. Not only do these students decrease their inhibitions,
but their ability to make smart decisions also decreases quite a bit. Some of the many problems
these students face is death, assault, sexual abuse, self injuries, health problems and academic
problems. Recently at Indiana University they felt some of these harsh realities of alcohol abuse hit
home. Five students that attended Indiana

Overview of Insider Trading
Introduction On June 4, 2003, the Securities Exchange Commission announced that it was
pursuing charges against investor Martha Stewart and stock broker Peter Bacanovic for
securities fraud. The fraud occurred on December 27, 2001 when Stewart sold stock in ImClone
Systems, after receiving an unlawful tip from Bacanovic, who at the time was working for
Merrill Lynch. The SEC also accused the two of attempting to cover up the insider actions, and
of making false statements regarding the ImClone trades to SEC investigators (SEC, 2003).
Stephen Cutler, the SEC director of enforcement said in the SEC s press release about the
charges that It is fundamentally unfair for someone to have an edge on the market just because
she has a stockbroker who is willing to break the rules and give her an illegal tip. It s worse still
when the individual engaging in the insider trading is the Chairman and CEO of a public company.
This statement and the philosophy behind it is a central part in the debate about the merits, not so
much about the case against Stewart but against the prosecution of Stewart. The SEC sought
redress not only in the form of monetary penalties and prison time, but it also sought to have
Stewart removed from a position as officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (SEC, 2003). The
Case ImClone was a relatively small pharmaceutical firm. At the time of the offense, ImClone was
awaiting a decision from the Food and Drug Administration regarding the status of Erbitux,

Essay about Phonics and Whole Language
Phonics and Whole Language A great debate whether the phonetic approach or whole language
approach should be used in the classroom has been occurring since the early nineteen thirties, and
there has not been a definite decision on which approach should be used to teach in the classroom.
To understand this debate, one must first understand the differences between whole language and
phonics learning.
The Definition of Phonics
Many people are confused by the term phonics, because the term can literally have two meanings.
As Miriam Balmuth explains, in the historically earlier sense, the phonics of written language are
the letters and spelling patterns of that language s alphabet and the speech sounds they represent put

Look and Say dominated the school system as a result of a strategic marketing plan carried out by
the publisher (Schafely, 1996).
Time for a Change?
The school systems have had educational backgrounds molded after whole language, and its
time for a phonics approach. It is now more crucial than ever for a change in the system. It
would be impossible to expect the educational system to completely change the way children are
learning to read, but the system must make small, quick changes over a short period of time to
encompass the use of the phonics approach. Not all children have the same learning capabilities,
and that is one of the main arguments against phonics. Many people in opposition say that not
all children can learn from the phonics approach. What people opposed to phonics do not
understand is that phonics can be incorporated into the learning process along with whole
language to ensure a balance and complete understanding of the English language (Unkown,
1994). With whole language as the basis to the learning process, I believe that the schools are
giving out good grade cards to children who are good at guessing and memorizing words. With
this in place, parents don t realize that their children are being taught to guess instead of learning
to read properly. It seems as though the schools have placed more priority on self esteem and
appraisal than on literacy. It has come to a point where

The social conformity of the 1950s can best be described as a traditional family that abides by
their gender roles. Essentially, the 1950s were when people could finally take advantage of the
new time consuming inventions and economic boosts after having experienced WWII and the
Great Depression. However, the social conformity was just the general overview of the 1950s but
poverty, racism, and alienation still persisted. The resistance against social conformity was
expressed by rebellion including occurrences like the Empire Zinc Strike, the Mendez v.

Science Without Science Is Materialism
BahГЎ u llГЎh, the founder of the BahГЎ Г faith, once said, Religion without science is
superstition and science without religion is materialism (www.bahai.org). Throughout history,
mankind always strive to seek answers to solve the perplexities of the world. For that, there is one
question that provokes everyone s curiosity: How was the world created? Young earth creationism
is an example of where scienceexplains natural phenomenon that enabled life to establish and
where faith explains that an almighty being created the world through wondrous works. As of
today, it is still a debate that continues because of different conclusions of how the world came to
be. In order to delve further into the issue, insights from Plato, Francis Bacon, and Richard

over religion. To identify factors that drive people to believe why the world was created by natural
and scientific forces instead of being made by an almighty being, a various distinctions from science
and faith must be made. According to the Bible, it is written, In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All

Another way of successfully gathering information is by building a prototype or model of the
system, so that users can test or get an idea of what the finished product will be like. With this they
can determine issues, problems, or inconsistency with the system. Another important part of
gathering information is organizing it so that it can be understood and put to proper use. I propose
categorizing the requirements into functional requirements, operational requirements, technical
requirements, and transitional requirements. The functional requirements define how the user
thinks the system is functioning overall, the operational requirements define what background
processes need to be executed in order for the system to work optimally over a period of time, the
technical requirements define what technical issues that must be addressed in order to successfully
implement the system, and the transitional requirements define the processes or steps needed to

Analysis Of The Film Invictus
Many times, when I think of leaders, I tend to look their heart. Being a leader is more than that
but, if a leader doesn t have a good heart than they aren t a good person in my opinion. Therefore,
I believe that the film Invictus does a great job at portraying just that. This film follows two real
life leaders Nelson Mandela and François Pienaar. Both come together and try to unite South
Africa. After Mandela, is jailed for over 27 years his goal is to have peace amongst all the races.
One very important thing that is talked about is the essence of leadership. Nelson, states that
people are inspired to do greatness and so is everyone else by using the work of others. He only
expects more of himself. This is what keeps him going every day and that s how he keeps growing
as a person.
In the film, Mandela showed qualities of a true leader. He did not hold onto resentment even
though he was in jail for almost three decades. In one instance, he wanted races to be united no
matter the color of their skin. When his security team needed more people, he made sure that he
had white security as well. Mandela s original team did not agree with him and therefore they were
furious. The head of security went to speak with Mandela and Mandela told him that change starts
with them. By him having different types of races working for him this showcased that it didn t
matter the color of their skin. Everyone is equal in the end.
Going further into the film, Mandela showed leadership

To What Extent Is a Focus on Metaphor and Symbol Central...
To what extent is a focus on metaphor and symbol central to an analysis and understanding of
Douglas Dunn s poetry? (The Kaleidoscope/Sandra s Mobile/Second Opinion)
It is considered more difficult for a poet to grab the attention and imagination of an audience than it
is for an author. The use of metaphor and symbol in poetry means that the poet can say one thing
and invoke a whole range of possibilities, be it love, anger, jealousy or envy; an old memory or a
new wish. The use of metaphors and symbols enables the audience to see what they believe Dunn
meant, by imaging his true meaning of a word. The three poems I have chosen to study are: The

Throughout the poem, Dunn recollects and remembers the memories, however, the use of the
word wait could symbolise the wait involved in grieving, finally accepting that your loved one is
gone and beginning to piece your life back together. The repetition of wait in line 13, in
reference to an absurd forgiveness shows us that Dunn blames himself for his Wife s death, and
it symbolises the amount of guilt he is carrying, especially when combined with the line above in
which Dunn begins to resort to desperation through the use of the verb offering me followed by
the triad my flesh, my soul, my skin which could symbolise the ultimate sacrifice. In line 7, A
symmetry of husbands, each redesigned shows the imperfections that Dunn believes he has, not
even symmetry, the idea of an exactness to two halves, could stop Dunn being redesigned. It
could also symbolise, through the idea of husbands, the huge workload that was placed on one
man. This links with the triads placed in the poem, the idea of constant simultaneous actions,
stand, and wait, and cry , foresight, prayer and hope , having to juggle the knowledge of The tray
mentioned in line 1 and line 10, could symbolise the idea of slavery, to be carrying a tray,
responding to every movement and request, and yet, the reader can see that Dunn does what he
does out of love, he puts himself through unimaginable turmoil to prolong the time

Jealousy In Othello Essay
Jealousy is originally introduced into the story when Iago becomes upset by Othello s successful
convincing of Desdemona to marry him. His hate for him is further increased by Othello s other
accolades like becoming a general in the Venetian army. In the mind of Iago, he is inferior to
Othello in these two areas, which is why he plans to attack him on these points. Iagothen makes
plans to both make Othellolose his prestigious General position in the military (I,iii,395), and cause

This, though small, made Othello consider that his wife may in fact be cheating; this was
important because it sowed a seed of doubt in Othello s mind. In a few dialogues between
Othello and Iago, after Iago talked with Cassio, Iago twists his previous conversation in order to
make Othello more and more suspicious. In regards to one such conversation Omer and Verona
said This exchange shows Iago s knack for seeding these negative ideas through implied
communications, (#). After this interaction, Othello is left with a deep desire to know what was
said between the two characters; which leads him to obsess over the thought of his wife s possible

Once the seeds were sown, the other character who displays this extreme jealousy is the
protagonist himself. Othello s initial jealousy of Cassio and his wife s relationship after Iago
essentially brainwashes him into completely disbelieving his wife and convincing himself that
she was having an affair, ultimately leading to an uncontrollable rage. Once this happened,
Othello began to consult Iago on how to exact revenge on his offenders . Othello convinces
himself that this revenge mut be taken in order to show his wife that he will not be made a fool
of and cheated on. This however is in a way hard to comprehend; due to Othello not embodying
this villainous persona the same way Iago does. The character of Othello is closer to that of an

The Effects Of Outdoor Sports Lighting On The Community
Can something as common as lighting cause enough contention to divide a community? In New
Providence the answer is a resounding yes. Without land available for the opening of new athletic
fields, there simply are not enough sports fields to meet the needs of the town s population. In an
effort to solve this dilemma, the proposal has been made by the New Providence Partnership for
Recreation (NPPR) to install lightingin Lieder Field. The benefits to the community include an
increase in hours each day the fieldmay be used at no expense to the taxpayer. Yet, others in the
community believe that outdoor sports lighting would have a negative impact on the quality of life
in the community, be too costly and would diminish the property value of nearby homes. While
athletic field lights have been used in southern New Jersey without these negative impacts that part
of the state is significantly more rural than densely populated New Providence. Is athletic field
lighting beneficial for the town of New Providence? While there are always benefits as well as
negative consequences for community decisions, the benefits of installing athletic field lighting far
outweigh the negative ramifications.

Causes Of Earthquakes By The Movements Of The Earth
Cause of earthquakes:
Earthquakes are caused by the movements of the earth. Large blocks of stone called tectonic plates
are constantly moving creating friction and stress with each other. These earthquakes then cause
massive damage above the surface. There are three different types of earthquakes.
Convergent: This occurs when two plates crash into each other from separate directions, this sudden
crash lasts until one plates goes over the other, this is called a thrust movement. Over millions of
years this can cause mountains to form.
Divergent: This happens when plates are forced apart, this is common on ocean floors as it creates
deep sea trenches. It can also cause canyons.

It is used to classify the effect the earthquake will have on the surface. Unlike the Richter scale it
does not take the energy of an earthquake into account. The Mercalli scale has a scale from

a Mercalli scale of l is felt by very few people and causes no damage, while a Mercalli scale of Xll it
is chaotic, the ground is visibly moving in waves, objects are thrown into the air, most structures
are destroyed and people are fearing for their lives.
Example of recent event including damaged caused
In 2016, November 14th, 00:02 am, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the south island of New

closed in the morning due to landslides, damaged infrastructure and risk of falling debris. It took

script also offers a unique hook: she s a skilled fighter. In fact, the idea of the mystery fighter,

murder of her parents and the disappearance of her brother. It s a solid inciting event. Her goal of
revenge is clear and the stakes are high.

To elevate the pace and the tension, one possible solution is to have Rosette find the other invaders
and show her killing them, one by one with her fighting skills, leaving Fitz as the last one. This is a
formula that has been done before, but it works to maintain tension and interest. It also builds
suspense. Right now, the tone could be grittier and the violence enhanced.
The other issue that feels unsolved is Rosette s brother. It s our understanding that she s still
looking for him, but at the end it doesn t feel as if she s going after him.
As mentioned, Rosette is a very likable heroine. It s easy to root for her. She makes some wrong
decisions, but they are for the right reasons. While flawed, the audience forgives her. She wants
justice, but she s driven by revenge at the risk of her life and she has forsaken any personal life
for her quest. She s smart and she s determined. She s still grieving and at the end, she seems to be

Comparing Power In Animal Farm And Inner Circle

Animal Farm by George Orwell and the film Inner Circle by the way the characters act during

abuse of power are shown. Another theme showed, more in Animal Farm is that absolute power
is not always the answer. There are two pivotal characters in both of these works that provide the

This is portrayed with Boxer s motto of Napoleon is always right . Similarly in Inner Circle, the

ground he walks on, his mind begins to blur and he starts to see Stalin as the others see him; like

animals to make them think that everything they were doing was for the good of the citizens, not
just to benefit themselves. Like Ivan and boxer, Katya was also extremely impressionable. She
began to think that everything Stalin did for her by taking her away from her parents was a good

him that Snowball is not to be trusted because he has rebelled, like Katya s parents. Adding on,

Questions On Historical Criticisms Of Derivatives Essay
Introduction Derivatives tend to be an intricate topic in accounting. So to begin, a very basic
understanding of a derivative is that they are a binding contract between two or more parties.
The contract is for a future transaction of some underlying financial asset. The purpose for
companies to implement derivatives are to aid them in managing risk by using a type of
financial forwards, futures, options, or swaps. For example, a forward contract is when
Company A believes Company B s stock price will substantially increase over the next year.
However, Company A does not have the resources to purchase the stock today. Therefore,
Company A and B enter a contract for delivery of 10,000 shares of Company B in one year at an
agreed upon price. However, derivatives are incredibly more exhaustive than the rudimentary
illustration above.
Thus, this discussion will examine scholarly articles to provide insight on historical criticisms of
derivatives, why derivatives tend to be a more complicated accounting topic, implications for
auditors and analysts, how FASB is making attempts to simplify derivatives, and lastly, concluding
remarks.
Historical Criticisms When FASB first released the exposure draft for derivatives, it received
strong criticisms. Dolde and Swieringa (1997), shortly after the exposure draft was released, listed
some of the major criticisms. Dolde and Swieringa (1997, 2) noted that, Many...believe that

Smooth Operator Research Paper
One Smooth Operator Sade is one smooth operator herself. She is the only female who could
pull of red lipstick and hoop earrings without being called a few choice words. Sade (pronounced
Shar day) came on the scene in 1980 only to become legendary and timeless. Born in Ibadan,
Nigeria on January 16, Helen Folasade Adu became a popular artist in the US seemingly
overnight. Her mother, Anne Hayes, is British and her father, Bisi Adu is, of course, Nigerian.
However, she was raised in London by her mother. Sade, in the beginning, tampered with fashion
design, modeling and singing. Her talent and reputation as a musician/singer landed her jobs
with local bands. It wasn t long before Sade signed with Epic Records and recorded Diamond
Life, which was her first album. It won the British Phonographic Industry Award for British Album
in 1985. It was a massive hit over in England, her native stomping grounds. Diamond Life features
one of her best singles, Smooth Operator. It was not surprising that Sade would win a Grammy
Award for Best New Artist the following year (1986).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

rest of her albums and came some time after Love Deluxe. In fact, it was eight years in between

Inquisitorial System Vs United States Criminal Justice System
The United State Criminal Justice System is entirely different from the French. France system is

the U.S a judge is essentially a referee in court proceedings, compared to the French system were
the judge is known as the inquisitor who establishes the truth and justice. Judges question

The Causes And Effect Of Resistance On The Government...
This dissertation reviewing the results of research by academic writers on issues of resistance to
change, which occurred both in the public and private sectors. Significantly, special attention will
be given to writings that discuss the causes of the emergence of resistance to change. In this case,
the works of Anis Khassawneh, and Rosemond Boohene and Asamoah Appiah Williams will be
critically reviewed.
1. Anis Khassawneh
Khassawneh works considered relevant to the part of this study because it has been investigated and

Meanwhile, Khassawneh (2015: 26 27) has conducted a research and found that there are four
factors that trigger the rejection of the employee to change in government organisations in Jordan.
There are due to the lack of participation of employees, inadequate incentives, distrust between
higher management and workers, and lack of clarity in the goals of change. He formulated these
results by selecting the top four answers of respondents.
The works of Khan (1989), Jreisat (1988), and Khassawneh (2005) carried out in different time
periods, which is about 17 years. Nevertheless, there are similarities research findings about the
reasons that led to the employee refuses to change, namely the lack of commitment of the
leadership in making changes. This work has provided insight into some of the research questions
on the causes of resistance, so it is considered relevant to this dissertation.
Moreover, the work of Khassawneh can be relied on. He is a former government employee. He also
is a lecturer in the training programs conducted by the Institute of Public Administration, so it is
already familiar with the change of administration in the public sector in Jordan. Although not

Western Influence On Things Fall Apart
In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe it is demonstrated how the Ibo culture slowly
deteriorated from their own culture. The Western ideas influenced a different impact on certain
characters, this also included characters like Okonwo and his son Nwoye. Many from the Ibo
culture were confused by the merge of the European people slowly but subtly trying to enforce
and covert their religion upon them. The books ending explained why the book was written in the
first place, which was to break the silence that existed from the unheard side of the colonized
people. The novel explained the impact Nwoye encountered with Western ideas was a clear and
positive one. Nwoye felt like he resonated, was wanted, and more suited in the new culture... Show

his life teachers and they show him how to live and survive in and outside the Graveyard. This
Book showed us how people whose parents that are gone or left can still be cared for by others
and it shows the audience that a dead corpse can love a child as much as the living which shows
that anyone can be cherished or loved by anybody. I think it out does any other book in the genre
because it doesn t have the same since of morality or realism as the others do in the genre, and
by doing that the book appeals to me both emotionally and logically because it makes you love
Mr. and Mrs. Owens because they stood up to the challenge of raising bod with their restrictions

The fact remains that there is a substantial difference between a corporation and a university.
Universities are meant to be a place of learning and just like science is able to accept new theories,
we should be willing to accept new ideas. Building tolerance as a community allows us to embraces
unpopular ideas. That being said, there is very good reasons to protect offensive or unpopular
speech. During the 1950 s, minority groups didn t have the right to vote and civil rights movements
sprung across the country. Voting right activists in the South experienced various forms of
mistreatment and violence. One such event on March 7, 1965, when peaceful participants in a
voting rights march from Selma, Alabama, to the state capital in Montgomery were met by
Alabama state troopers who attacked them with nightsticks, tear gas and whips after they refused to
turn back ( Voting Rights Act ). One can conclude based on the reactions, the decision to call in the
state troopers and the state troopers attacking the protestors, that these individuals found the protest
offensive and threating their values of white supremacy. Therefore, should we banned offensive or
popular speech solely on the fact that these speech may make some individuals feel uncomfortable

My Out Of Class Speaker Critique Assignment
For my out of class speaker critique assignment, I chose to go and attend the public lecture on

7:00 to 8:30 pm. This lecture occurred on Wednesday, February 15th. In his speech, Mr. Davis
talked about his youthful years, the initial challenges he faced, the business strategies he used, and
the wild adventure he endured throughout his comical Garfieldbusiness adventures. Regarding his

Otherwise, there seemed to be no significant or obvious distinction amongst members. The
attitudinal makeup of the audience was either neutral or positive, as Davis and his work are most
known for being lighthearted and joyful. Mr. Davis undoubtedly considered these elements when
he planned his lecture, as a large portion of it was centered around the nostalgic feeling the
Garfield comics give to the crowd (C3). Regarding the introduction used during the lecture, I felt
that it was more than effective in its explanation of Davis by showing what he is primarily known
for, what the audience was about to witness, and by creating a favorable atmosphere for the lecture.
To gain the audience s attention, a video demonstrating Mr. Davis s history and accomplishments
was played before he began his lecture. Overall, I thought that it was a moderately effective
introduction because it reinforced the interest of the audience, displayed the significance Davis has
to the illustration business, and presented his credibility as well known illustrator. For example, I
thought it was interesting that the administrator jokingly announced Davis as a man too important
to be talking a public lecture. On the other hand, however, I also thought that the introduction was
somewhat ineffective in that it never overviewed what was going to be talked about in the rest of
the lecture (C4). Concerning the support used in the speech, Mr. Davis relied heavily on qualitative

  • 2. Three Cups Of Tea By Greg Mortenson Essay The astonishing, uplifting story of a real life Indiana Jones and his remarkable humanitarian campaign in the Taliban s backyard is the introduction given to Greg Mortenson s readers before even opening his book, Three Cups of Tea. This phrase slapped on the back cover of the millions of books sold in America prepares readers to not only buy into Greg Mortenson s heroic story but even support his cause. One song we hear too often is the one in which Africa serves as a backdrop for white fantasies of conquest and heroism (Cole). The problem with Mr. Mortenson s song is that it provides a single view of the religion of Islam. At first glance of Mortenson s book, [Greg s] mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time is an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mortenson also shows the underdevelopment of the Muslims through the women of Pakistan. The women in the book are depicted as helpless and shameful. For example, when Greg was captured by the violent Taliban he pleaded for release from the savage men by lying about his wife giving birth to a son soon (Mortenson, 170). Mortenson essentializes the Muslim men as underdeveloped and violent by portraying that they value males over females, believing they would only let him go because he was having a son. The worst part about this example from Mortenson was that it was a myth, according to John Krakauer s critique Three Cups of Deceit. Greg staged the Another instance of Mortenson s essentialism was when Mortenson nursed Rhokia back to health. The women and baby were shown as weak and no one but Greg, of course, was able to help them. Mortenson shows the primitive nature of the people by describing their helplessness. Mortenson said, For a Balti to let a foreign man, an infidel, have that kind of intimate contact with your wife took an incredible leap of faith (Mortenson, 179). He once again mentions the underdevelopment and male dominance by asking Rhokia s husband if it was okay to remove her placenta, instead of directly asking her. Mortenson essentializes the women of Pakistan and portrays them as if they are inferior to men according to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Servant Leadership In Nursing In both passages Greenleaf and in Biblical verses it is congruently agreed upon that servant leadership, is a naturally calling that transcends both education and standard conformity. The only authority deserving one s allegiance is that which is freely and knowingly granted to the led by the leader in response to, and in proportion to the clearly evident servant nature of the leader (Greenleaf, 2002). In anticipation of becoming a leader within a healthcare field this writer plans to utilize the teachings of Matthew 20: 20 28 for guidance in becoming one with whom you serve. Joseph Conrad was a man who spend six months in the Congo during 1990 as an officer as a steamboat, and in his novel called Heart of Darkness, he gives shows a picture of the brutal European quest for Congo ivory. There was a new source of fortune found in the Congo during the 1890s, rubber! An international rubber race was kicked off by the creation of the inflatable bicycle tire and kept going by the rise of the automobile using rubber in gaskets and industrial belts, as well as in shielding for telegraph and telephone wires. People raced to sow rubber trees throughout the tropics! However, the plants could take years to reach maturity, and during the meantime, there was money in the rubber trees that were already found in the wild. A great source of wild rubber was found in the Landolphia vines located in the Central African rainforest. No nation had more of that land than King Leopold. His private army (19,000 men) known as the Force Publique, would march into village and hold the women as hostage This would force all the men to go into the rainforest and gather quota of wild rubber per month. As the price of rubber got higher, the quotas increased. As vines near their village were drained, men would desperately walk days or weeks into the forest to find new vines to tap in ... • 7. Betrayal In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner Taking place in the natural world, Samuel Coleridge s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner follows a man and his crew through a supernatural experience induced by spiritual retribution. This man, the mysterious Ancient Mariner, is now cursed with the need to share his story so that he may find temporary relief. In a sense he has become an estranged prophet following the course of his voyage through the realms of life and death. He and his crew are tormented relentlessly after he willfully kills the one thing that secured their salvation, a beautiful albatross. • 8. Your Vice Research Paper When I first started watching Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (epic name, but will now be referred to as Your Vice), I wasn t entirely sure I was going to like it. It starts off pretty damn weird, with a bunch of hippies dancing around, singing and a guy abusing his wife. All scenes which really don t connect. However, as the movie gets going, the filmstarts to gel together and by the end, I was hooked big time. I loved how this movie ended, just absolutely loved it. I, of course, won t spoil it for you, but I will go into details on a few things in my review of this phenomenal Blu ray release from Arrow Video. As mentioned in my Lucio Fulci s Black Cat review, Your Vice is featured in Arrow s phenomenal Edgar Allan Poe s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Your Vice does do a better job at adapting the story a little more closely, with a few twists and turns along the way, which I loved. Some of the plot points are a little out there and placed in there just to confuse you and make you think one thing is happening when actually something else entirely is taking place. It actually works once the films end credits roll around, so you just got to stick with the flick to have everything figured out. I do want to mention how much sexuality is coursing through this movie s veins. There are copious amounts of nudity, lesbian love scenes and a tiny dash of incest. Edwige Fenech, who plays Floriana is basically in the movie to seduce every single person and boy, does she do an amazing job at it. I can t blame anyone for wanting to sleep with her, as she emits raw sexual energy whenever she is on screen. I wish I go could into more detail with Your Vice, but mentioning anything specific would ruin the experience and that would be a damn shame with this movie. Besides a shaky beginning and some random scenes that make no sense, Your Vice works to tell a fantastic, twisty tale that does justice to Poe s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. How Does Piggy Build Order In Lord Of The Flies Have you ever considered what would happen without anyone present to maintain order? Throughout William Golding s The Lord of the Flies , Piggy is portrayed as the responsible one on the island and helps develop a theme of order versus chaos through his organization on the island, the bullying he faces and his death. Piggy s attempt to organize on the island helps develop a theme of order versus chaos because having an organized society helps build order, and Piggy attempted to re create that. An example is where it describes Piggy when Ralph first blows the conch: Piggy moved among the crowd, asking names and frowning to remember them. (14). The fact that asking people their names is the first job that Piggy does shows that he wants to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He made the conch a symbol of order. The conch brings the boys together for meetings where they can talk and have order. Piggy also makes it so you cannot speak unless you have the conch. Piggy and the conch become very close, as if Piggy feels it as the only thing that has order, from being humiliated by all the other boys. An example of this is after all the boys run up the mountain to make a fire: Like kids! he said scornfully, Acting like a crowd of kids! Ralph looked at him doubtfully and laid the conch on a tree trunk... What do they think they re going to do on that mountain? He caressed the shell respectively, then stopped and looked up. Ralph! Hey! Where are you going? (37). This shows that the conch is a symbol of order because Ralph puts it down once order is lost and chaos begins when all the boys run up the mountain, but Piggy picks it up and starts caressing it, mourning the loss of order. Finally, he stops caressing it when Ralph decides to join the chaos and runs up the mountain after the other boys. Piggy is killed when Roger pushes a rock on Piggy which shatters the conch and sends Piggy flying out to sea to his death: The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. (200). This shows that with the death of Piggy, the conch, a symbol of order on the island, also dies. Note how Golding describes it as ceased to exist . It shows that order ceased to exist with the death of the conch and Piggy, the only two things on the island that build or represent order, and how chaos ensues after they are gone. That is why Piggy s death on the island helps develop a theme of order versus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Ideal American Family Analysis As stated in an article by Kimi Kennedy entitled Television: The Ideal American Family, most American families portrayed on television in the late 40s and early 50s consisted of a husband, wife and 2.5 kids (Kennedy). In Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman, the Loman family seems to perfectly fit the mold of a familyliving the American dream; however, the actions of the family show that everything is not what it seems. Although the Lomans appear to be the ideal family of the time, the way in which the family treats each other directly contrast with other fictional families of the time. The family s treatment of Happy exemplifies the lack of attention given to some children within American families. Throughout the play, Happy often takes a back seat to Biff when it comes to getting his parents attention. In Act I on pages 1851 1853 Happy says multiple times, I m... On page 1864, Biff is confident in his love toward his mother yet, the love he feels for his father seems to be an afterthought (Miller). The Loman family seems like the ideal American family based on television in the 1940s and 50s. Willy, Linda, Biff, and Happy, however, do not get along very well and most they all have secrets that they keep from each other. The Lomans first appear to be a typical fictional family of the time consisting of a mother, father, and two children, but soon show their flaws. The challenge of maintaining such complex airport and facility infrastructures is in the assessment of needs and implementing a clear upgrade and sustainment prioritization strategy that supports those needs. Similar to large private organizations the FAA utilizes business policies that identify requirements, mitigate risk to staff and operations, and accelerate performance. However, to often the expectation of seeing an immediate measurable change given a strategy has been implemented is misguided. Evidence has shown policy changes display their impact in long term gains or losses not short term. (Toyoda, 1991) The purpose of this research is to build a simulation model to investigate the dynamics of modernization investment policies in the development of long term service availability for all ATC facilities. ... • 14. Our True Nationality Is Mankind Our true nationality is mankind. ― H.G. Wells Today, the scourge of nationalism continues to infect humanity. Without doubt, in some circles, nationalism is hotly debated. For most people, however, the concept of nationalism is rarely questioned. In fact, it s a foregone conclusion that people should love the nation in which they reside. Some people even take great pride in the fact that they were arbitrarily born in a specific geographical location. Unfortunately, like religion or capitalism, nationalism is alive and well in the 21st century. Throughout the history of human civilization, people have been creating, critiquing and altering institutions. For instance, people have been condemning religion for centuries, indeed millennia. Yet the institution of religion still remains a dominant force in modern society. Without question, religious institutions and practices have morphed, dare I say, evolved, over the centuries. But the fundamental concept that human beings exist within an abstract framework of Gods, mythologies, symbols, and so forth, still remains. In short, it takes an extremely long time to change ideologies and practices. On the other hand, that doesn t mean conversations about such topics should be off limits or discouraged. Quite the contrary: such conversations are essential, especially today. As the legendary science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin recently said, We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. • 18. Overview of Insider Trading Introduction On June 4, 2003, the Securities Exchange Commission announced that it was pursuing charges against investor Martha Stewart and stock broker Peter Bacanovic for securities fraud. The fraud occurred on December 27, 2001 when Stewart sold stock in ImClone Systems, after receiving an unlawful tip from Bacanovic, who at the time was working for Merrill Lynch. The SEC also accused the two of attempting to cover up the insider actions, and of making false statements regarding the ImClone trades to SEC investigators (SEC, 2003). Stephen Cutler, the SEC director of enforcement said in the SEC s press release about the charges that It is fundamentally unfair for someone to have an edge on the market just because she has a stockbroker who is willing to break the rules and give her an illegal tip. It s worse still when the individual engaging in the insider trading is the Chairman and CEO of a public company. This statement and the philosophy behind it is a central part in the debate about the merits, not so much about the case against Stewart but against the prosecution of Stewart. The SEC sought redress not only in the form of monetary penalties and prison time, but it also sought to have Stewart removed from a position as officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (SEC, 2003). To understand this debate, one must first understand the differences between whole language and phonics learning. The school systems have had educational backgrounds molded after whole language, and its time for a phonics approach. It is now more crucial than ever for a change in the system. It would be impossible to expect the educational system to completely change the way children are learning to read, but the system must make small, quick changes over a short period of time to encompass the use of the phonics approach. Not all children have the same learning capabilities, and that is one of the main arguments against phonics. Many people in opposition say that not all children can learn from the phonics approach. What people opposed to phonics do not understand is that phonics can be incorporated into the learning process along with whole language to ensure a balance and complete understanding of the English language (Unkown, 1994). With whole language as the basis to the learning process, I believe that the schools are giving out good grade cards to children who are good at guessing and memorizing words. With this in place, parents don t realize that their children are being taught to guess instead of learning to read properly. Being a leader is more than that but, if a leader doesn t have a good heart than they aren t a good person in my opinion. Therefore, I believe that the film Invictus does a great job at portraying just that. This film follows two real life leaders Nelson Mandela and FranГ§ois Pienaar. Both come together and try to unite South Africa. After Mandela, is jailed for over 27 years his goal is to have peace amongst all the races. One very important thing that is talked about is the essence of leadership. Nelson, states that people are inspired to do greatness and so is everyone else by using the work of others. He only expects more of himself. This is what keeps him going every day and that s how he keeps growing as a person. In the film, Mandela showed qualities of a true leader. He did not hold onto resentment even though he was in jail for almost three decades. In one instance, he wanted races to be united no matter the color of their skin. When his security team needed more people, he made sure that he had white security as well. Mandela s original team did not agree with him and therefore they were furious. The head of security went to speak with Mandela and Mandela told him that change starts with them. By him having different types of races working for him this showcased that it didn t matter the color of their skin. Everyone is equal in the end. • 37. Causes Of Earthquakes By The Movements Of The Earth Cause of earthquakes: Earthquakes are caused by the movements of the earth. Large blocks of stone called tectonic plates are constantly moving creating friction and stress with each other. These earthquakes then cause massive damage above the surface. There are three different types of earthquakes. Convergent: This occurs when two plates crash into each other from separate directions, this sudden crash lasts until one plates goes over the other, this is called a thrust movement. Over millions of years this can cause mountains to form. Divergent: This happens when plates are forced apart, this is common on ocean floors as it creates deep sea trenches. It can also cause canyons. Transform: This occurs when two plates slide past each other,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a formula that has been done before, but it works to maintain tension and interest. It also builds suspense. Right now, the tone could be grittier and the violence enhanced. The other issue that feels unsolved is Rosette s brother. It s our understanding that she s still looking for him, but at the end it doesn t feel as if she s going after him. • 40. Questions On Historical Criticisms Of Derivatives Essay Introduction Derivatives tend to be an intricate topic in accounting. So to begin, a very basic understanding of a derivative is that they are a binding contract between two or more parties. The contract is for a future transaction of some underlying financial asset. The purpose for companies to implement derivatives are to aid them in managing risk by using a type of financial forwards, futures, options, or swaps. For example, a forward contract is when Company A believes Company B s stock price will substantially increase over the next year. However, Company A does not have the resources to purchase the stock today. Therefore, Company A and B enter a contract for delivery of 10,000 shares of Company B in one year at an agreed upon price. However, derivatives are incredibly more exhaustive than the rudimentary illustration above. Thus, this discussion will examine scholarly articles to provide insight on historical criticisms of derivatives, why derivatives tend to be a more complicated accounting topic, implications for auditors and analysts, how FASB is making attempts to simplify derivatives, and lastly, concluding remarks. Historical Criticisms When FASB first released the exposure draft for derivatives, it received strong criticisms. Dolde and Swieringa (1997), shortly after the exposure draft was released, listed some of the major criticisms.
