 •   Ed.S.: 30 hours min. (for certification | already

 • For Year 1, most people will take all courses
   alike regardless of degree
Our Program

Cohort based
• 25-30 people
• Students tend to graduate together: for you, Spring
  or Summer of 2011
• Faster and slower rates are possible
• Social bond forms
• Basis of future professional network
Accredited by AASL and based on their standards
Team Work
Few, if any, tests!
Group projects,for the most part
• Ability to teamwork is an essential competency
• Professional life is now heavily team-oriented
• Collaboration is essential between school
  librarians and teachers
• We understand that working in teams may not be a
  preference for all learnersad of time
• You can begin forming teams now
• Size: two or three
• Teams can be permanent or fluid
Delivery
Flexible - doesn't quite fit what we've evolved into
Online - well-known problems with 100% online
Hybrid - more accurate descriptor for us
 • Optimal mix of f2f, online, summer study, and
   independent work - between and within courses
 • Professor adjusts to suit
 • Conscious of your time, schedule, responsibilities, and
   commuting challenges (including weather and price of
   gas)
 • Online provides relief from commuting
 • F2f provides social cohesion and opportunity to discuss
   with peers
 • Online professor visits f2f class occasionally
Courses
Paired: One f2f, one online
Saturdays
 • 9a-3p (= double session)
 • Here at Gwinnett
 • Seven to eight dates
 • Brown bag lunch; we can talk about more elaborate
   plans later
Pattern for first year as above
Second year: < f2f time, > online time and independent
projects
Course Rotations
Internship

100 hours on site (nothing like student teaching)

Can stretch out over the year
Contract-based
Hours need not be contiguous
Lots of red tape
Lots of flexibility
Criminal Background Check required thru UGA
Liability insurance required (GAE or PAGE)

Orientation: UGA's SLM Program

  • 1. Orientation to UGA's SLM Program Welcome, Cohort 9! June 27, 2009
  • 2. Preview Introductions UGA Bookstore at Gwinnett Michael Law, Librarian, coming at 4pm Program Basics Your first semester Things to do Your questions
  • 3. Introductions Faculty Staff And you!
  • 4. Degrees • Degree and non-degree • Diploma will say "Instructional Technology" • SLM is your Emphasis Area • M.Ed: 36 hours min. • Ed.S.: 30 hours min. (for certification | already certified) • All must complete degree checklist AND Certification Checklist • For Year 1, most people will take all courses alike regardless of degree
  • 5. Our Program Cohort based • 25-30 people • Students tend to graduate together: for you, Spring or Summer of 2011 • Faster and slower rates are possible • Social bond forms • Basis of future professional network Accredited by AASL and based on their standards
  • 6. Team Work Few, if any, tests! Group projects,for the most part • Ability to teamwork is an essential competency • Professional life is now heavily team-oriented • Collaboration is essential between school librarians and teachers • We understand that working in teams may not be a preference for all learnersad of time • You can begin forming teams now • Size: two or three • Teams can be permanent or fluid
  • 7. Delivery Flexible - doesn't quite fit what we've evolved into Online - well-known problems with 100% online Hybrid - more accurate descriptor for us • Optimal mix of f2f, online, summer study, and independent work - between and within courses • Professor adjusts to suit • Conscious of your time, schedule, responsibilities, and commuting challenges (including weather and price of gas) • Online provides relief from commuting • F2f provides social cohesion and opportunity to discuss with peers • Online professor visits f2f class occasionally
  • 8. Courses Paired: One f2f, one online Saturdays • 9a-3p (= double session) • Here at Gwinnett • Seven to eight dates • Brown bag lunch; we can talk about more elaborate plans later Pattern for first year as above Second year: < f2f time, > online time and independent projects
  • 10. Internship 100 hours on site (nothing like student teaching) Second year Can stretch out over the year Contract-based Hours need not be contiguous Lots of red tape Lots of flexibility Criminal Background Check required thru UGA Liability insurance required (GAE or PAGE) Don't worry about now; discuss Spring '10
  • 11. Portfolio or Applied Project M.Ed.: Portfolio Ed.S.: Portfolio and Applied Project Non-degree: Portfolio Examples Be sure to archive all of your work. All students keep online Assignment Pages.
  • 12. Communication Too many channels! Add a few more: SLM-L Cohort 9 Blog email UGAMail GoogleDocs Google Calendar Little or no paper; most materials are online Skype: voice and chat
  • 13. WebCT and eLC • Course Management system • WebCT morphing into eLC - so you may experience a mix • A communication challenge all of its own • Each course will centralize itself here (usually) • Has voice tools as well: team meetings, VOIP, chat • Course will appear on your eLC homepage just before semester begins - not after registration
  • 14. Your ToDo List for Now Immunization Get your UGA MyID Contact your advisor - again Register Pay Order texts Watch for communications - "quiet" for long periods during summer
  • 15. Advisement Stadium Advisement Advising Notes Will repeat just before Registration each time Your advisor must "clear" you to register each time Registration Calendar In Spring, you may register for Summer and Fall Drop/Add Payment of fees Online tracking between advisors and advisees Individual consultation available as necessary Cross-advising happens informally often

Registration my.uga.edu • Check for "flags" • Explore OASIS • Communicate with advisor first • Most Cohort 9 students should take EDIT 6300 and EDIT 6320 • Note the payment deadline carefully • Your mentor can help you with OASIS puzzles • For a technical problem in registering, contact Cathy Dickson and copy your advisor. • Not exactly sure when new students can register
