ORGAN DONATION
page 2
Organ Donation is the gift of an organ to a
person who needs a transplant to improve
his condition and health status. It is a
procedure in which a healthy organ
(donor) is taken from an individual who is
either living or deceased and is
transplanted into a person whose
respective orphan (recipient) is
malfunctioning.
Organ donation is a surgical process.
Transplantation is necessary because the
recipient’s organ has failed or has been
damaged by disease or injury.

TWO SITUATION UNDER WHICHORGANDONATION
OCCURS
page 5
1. LIVE DONATION
• This type of donation which occurs
when the person is alive.
• It is done mostly when an
immediate family member is in
need of an organ.
• Only first degree donors (parents ,
sibling and children are allowed to
donate) are allowed to be live
donors.
• They can donate one kidney(as one
kidney is capable of maintaining the
body function), a portion of
pancreas and a part of liver.
2. Deceased Cadaver Donation
• This type of donation involves taking organs
from the person who has just died.
• The patient has to register in a hospital that
does transplants stating his/her wish for the
donation or their first degree relatives can give
their consent.
• Death is of two main types
1. Brain Death
2. Cardiac or Natural Death.

page 6
BRAIN DEATH
• This is where a person no longer has blood
going to or activity in their brain due to a
severe brain injury.
• They have permanently lost the potential
for consciousness and the capacity to
breathe.
• This may happen even when a ventilator is
keeping the person's heart beating and
oxygen is circulated through their blood.
• It is possible to donate all organs in case
of brain death.
Cardiac DEATH
• In this case the hearth stops beating.
• Due to lack of circulation of blood the vital
organs become unstable for
transplantation.
• Timeframes are very short for this pathway
of organ donation because organs cannot be
without oxygenated blood and outside the
body for a long period of time.
• In this case family members can decide
organ donation for certain viable organs.

Organ donation in India
500,000 people die because of non-
availability of organs.
• 200,000 people die of liver disease
50,000 people die from heart disease
• 150,000 people await a kidney
transplant but only 5,000 get one
• 1,000,000 lakh people suffer from
corneal blindness and await
transplant

What makes organ donation
difficult in India?
• Finding a donor match is difficult to begin with.
• In India, this challenge is compounded by
bureaucratic hurdles and lack of awareness.
• The first challenge is red-tapism and lengthy
paperwork.
• According to existing rules, if the potential
donor is not related to the person who needs
the organ, the transplant needs to be approved
by a state-level committee or by a hospital
committee that includes government officials.
• The next challenge is that it is often difficult for
family members to accept their loved one is
brain dead.
• Another problem is that there are too few
surgeons and hospitals equipped for
transplants.

Myths Facts
I have a medical condition, so I can't be a
donor.
Anyone, regardless of age or medical history, can sign
up to be a donor.
If they see I'm a donor at the hospital,
they won't try to save my life.
When you are sick or injured and admitted to a
hospital, the one and only priority is to save your life.
My family won't be able to have an open
casket funeral if I'm a donor.
An open casket funeral is usually possible for organ,
eye, and tissue donors.
Somebody could take my organs and
sell them.
Federal law prohibits buying and selling organs.
My family will have to pay for the donation. There is no cost to donors or their families for
organ or tissue donation.

How can I donate?
To be an organ donor, it is important to register
by signing up for Organ Donation. One needs
to fill a prescribed consent form, which can
either be downloaded from National Organ and
Tissue Transplant Organization
(NOTTO) website or accessed from the
medical facility that is approached for organ
removal. In case of deceased donation, a
written consent form from the lawful custodian
of the body after the death of the patient is
required in a prescribed application form.
To pledge your organ, you can register at the
NGOs mentioned below.
