ORCID: Connecting Research & Researchers
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is an identifier system designed to distinguish researchers and their works, enabling better management of their academic records amidst common name variations. Since its launch in 2012, ORCID has registered over 750,000 IDs and is utilized by universities, research organizations, and funding bodies for linking research outputs to the researchers. The integration of ORCID IDs in manuscript submissions and grant applications enhances discoverability and improves the exchange of information across various research-related platforms.

Here are some examples of how you can use your iD: Use your iD in grant applications Here’s an example to demonstrate this step: in Summer 2013, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) is creating an application to facilitate grant/fellowship applications and the sharing of biosketch information between multiple U.S. federal funding agencies. This application is called ScienCV and a beta version will be available for NIH pilot in late summer/early fall 21013. Implementation by other U.S. funding agencies is expected to follow. Other international funders are also beginning integrations. Design note: We have provided several examples. All may not be relevant for each audience. Feel free to delete the examples that do not apply to your audience.

For example, Figshare now allows users to exchange dataset metadata between Figshare and ORCID. Other organizations like Dryad are also planning to implement ORCID registration/authenticated identifier exchange at the time of dataset deposition. ODIN, the ORCID and DataCite Interoperability Network, released a beta version of the DataCite / ORCID Integration tool, enabling researchers to search DataCite and import metadata from objects with DataCite DOIs to their ORCID record.
