Personal Statement
For the past five years I have been working as a 2nd
Officer/Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO)/
Safety Officer on board Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) and Regional Support Vessels (RSVs),
in the North Sea. This has given me a lot of experience in the array of support, which is required
by the offshore industry. During my eight years at sea, three of which were on Container Vessels,
I have demonstrated that I am able to work successfully with others and have experience of
working with crews of mixed nationalities. Equally I am able to work independently and take the
lead when required. I have gained over 1500hrs of DP2 time on Converteam C Series and
Kongsberg SDP21 DP equipment, manoeuvring alongside fixed installations, semi subs and
FPSOs. As well as DP operations I have also built up significant manual and joystick ship
handling experience both alongside installations and driving in harbour with Azipod propulsion
systems. Whilst working on RSVs I was involved in a diverse range of operations such as;
conducting emergency tanker towing exercises at STL buoys, search and rescue exercises in
conjunction with SAR helicopters and other assets, launching and recovery of rescue boats and
many other tasks in support of the oil and gas sector. I am now at the stage in my career where I
feel that I would benefit from gaining experience in other areas of the maritime sector, which
would allow me to utilise and build on the skills and knowledge I have accumulated over the last
eight years.

In my role as a Second Officer with Sealion Shipping and Bibby Ship Management I was required
to act as an Officer of the Watch, DPO and Ship’s Safety Officer. My primary responsibility was to
carry out the duties of an Officer of the Watch as per the Masters orders. This involved
conducting a safe navigational watch and the upkeep of navigational equipment and charts. I also
assisted the Chief Officer with maintenance of Lifesaving/Fire fighting Appliances and with the
planning of cargo operations, supervising the execution of that plan whilst in port and alongside
installations. This includes the planning of deck cargo stowage, dry bulks/ wet bulks
loading/unloading and the effects on vessel stability.
Whilst working out in the field I have developed a thorough knowledge of the logistics operations
within the offshore industry by regularly liaising with shore side logistics personnel.
As the ship’s Safety Officer I enthusiastically promoted a strong safety culture and implemented
company and client safety systems and procedures. This role has developed my understanding
of the risk assessment process with which I was heavily involved with on board. I am able to
undertake accident and incident investigations and report them in a comprehensive manner. I
was also involved in the dry-docking of two vessels, the Caledonian Vanguard and Caledonian
Vision in Frederikshavn, Denmark, as Safety Officer. This gave me a great insight into the
operations of a dry dock and the challenges faced when co-coordinating countless tasks to a tight
deadline while maintaining high standards of safety. During this time I was involved in the daily
morning meetings where I confidently presented any safety issues to dry dock personnel and
heads of department.
