4. Out of the basement means…
Not in a silo— “lives” with other formats
Falstaff's death scene, for which the speeches were
lifted bodily from Henry IV, Part 2, is boldly invented.
The shrunken, heartbroken old companion of
Henry's escapades (George Robey, famed British
low comedian) hears again, obsessively, the terrible
speech ("A man ...so old and so profane....") in
which the King casts him off. In this new context, for
the first time perhaps, the piercing line, "The king
has kill'd his heart," is given its full power. In the
transition scene which takes the audience from
Falstaff's death to the invasion of France, the
Chorus makes a final appearance alone against the
night sky, then recedes and fades as the movie
takes over from him.
(James Agee’s 1946 review)

11. Library trends changing ASP publishing
Some libraries do continue to purchase whole collections
• Makes sense when a collection supports a program
• We continue to publish discipline-specific collections
(but now they are multi-format)
But other libraries want to select relevant films
• New models for acquiring video
• EBA (evidence-based acquisitions)
• PDA (patron-driven acquisitions)
• Acquisitions really means “acquisitions”
• Single titles
• Topical bundles
12. New acquisition models:
EBA and PDA
PDA (patron-driven acquisitions)
• Patrons have unlimited access to >20,000 films.
• Patrons determine what you buy (trigger after set # of user views).
• Library sets the spending cap.
• Option for perpetual rights or annual subscription, library’s choice.
• Sign up now for pilot beginning January 2015.
EBA (evidence-based acquisitions)
• Patrons have unlimited access to >41,000 films.
• Patrons influence what you buy, but library decides what to buy.
• No automatic purchase trigger.
• Library decides spending budget.
• Library owns perpetual rights.
• Dozens of libraries globally now completing 2014 pilot year.
13. New acquisition model:
Small, affordable topical bundles
The John Cleese Management Bundle
• Asian Theater Video Bundle
• Primary Education Video Bundle
• Social Work Video Bundle
• others
14. Scholarship trends drive our activities
