You are now a part of People to People Ambassador Programs’ history… The People to People movement dates back more than half a century to its founding by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. Eisenhower was acting on his firm belief that direct interaction between ordinary citizens around the world can promote cultural understanding and world peace. That proud legacy of hope lives on in People to People Ambassador Programs on seven continents.
- 4. People to People represents the culmination of President Eisenhower’s lifelong crusade for world peace. Eisenhower felt very strongly that everyday citizens of the world wanted peace and could attain it much more effectively without government interference. Eisenhower felt that face-to-face contact through various cultural activities, sports, and the arts would form enduring friendships among people of all cultures. As citizens interact with their peers from other nations by coming into each other’s homes, attending each others’ schools, and competing against one another in friendly contests of athletic skill, they will learn to appreciate each other and eradicate many misconceptions. The memories of warfare would haunt Eisenhower for the rest of his life. - The largest Baroque fountain in the city. The fountain was commissioned by form of a competition originally won by the artist Alessandro Galilei ... but due to the outcry in Rome over the fact that a Florentine (rather than a Roman) won, artist Nicola Salvi was awarded the commission instead. Nicola Salvi began work on the beautiful fountain in 1732.
- Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower) is the cathedral church of Florence, Italy. The Duomo, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.
- The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower) is often referred to as T"he Duomo", and is the cathedral church of Florence, Italy. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris. To the right is The Baptistery of St. John in the Piazza del Duomo
- The south doors were originally installed on the east side, facing the Duomo, and were transferred to their present location in 1452. This took six years, the doors being completed in 1336. These proto-Renaissance doors consist of 28 quatrefoil panels, with the twenty top panels depicting scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist . The eight lower panels depict the eight virtues of hope, faith, charity, humility, fortitude, temperance, justice and prudence. In 1401 a competition to design the north and east doors was announced. The 21-year old Lorenzo Ghiberti won the commission and It took Ghiberti 21 years to complete the north doors. Like the South doors, these gilded bronze doors consist of twenty-eight panels. The east doors took Ghilberti another 27 years to complete, these consisted of ten panels depicting scenes of the old testament. The doors by Ghiberti were the beginning of the Renaissance. Michelangelo referred to the East doors as fit to be the "Gates of Paradise”, and they are still referred to by this name. Ghiberti himself said they were "the most singular work that I have ever made".

To the left is actually a copy of Michelangelo's David, the original was moved indoors to protect it from erosion due to weather. This is the location is where Michelangelo intended his sculpture to be viewed.

- Venus de Milo is an ancient Greek statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Created at some time between 130 and 100 BC, it is believed to depict Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) the Greek goddess of love and beauty. The marble sculpture is thought to be the work of Alexandros of Antioch, an artist of the Hellenistic age. The Mona Lisa depicts a seated woman, Lisa del Giocondo, whose facial expression has been frequently described as enigmatic. da Vinci completed began the painting in 1503 and completed shortly before his death in 1519. The Mona Lisa is small in size, but is still considered the most famous painting in the world. The sitter was a member of the prominent Gherardini family in Florence, her expression has puzzled people from Sigmund Freud and Harvard professors to countless observers. Speculation by scholars and hobbyists made the work of art a globally recognized icon and an object of commercialization.
