Editor's Notes

  1. In today’s classrooms, the teaching and learning process is becoming more streamlined and fluid from students to teachers. The emergence of technological resources – the internet, Twitter , Facebook, YouTube and other media tools has contributed to making communication amongst educators, students, and parents easier. The three trends I have identified within the teaching and training field are: Collaborative, Tech-Powered, and Blended Learning.
  2. Collaborative is the process of sharing information and connecting with others utilizing social network sites, and social media. Across the country, students and teachers are learning from each other in various ways. Sharing information and connecting with others on a personal and impersonal level has now become one of the most powerful tools in the world of education. Students are collaborating with each other through social media to learn more about new subjects, test ideas and theories, learn facts, and gauge each others’ opinions.
  3. The benefits of the collaborative process is: boosting congruity amongst students and teachers, enabling the capacity for teachers to learn from each other, and provides a learning environment filled with freedom and less rigid teaching restrictions for both the student and teacher. The idea is simple: by working together, students figure out how to find common ground, balance each others’ skills, communicate clearly, and be accountable to the team for their part of the project; these are skills that will transfer over in the work place.
  4. Tech-powered is the the process of utilizing interactive tools (i.e. Skype, and Google Maps) to communicate with peers, and teach the curriculum. Technology has transformed the education realm into a forward thinking process. Educators are finding innovative ways and interactive tools to grab their students’ attention. Schools, Universities and employers are building curriculum , and training sessions by using: Google maps for teaching literature, pod casts and voice threads to communicate, ePals and LiveMocha to learn global languages with native speakers, and Skype to communicate with peers from all over the world.
  5. Technology and social media tools are permeating our lives, and the better able students are, the better connected they’ll be with global events and a success within the working world. The benefits of the tech-powered has empowered teachers and students in cohesively learning how to effectively find content and to discern reliable sources. It has increased the joy of learning and changed the educational experience for everyone.
  6. Blended learning is the process of combining computers with the traditional teaching, also known as “ hybrid learning”. The blended learning movement is rapidly growing— today’s learners are wired at all times, teachers are directing students’ natural online tendency towards schoolwork. Through the blending learning process students are taking the initiative to conduct research, watch videos, and participate in collaborative online discussions from home and at school. A great example of this involves teachers who use home-time online discussions and collaborative projects as fuel for content and discussion in the classroom.
  7. Blended Learning gives the student the ability to learn beyond the confines of the classroom wall. This increases global awareness, critical thinking, problem solving and constructing a collaborative learning process in and out of the classroom. Universities and schools have shifted from the traditional teacher-centric approach to a student-centric approach. The student-centric approach entails the use of mobile technologies, increased use of students collaborating in groups, are changing not only the teaching environment but also the aesthetics of the classroom.
  8. The three trends I have identified are valuable and vital to the world of teaching and training. Teaching is no longer an independent process amongst educators, but is now a collaborative process between technology, educators and students. The benefits of blended learning , tech-powered and collaborative is proven to heighten students’ ability to assist the teacher with new technology and encourages both the teacher and student to take control and advantage of new learning methods. These trends are altering the traditional classroom setting, increasing the student- to- teacher engagement, fostering independent learning and self-directed learning skills in students. Mobile/E-learning is the new trendsetter in teaching; rapidly thriving —matriculating revenue and leveraging social platforms.
  9. In conclusion teachers’ and students’ relationships are changing, as they learn from each other. Teachers roles are shifting from owners of information to facilitators and guides to learning. Educators are finding different ways of using class time. Introverted students are finding ways to participate in class discussions online. Different approaches to teaching are being used in the same class. Students are getting a global perspective and curriculum is incorporating skill-building — preparing students for the workforce and success in life.
