It causes conductive hearing loss and is bilateral in 80% of patients. Diagnosis involves physical exams, tuning fork tests, and audiometry. Treatment options include hearing aids, surgery to restore vibration transmission, or drugs to slow bone growth.

 Otosclerosis is an autosomal dominant disorder in
which there is a fixation of the footplate of the stapes
in the oval window.
 Therefore a spongy bone develops form the bony
labyrinth, causing immobilization of the footplates
which reduces the transmission of vibration to inner
ear fluids.
 Otosclerosis is bilateral in 80 % of the patients
