2. Personal History Profile & Current Summary
Qualified as a UK MCA Chief Engineer Limited & Class 2 Unlimited Marine Engineering Officer. I
completed a Marine Engineering cadetship at the Cardiff Reardon Smith Nautical College in Wales
and then the Warsash Maritime Academy in Southampton UK. I have had two periods at sea from 1987
to 1999 and then 2008 to present day.
Since 2008 I have currently worked in the offshore industry as a 1st & 2nd Engineer for companies such
as AOS New Zealand, Australian Offshore Solutions, Tidewater Marine Australia, Offshore Marine
Services and Admiralty Marine Western Australia. Before going offshore in 2008, I have worked for
companies such as P&O Cruises where I was the 2nd Engineer Senior Watch-keeper, Blue Star Line,
P&O Ferries UK, Esso Petroleum Tankers.
Presently working in the diverse offshore oil and gas industry I have honed my skills and experience
on different types of vessels such as Sub-Sea Construction Dive and Support with ROV (Sat & Dive),
DP Anchor handling, DP PSV’s, DP Heavy Lift, DP Large Rock Bed Layer, Dredging and Drill ship
vessels. Being able to change from vessel to vessel as requested by my company and able to pick up
ship systems very quickly has become a major part of my strengths. My responsibilities on board
regardless what rank I sail is the safe operational running of the ship’s main propulsion systems,
auxiliary systems, ship board boilers, economisers and showing leadership in safety, permit to work
systems and the training of junior engineers.
I have worked on a few major projects recently in Australia such as the 64-billion-dollar gas plant at
Barrow Island in Western Australia, Shell Prelude Sub Sea construction and two major new gas pipe
lines. Whilst working on these projects I have been involved in deep sub sea bed diving installations
combined with ROV’s (Sat & Dive). I have also got experience on Anchor handling vessels with hands
on driving of winches and the moving an anchor spread of 14 anchors for two large pipe layers. I have
also worked on PSV’s supporting FPSO and Oil Rigs around the coast.
Working on majority of DP2 vessels I have gained knowledge of complex computerised control rooms,
distribution boards such as Siemens and Kornberg which utilise using the open tie breaker, conforming
to FMEA so allowing segregation of the engine room systems. I have worked with 690, 440 and 230
volt systems and whilst working for P&O Cruises high voltage systems. Working on DSV and cruise
liners exposed me to the daily problems of accommodation services such as galley, air conditioning
and sewage systems which do come under extreme pressure with a large full complement of crew,
contractors and passengers especially with toilet vacuum systems. Working on some oil tankers, anchor
handlers and PSV’s due to the reduction in employees on the vessels I have had to sail as the ships
electrician and become experienced in electrical work, drawings and systems. This experience has been
self-taught and this has helped me sort out problematic issues on the run.
The type of engines I have worked on have been Wartsila 7L32 modern offshore marine engines (type
32, 7 cylinder) and other types of engines such as MaK 8 cylinder 8m43, Caterpillar 3516, EMD 20-
710-G7B, EMD’s and even a Hybrid propulsion. Other types of engines have been direct drive PSVs,
diesel electric PSVs, Z drive azimuth-PSVs and the large slow speed engines.
Whilst working deep sea I have had experience on the following vessels, cruise liners, refrigerated
container ships, refrigerated reefer cargo, oil tankers, iron ore bulk carriers and ferries.
3. Moving back to Christchurch in 2003 with my New Zealand family, I joined the international testing
and verification company SGS in the Port of Lyttelton in July 2005 as a maintenance engineer. It was
soon apparent to my employers that I had ability to learn new concepts very quickly and was promoted
in April 2006 to the position of Operations Manager at the ExxonMobil fuel distribution centre in
Christchurch. My responsibilities were to write permits, develop safe operating procedures, JSA’s, loss
prevention observations and create a good safety culture. Promotion gained in February 2007 and
promoted to the role of Projects Co-ordinator for the plant. In 2007 I decided to investigate working
back at sea and I returned to sea in the offshore industry in 2008.
Career Objectives
I am now looking for a marine company that has the same safety culture that I adhere to. I am looking
for a company that will allow me to utilise my management skills, leadership qualities that I have
developed and give me the responsibility and trust to hold a senior position in that company. The
company that I seek puts safety as their number one priority, is forward thinking and will provide
ongoing quality training so that employees are always at the pinnacle of excellence. I am a marine
engineering officer, team player, a leader, a crew member who passengers like, can think outside the
box and can achieve solutions to problematic situations whilst under extreme pressure when critical
situations arise.
