Hello!
I am Bhumika Mahida
I am here because I love to give a presentation
before you …
On the topic:
“ Orwell’s 1984 and Today “
George Orwell:
Biography:Eric Arthur Blair,
known by his pen name George
Orwell, was an English
essayist, journalist and critic.
His work is characterised by
lucid prose, biting social
criticism, oppositionto
totalitarianism, and outspoken
support of democratic
socialism.
Nineteen Eighty-Four a novel by George Orwell
The book is set in 1984 in Oceania, one of three
perpetuallywarring totalitarian states the other two
are Eurasia and Eastasia. Oceania is governed by the
all-controlling Party, which has brainwashed the
population into unthinking obedience to its leader,
Big Brother.
Nineteen Eighty-Four
What are the 3 social classes in 1984?
the proles
(with their own
upper, middle
and lower
classes)
the Outer
Party (the
lowerOuter
bureaucracy)
the Inner
Party
Totalitarianism
What is the main
theme of 1984?
Totalitarianism
Totalitarianism is one of the major themes of the
novel, 1984. It presents the type of government
where even the head of the government is unknown
to the public. This theme serves as a warning to the
people because such regime unleashes propaganda
to make people believe in the lies presented by the
government.
Totalitarianism
Want big impact?
Use big image.
Objective reality
Forcing Smith to assent to the proposition that
2 + 2 = 5 indicates that the Party demands to
be in control of every aspect of his thinking
and every framework through which he
constructs reality. The Party’s will is all;
“objective reality” only exists insofar as it
conforms to the Party’s program.
The three superpowersin 1984…
Oceania Eurasia Eastasia
Big Brother is a fictional character and symbol in
George Orwell's dystopian 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-
Four. He is ostensibly the leader of Oceania, a
totalitarian state wherein the ruling party Ingsoc
wields total power "for its own sake" over the
inhabitants.
IsBig Brother the government?
Today !
Today, on the threshold of
the real year 1984, we ask
ourselves how much of
Orwell’s fictional world has
become reality and what
the prospects are for a
more sensible world.
So , Orwell's imaginary States do not
exist, but the world order of 1984
resembles in some ways the world of
''1984.'' Indeed, there are two major
world powers with a third one on the
rise. They seem to divide the world into
three zones of influence.
What is the
differences
between
both of the
Era…
In Orwell’s 1984, it was considered unacceptable to
have sex for pleasure, to eat chocolate or have an
alcoholic beverage of high quality. This was intended
to keep people from seeking out life’s pleasures and
possibly losing interest, and loyalty,in Big Brother.
While…
Look at things today… we have ‘sin taxes’. We are
forced to pay a penalty for purchasing alcohol,
tobacco and for putting gas in our vehicles because
we are made to feel guilty for the damage we’ve
apparently inflicted on the earth for trying to get
to and from work each day. Even the size of soda
drinks are regulated in some places…
In 1984, food and energy were rationed because, as in
all communist nations, there wasn’t much supply.
While the government would lie to its citizens and
attempt to make them believe the quality of their
food and drink was among the best, truth was it was
horrible, lacking the necessary nutrients. And they
frequently dealt with rolling blackouts.
While…
Look at today… we are scolded by the government for
driving big trucks and SUVs, for keeping our air
conditioning on in the summer; and the quality of
our food is worse than ever.
Winston who is main character Of the novel believed
that bombs and explosions were not actually the
result of its supposed war with territories
Eastasia/Eurasia , but came straight from Big
Brother and the Inner Party itself as a way to instill
fear and correctness in its citizens. How does this
relate to 2021?
For example, COVID-19numbers are not
consistentlybeingrecorded in the most accurate
way…
For example, in the India COVID-19 deaths are
recorded by those who die within 14 days after
testing positive — for any reason. Meaning that if a
person who tests positive for coronavirus dies a week
later in a car accident, his or her death is added to
the List of coronavirus deaths in the India. This
means we are potentially receiving inaccurate
numbers of those who have died from coronavirus.
Thus, Inwriting 1984, Orwell's main
goal was to warn of the serious
danger totalitarianism poses to
society. He goes to great lengths to
demonstrate the terrifying degree
of power and control a totalitarian
regime can acquire and maintain.
