An operating system is used to control programs, schedule tasks, allocate storage, and present a default interface between applications and the user. It fixes amounts of CPU time and memory for programs or allows jobs to read data while other programs run. Without an operating system, a PC or laptop would be useless. Famous operating systems include UNIX, MS-DOS, and Macintosh (Apple).
