Subject: PAPER 108: THE AMERICAN LITERATURE
Earnest Hemmingway:
Earnest Hemmingway :
Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American novelist, short-
story writer, journalist, and sportsman. His economical and
understated style which he termed the iceberg theory had a
strong influence on 20th-century fiction.
What is the theory of
modernism?
Characteristics. Arising out of the
rebellious mood at the beginning of the
twentieth century, modernism was a
radical approach that yearned to revitalize
the way modern civilization viewed life, art,
politics, and science.
The theory of Modernism :
● Like most of Hemingway’s writing, it is spare and cut down.
Unlike Victorian and Edwardian literature, it does not over-
explain.
● “In Another Country” is representative of the Modernist
perspective in that it brings focus to the aftermath of WWI
battles., “In Another Country” reflects a modernist point of
view.
How does Hemingway's writing style reflect the
modernist point of view 🤔 !
● In ErnestHemingway’s“InAnotherCountry,”theauthor
usesseveral modernisttechniquesandviewpoints.
Modernism,itself,wasan attemptbyauthorstooverturn
what wastraditional,intermsofliterature,throughnew
techniquesand ideologies.
● Commonthemesinmodernismaretechnology,thepastin
relationtothe present,and alienation.“InAnotherCountry”
happensto touchonall threeofthese themes.
9
Whatisa modernistpoint
ofview?
● Modernist fiction spoke of the inner
self and consciousness. Instead of
progress, the Modernist writer saw a
decline of civilization. …
Hemingway’s “Snows of
Kilimanjaro” serve as a
testament to the subtle craft
of the Modernist style of
writing. The symbolism and
dialogue within the “Snows of
Kilimanjaro” is superb and
helps reinforce the Modernist
themes of Hemingway’s
writing.
In Our Time, like all
of Hemingway's writing, uses
simple, declarative sentences
with little or no description of
emotion. Yet, through this
spare style, Hemingway was
able to weave powerful and
moving stories. This new use
of language counted as one
of the major developments
in modernist literature.
In The Old Man and the
Sea Hemingway
demonstrates many of
the characteristics
of Modernism…
let’s see…..
One characteristic ofModernist
literature is to go into the character's
consciousnessto find his complicated
emotions.Throughout most of this
novel the main characterSantiago is
alonein his boat with only his
thoughts…
"He is wonderful and strange and
who knows how old he is, he
thought. Never have I had such a
strong fish nor one who acted so
strangely" .
A second characteristic of
Modernist literature is the use
of third person omniscient
point of view. The reader joins
the story after eighty-four
days of not catching a fish and
the narrator fills in the details.
The narrator knows all about
the old man and the boy.
"The old man had
taught the boy to fish
and the boy loved
him".
The third characteristic is a
simple direct style with a basic
vocabulary. The choice of words
creates basic concrete pictures
with no flowery language. For
example,
"He knelt down and found the
tuna under the stern with the gaff
and drew it toward him keeping it
clear of the coiled lines".
What is
Hemingway's
writing style?
From almost the beginning of his
writingcareer …
Basically, his styleis simple,
direct, and unadorned,probably
as a resultof his early newspaper
training.
⚪ The writing style of
Hemmingway :
Concluding point…
Hemingway matured as an artist in the
city of lights, the city considered by
modernist writers as a wellspring of
inspiration…
but…
In France, Hemingway is considered
a modernist because of his style
alone. Some American scholars,
however, argue that Hemingway is
not a modernist but rather a
Realist…
Thus,
Modernist literature is a break
with the old ways of writing
from the 19th Century…
Modernist wrote in new forms
and stylesstyles... Ernest
Hemingway was one of the
modernist writers.
