A leader is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goa
Dr. Shetty has repeatedly shown the following skills in his work.
SKILL 1 : SENSING NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES
 While growing up, he witnessed many poor people dying at a young age
because they could not afford medicines and medical treatment. To prevent
such calamities, Dr Devi Prasad Shetty wanted to make healthcare
affordable for the people in India.
 Dr Devi Prasad Shetty started the Manipal Heart Foundation at Manipal
Hospital in Bangalore.
 In 2001, he founded Narayana Hrudayalaya, which is a multi-speciality
hospital in Bommasandra, Bangalore.
 “It was no rocket science. I would see 100 patients a day but nobody would
come back for the surgery because they couldn’t afford to pay for it.”
 According to him, “If a solution is not affordable, it is no solution at all.”
SKILL 2 : KALEIDOSCOPE THINKING
Reduced operating
costs by using cross
ventilation instead of
air conditioning
Centralise purchase
of drugs and
consumables
Switched over to
digital x-rays to save
on the cost of film

and second-year
students join an art
class before they
start to operate
Heart surgeries at
1/10 of the cost as
compared to the
hospitals in the
United States.
SKILL 3: SETTING THE THEME
A raw idea that should Shape into theme that makes the idea come alive
and this skill measurers the compelling case for the value and direction of
change.
“ A vision remains just a dream unless it can inspire others to
follow”
Dr Devi Shetty is Pioneer in low-cost cardiac care, is building a chain of hospitals
that will carry out heart surgeries at the cheapest rates in the world, buttressing
India's reputation as the Mecca for frugal innovation.
The 200-bed, 1.5-lakh-square-foot Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital, set up with
an investment of about Rs 45 crore - 80% cheaper than similar multi-specialty
facilities.
There has to be a business model," said Devi Prasad Shetty. "Innovations have
to be affordable; a magic pill will not do.
Right from design and construction, Narayana Hrudayalaya has sought new ways
to cut costs, instead of marbles and expensive furniture, the hospital has used
simple tiles and low-cost seating, reducing the cost per bed to Rs 12-18 lakh,
compared with Rs 60-80 lakh at other corporate hospitals.
 A series of design and operational advancements, ranging from construction
techniques to post-operative care, will mean that an open heart surgery can
be performed for about one-fourth the cost in a corporate hospital.

Wall street journal newspaper described him as "the Henry Ford of heart
surgery”
 Today, a simple heart operation at Narayana Hrudayalaya costs about Rs
53000 making it more affordable to many in India.
SKILL 4: ENLISTING BACKERS AND
SUPPORTERS
Dr. Devi Shetty wanted to make health care services
affordable for the people. He met resistance but stood by
his vision. He convinced other top-quality cardiac
surgeon to join.
“To make anything succeed, you must make a
personal network.”
He was successful doing that and found people that are
working hard to see that Dr. Shetty never has to forgo his
vision -

A Close Assosiate VP – Viren Prasad Shetty, Eldest Son.

up.” said Dr. Shetty in an interview.

Got inspired by how Dr. Christian Bernard did the first heart transplant in Cape Town.
Narayana Hrudayalaya – Affordable healthcare.
A vision to expand it as a 30000-bed hospital in 2013, not only in metros but also in
tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

a new position — I can bet that I will never be able to create what I have done.”
-- Dr. Shetty’s word, in an interview with Forbes India
