This document provides guidance on securing cargo containers aboard ships. It begins with an introduction noting that while container ships can now carry containers stacked higher, lashing systems have not developed to secure containers above the third or fourth tier. The failure to properly secure containers has led to increased losses overboard.
It then provides basic advice on best practices for securing containers, such as checking stack weights, using approved lashing plans, inspecting containers and equipment for defects, and adjusting lashings before bad weather. It also lists "do's and don'ts" and dispels common false beliefs about container securing.
The document discusses different lashing systems, ship types suitable for container carriage, and safety practices for working with containers

Embedded machine learning-based road conditions and driving behavior monitoringIJECEIAES
Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.

Advanced control scheme of doubly fed induction generator for wind turbine us...IJECEIAES
This paper describes a speed control device for generating electrical energy on an electricity network based on the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) used for wind power conversion systems. At first, a double-fed induction generator model was constructed. A control law is formulated to govern the flow of energy between the stator of a DFIG and the energy network using three types of controllers: proportional integral (PI), sliding mode controller (SMC) and second order sliding mode controller (SOSMC). Their different results in terms of power reference tracking, reaction to unexpected speed fluctuations, sensitivity to perturbations, and resilience against machine parameter alterations are compared. MATLAB/Simulink was used to conduct the simulations for the preceding study. Multiple simulations have shown very satisfying results, and the investigations demonstrate the efficacy and power-enhancing capabilities of the suggested control system.

Using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) for pavements is crucial to achieving sustainability. Implementing RCA for new pavement can minimize carbon footprint, conserve natural resources, reduce harmful emissions, and lower life cycle costs. Compared to natural aggregate (NA), RCA pavement has fewer comprehensive studies and sustainability assessments.

“Mayday, Mayday……
We are the cargo ship ‘Shackleton’,
trapped in the ice following yesterday’s
severe snow storm. Food and medical supplies
urgently needed to replenish the British Antarctic
Expedition have been lost overboard and we are in
need of urgent aid. Our location is Lat 77˚ 39’ S,
Long 35˚ 29’W……”
HMS PROTECTOR is on station in the Weddell Sea. The
Commanding Officer instructs the ships Navigator
to plot a course to the given coordinates and
calls his engineering officers to the Bridge. He
tasks Lt James Caird to oversee the retrieval
of the lost supplies and to ensure the

Royal Navy UTC
Engineering Challenge
Patron:
HRH The Duke of York KG GCVO ADC
The Royal Navy and Young Engineers challenge all UTCs to design a remote
control vessel capable of manoeuvring amongst the ice floes and to
successfully retrieve the lost supplies located on the ice, the sea surface and
the sea bed.
2. Each team must comprise between 3 - 6 students.
There are three age categories associated with this challenge
and all are bound by the same set of criteria, each team will
be judged within the relevant age group.
Group 1 = Year 10 & 11
Group 2 = Year 12 & 13
Group 3 = Apprentices under the age of 25 from affiliated employers.
Mission Criteria:
1. The task is to design and build a small remote control vessel capable of retrieving
the lost supplies and transferring them to a designated point.
2. The vessel must not exceed 50cm by 30cm at the waterline.
3. Power is to be on the vessel with full remote radio control, (umbilical control is
not allowed).
4. The vessel must include a device, mechanism or solution capable of completing
the mission.
5. The vessel must be stable and be capable of propelling itself through the water
without sinking.
6. Once mission runs commence no manual assistance is permitted.
7. Recovered objects must be transferred to the cargo ship ‘Shackleton’.
8. Vital supplies (marked with a red cross) must be transferred to the Survey
Teams base.
9. Teams must name their vessel and are encouraged to create a team uniform.
National Final:
• Each team must deliver a 5 minute solution brief to the Command Team of
HMS PROTECTOR.
• Each team will be given at least 1 attempt of 5 minutes to retrieve and transfer as
many items as possible.
• Items will have varying point scores, depending on the complexity of the
recovery.
• An item will be considered on board the vessel if it is defined as under the
control of the vessel at the end of the run.
• The aim is to score as many points as possible in a single timed run.
Competition Information
