Oral biopsy is a procedure used to define lesions, facilitate treatment selection, confirm diagnoses, and provide medico-legal documentation. Indications for biopsy include inflammatory lesions unresponsive to local treatment for 10-14 days, lesions interfering with function, red/white lesions, and characteristics of malignancy. Biopsies are classified as surgical (incisional or excisional), fine needle aspiration biopsy, or thick needle/core biopsy. Material can be obtained through surgical excision, cautery, laser, biopsy punch, or exfoliative cytology.
