What do I want to accomplish tonight?Give you some food for thought about your career, what I see in the market, and some tips about interviewing and about what is going on in employers’ mindsGive you some tangible tools to create the brand you want to put you head and shoulders above your peers and competitors.
Who the “Bleep” am I and why should you listen?ZSA: we specialize in recruiting Professional Accountants across the country and our offices in Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and soon Vancouver.I have been in professional recruitment for over 7 years specializing in senior level accounting and finance positions including external and internal reporting, tax, internal audit and finance. You should listen to me about managing your career because I literally have dozens of conversations every day with senior level accounting and finance professionals. What I do every day is to manage what is possible and what isn’t and depending on the direction that my candidate wants to take. This direction will then determine the length of time of the search as well.MBA: I did the accelerated program at Queen’s designed for business grads while working full-time. Anyone who tells you that they don’t have enough time in the day to do small things is lying to you. We were able to find an additional 15 – 20 hours per week plus class time. Robert Herjavec has a great quote that says, “No one, when they die, says that they wished they had slept more.”CA: passed the exam in 2002.B. Comm: I completed my degree with distinction and took school far too seriously and probably could have afforded to enjoy myself a little bit more, especially in the first couple of years of my degree. An example of this, is that I missed an Our Lady Peace concert in a campus pub that held 500 people in 2000 because the next day I had an Economics mid-term exam. My two friends who went both got higher marks than I did.As so while it is important to work hard, I encourage my candidates to maintain balance and do things that they enjoy outside of work as well.
- New Reality: Dichotomy between parents telling their kids to follow their dreams and the current economy. And then these same parents who are in VP / C-level positions saying that “kids these days don’t work hard”.- Current market: especially in this market, you are competing against really good candidates. You have to be honest with yourself: does your background and experience put you in the best possible spot for the job you are applying for? If not, what sacrifices are you willing to make? (eg time, how long will your search take? Money, do you need additional classes, qualifications? Enjoyment, will you take a lesser job quicker you don’t want to unemployed?)- The intersection between what you enjoy and what makes you money: (Its fine if you only do volunteer work because you have the financial freedom to do so. It is also fine if the only reason you do your job is because of the moneyHowever, if you can find something that you truly like, that is the only way you can truly be amazing at it.
Tips for interviewing- All interview questions answer one of only three questions:Can they do the job? Do we like him? Does he want the job?Good marks and the right school opens the right doors but it is your personality, your interest and your energy that allow you to walk through them.Story: top 15% of my class at U of S, Accounting firms came to us, I only applied to 4 firms, got 4 first interviews and 4 second interviews and only got one offer. Why? Because when they asked me whether I had any questions, I said no. Because I assumed that it was a done deal because of my grades and background. Never forget you are competing, What do you ask at the end of an interview? Ask them “what can I do to earn a gold star here” What I can I do to make your job easier? Why did you decide to come and work here years ago? What keeps you here? What challenges to you anticipate in the coming months in the company and in this group? When do you talk about money? Example on a first date… do you talk about prenup? No. you talk about debt and earning potential before you get married.
- Combine personal and work: careful not to use too much politics. Example: Ladders.
- Remember: Everything you are doing now in your career and on-line either helps or hinders you.- As a young professional, I don’t see a ton of new grads with developed LinkedIn pages.- Having a professional LinkedIn page helps a lot in terms of visibility, in terms of standing out from your peers.
Absolutely! My role at ZSA Accounting Recruitment was directly related to one of my LinkedIn updates.
