3. DEFINITION
• Assisting the weak or debilitated patient for cleaning mouth by
mechnical brushing of the teeth and rinsing of the mouth
4. INDICATIONS
1. Mouth breaths .
2. Patient on NPO.
3. Oral surgery patients special mouth care.
4. Patient on oxygen inhalation.
5. Child under three year.
6. Patient who are unable to maintain adequate oral hygiene
5. PURPOSES
• To maintain the healthy state of mouth ,teeth ,gums,and lips .
• To clean the off food particles plaque and bacteria
• T relive discomfort resulting from un pleasant odors and tastes
.
• To enhance the well –being and comfort and to stimulate
appetite
• To prevent sordes caries and infection to oral tissue

4. Tooth paste /power /available dentrifice
5. Mouth wash solution of potassium permanent 1:1000

8. PROCEDURE
1. Assess the condition of the patient his mouth, and level of
consciousness
2. Inspect the integrity of lips ,teeth, buccal mucosa ,gums,palate and
tongue
3. Assess the patient ability to grasp and manipulate toothbrush
4. Explain procedure to patients and encourage him to participate
5. Pull the screen
6. Wash hand and Don gloves
7. Bring to patients edge of the bed nearest to the nurse
8. Position patient in high fowlers /semifowlers position as tolerate
9. Place the small Mackintosh with the face towel on the chest
9. PROCEDURE
• Apply toothpaste to brush holding brush over k-basin ,pour
small amount of water over toothpaste.
• Instruct patient to hold toothbrush bristles at 45degree angle
to gum line .brush inner and outer surface of uppar and lower
teeth by brushing from gum to crown of each tooth
• Clean the biting surface back and forth .farther side frist and
then nearer side and upper jaw frist and then lower jaw
• Have the patient hold the brush at the some angle (45degree
)over tounge and brush lightly over surface horizontally taking
care not to initiate gag reflex
• Allow patient to rines mouth thoroughly bu talking mouthful of

• Allow patient to rinse mouth with mouthwash as desired
• Assist wiping mouth with face towel
• Apply emolient to lips
• Assist patient to comfortable position
• Discarded the waste ,clean the used articles and replace
epuipment as appropriate
• Wash hand
