o Promotion and development of agriculture and horticulture.
o Development and maintenance of grazing lands and preventing
their unauthorized use.
o Destruction of weeds and pests.
o Training and carrying out schemes for the improved methods of
cultivation and management of lands to increase production.
o Organise young farmers clubs and Mahila Mandals.
o Promotion of agricultural credit.
o Prevention and control of environmental pollution.
o Promotion of dairy farming, poultry, piggery and rabbitary etc.
o Grass land development, procurement and distribution of seeds of
improved varieties of fodder and grass.
o Ensuring establishment and proper functioning of first aid centres,
dispensaries and hospitals for animals including their healthcare.
o Fuel plantation and fodder development.
o Promotion of farm forestry and development of social forestry.
o Promotion of agro based rural and cottage industries.
o Organization of awareness camps, seminars, training
programmes, agricultural and industrial exhibitions for the
benefit of rural people.
o Propagation of improved chullahs and other efficient energy
devices.
o Promotion, development and maintenance of community non-
conventional energy devices including biogas.
o Organize, regulate and control local market for sale and purchase
of any product.
o Construction, repair and maintenance of community assets.
o Help in arranging financial assistance to the needy farmers and
other people from banks and other sources.

Role in Rural Development
 Promotion of public awareness and participation in
poverty alleviation programmes.
 Help in the identification and selection of potential and
eligible beneficiaries of various programmes through
household survey and getting services of public
institutions.
 Securing peoples participation for the success of rural
development programmes.
 Participation in effective implementation and
monitoring.
 Help in annual physical verification of the assets
purchased under different schemes.
 Acting as a link Ensuring that benefits of different rural development
programmes reach the rural poor.
 Between the administration and the people to bring about changes in their
altitude through education, persuasion, motivation and building up of
awareness.
 Organizing awareness camps, seminars and training programmes to impart
knowledge and training to beneficiaries as per their need and scheme.
 Disseminating new improved technology related to rural development by
arranging exhibitions, film shows, campaigns, field days and demonstrations
etc.
 Help in the organization of credit camps at block level in which officials of
different departments can participate to facilitate completion of all formalities
required for sanction of loan for rural development schemes.
